Magic: The Gathering’s take on Diablo will be playable in March

Magic: Legends is an upcoming free-to-play action RPG, and the game’s PC open beta begins on March 23. Developer Cryptic Studios shared a new video that shows off the game’s deckbuilding element, which is inspired by the source material of Magic: The Gathering.

While Magic: Legends is in the same genre as the Diablo titles, Magic: The Gathering is best known as a competitive card game where players build decks and battle opponents. That element is carrying forward into Legends, and the game draws on the lore of the card game.

Rocket League’s new game mode rolls out for the Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is approaching, and Rocket League developer Psyonix has decided to bring its own version of the big game to the competitive car soccer game. On Feb. 2, Rocket League players can try out a brand new game mode called Gridiron. The event will run until Feb. 8, and includes event challenges and a NFL Fan Pack in the store.

Gridiron turns the soccer field into a football field. It’s a four-on-four match with an actual American football on the field instead of a boring ol’ soccer ball. Touching the football attaches it to the roof of your car, making that car the ball carrier. Anyone who touches the ball becomes the ball carrier, which means players can set up a cool pass to a team, or a bad boy can steal the football away from your car.

Sea of Thieves players won’t get bigger crew sizes any time soon

Sea of Thieves players won’t get bigger crew sizes any time soon

Sea of Thieves is a highly social game that encourages players to either befriend other pirates out on the sea or betray their own alliances for gold and glory. The only catch is that players are limited to, at most, four players on one ship. While it’s technically possible for players to get more than four players on the same server, it’s a big hurdle, and it’s not one that’s likely to change soon.

Right now, if players want to have more than four players on one server, they need to find another player on their own ship. By using Xbox’s social features, that outsider can invite one of the galleon’s friends to their ship, then log out, relinquishing control to the new party member. This requires a galleon to chase down another ship, negotiate with its owner, and go through the rigmarole of getting the outsider to invite a fifth friend to their ship.

Fallout 76’s new changes let players build more camps, change their skills

Bethesda is giving players the ability to switch things up in Fallout 76. The newest set of changes for the game are coming to test servers, including SPECIAL loadouts, CAMP slots, and other bonuses that help long-time players keep things fresh. These changes will be available for Windows PC players to test on Feb. 5, and they are subject to change if technical or balance problems arise.

SPECIAL is a character’s stat array (Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck) that determines whether they can make certain skill checks, pick dialogue options, or effectively use certain weapons. At level 25, characters can set up SPECIAL loadouts while they’re at their base. Players can build a Punch Card Machine at their base, or use them at train stations around the world, to set up two loadouts per character. Its possible players can unlock more loadouts in the future via the real-money store, the Atomic Shop.

Resetti is (sorta) back in Animal Crossing, and players are pumped

It’s hard for me to explain why I like Resetti so much. He’s only ever yelled at me — all furrowed brows and gnashing teeth. And yet, when I heard that the Animal Crossing mole got fired from his job, I was sad. Not Resetti! He’s too important. He did end up being in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but he’s just a voice when players need to be rescued.

Resetti is not back in New Horizons, but now players can memorialize him in some way: by adding a statue of him to their yard. OK, so, it’s not even close to Resetti being back. (Where is the shouting?!) But it’s a crumb, and I’ll take it.

YouTube is finally getting a clipping feature

YouTube is working on a clips feature that will allow creators and viewers to snip out brief segments of videos and livestreams for sharing across the internet, the company announced Thursday.

YouTube is currently testing clips in a “limited alpha” phase, the company said on its support site, making the feature available to “a small group of creators” as it gathers feedback from users, according to Jensen, community manager at YouTube. At the moment, it’s only possible to create clips via the YouTube Android app or on the desktop website, although Jensen said that support for the iOS app is “coming soon.”

Ninja Theory shuts down development on Bleeding Edge

Development has ended on Bleeding Edge, less than a year after the multiplayer melee battler launched on Windows PC and Xbox One.

Developer Ninja Theory announced the end on Thursday, noting that Bleeding Edge remains active and playable. It just never drew much of an audience. SteamCharts counted the game’s PC playership at an average of 480 in its launch month of March 2020, and it’s dwindled ever since.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s new Zombies map is set in the jungles of Vietnam

Treyarch has finally revealed the latest Zombies map for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, and it’s going to send players deep into the jungles of Vietnam. After weeks of teasers, the developer showed off the first trailer for the map on Thursday.

The new map is going to be called, Firebase Z, and it’s already shaping up to change quite a bit from Black Ops Cold War’s other map. Alongside the rank-and-file zombies that players are used to seeing, Firebase Z will also include a brand new type of boss zombies that will probably spawn in specific rounds.

Sea of Thieves is dodging the expansion problem

New content can, strangely enough, be a double-edged sword for online games. Everyone loves getting to log in and open their favorite game to find new character classes, dungeons, or worlds to explore. But new content often invalidates everything that came before. World of Warcraft and Grand Theft Auto Online are both hugely popular games that struggle with this problem: The newest content is always the best, and the rest can be forgotten. Rare’s pirate game, Sea of Thieves, has neatly dodged this problem, and the latest update ensures the entire sea is worth sailing.

Sea of Thieves’ initial strategy was to release occasional expansions, and then started running a monthly update schedule. Now Rare has entirely switched to a three-month seasonal model. The map is mostly unchanged, save for the new Devil’s Roar, a volcanic region that occasionally showers players with fiery meteors. This is an opt-in hard mode for plucky players, because you can not spawn there. Players have to intentionally sail across the map and enter the region. Everything else added in these seasons is built on the existing game world.

Lara Croft’s two timelines will be unified, says Tomb Raider studio

Crystal Dynamics has plans to unify Lara Croft’s two canonical timelines as the Tomb Raider franchise observes its 25th anniversary, the studio said in a Twitter video Wednesday afternoon.

Official celebrations of Tomb Raider’s silver anniversary will start Feb. 1, said Meagan Marie, Crystal Dynamics’ community manager. Marie also pointed to the Tomb Raider Netflix animated series, announced Wednesday, which also threads into this official, unified timeline. The Tomb Raider anime is set after the events of the video game reboot trilogy, which comprises 2013’s Tomb Raider, 2015’s Rise of the Tomb Raider, and 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
