Google shuts down internal Stadia game studio

Google is shutting down its internal game development studios tasked with making video games for Stadia, the company’s game-streaming platform. Stadia GM and vice president Phil Harrison announced the closure of Stadia Games and Entertainment on Monday on the Stadia blog.

“Creating best-in-class games from the ground up takes many years and significant investment, and the cost is going up exponentially,” Harrison said. “Given our focus on building on the proven technology of Stadia as well as deepening our business partnerships, we’ve decided that we will not be investing further in bringing exclusive content from our internal development team SG&E, beyond any near-term planned games.”

World of Warcraft, Overwatch, and Diablo getting in-game goods for Blizzard’s 30th

Blizzard Entertainment is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2021, and one component of that celebration is a series of in-game goodies for the developer’s stable of games: World of Warcraft, Overwatch, Hearthstone, Diablo 3, Heroes of the Storm, StarCraft 2, and StarCraft: Remastered.

Those digital goods — which include a Reinhardt skin for Overwatch that evokes StarCraft’s beloved Terran space marine, Jim Raynor — would normally be incentives for a BlizzCon ticket. But with Blizzard’s annual fan convention going completely virtual this year, with BlizzConline, those items will be sold directly through the company’s digital store. Starting today, Blizzard fans can purchase three Celebration Collection bundles, each with its own list of goodies.

Apex Legends’ new patch adds a new Legend and destroys an old map

Apex Legends’ newest season is here and it might be one of the biggest season changes the game has ever had. Season 8’s update includes Fuse, the game’s newest Legend, the new 30-30 Repeater rifle, and a newly destroyed version of Kings Canyon, which should offer plenty of fresh areas to explore.

The biggest new addition this season is Fuse, a Legend who’s devoted to entirely to explosives. His passive ability lets him hold more grenades than other Legends and throw them more accurately. His Tactical Ability is a cluster bomb that shoots out little explosions that can stun enemy players, and his Ultimate ability brings down a missile barrage that creates a wall of flames around a small area.

MLB The Show 21 launches on PS5 — and Xbox Series X — in April

Hometown hero Fernando Tatis, Jr. is the cover star for Sony San Diego Studio’s MLB The Show 21, launching April 20, but the real news is the game also launches on Xbox One and Xbox Series X the same day.

The unusual cross-console launch of a Sony-developed game gives Xbox baseball fans their first simulation-quality game since 2013’s Major League Baseball 2K13 from Visual Concepts and 2K Sports. MLB The Show 21 will also feature cross-platform play (among Xbox and PlayStation devices) and cross-generation game save compatibility (PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5, and Xbox One to Xbox Series X).

Destiny 2 gets new Trials of Osiris loot next season

Destiny 2 season 13 will bring new Trials of Osiris armor with it, and Bungie began teasing that loot Friday with a few images posted on the game’s Twitter account.

Bungie’s weekly blog post on Thursday walked players through some new features coming to Destiny 2 in its next season, which starts Feb. 9. And now, the studio has given players a look at a loot refresh for Trials of Osiris. This came as a surprise to many, as players didn’t expect Trials of Osiris’ reward pool to change until season 14.

Bungie teases Destiny 2’s next season, recoil and bounty changes

In Bungie’s weekly blog, the studio wrote about some major changes coming to Destiny 2 in less than two weeks. When season 13 — likely called Season of the Chosen, according to some leaks — launches on Feb. 9, PC players will see some major recoil changes and all players will get new Seasonal Challenges. Bungie also gave a very small tease for season 13, and announced a reveal trailer coming Feb. 2.

The biggest announcement of the blog only affects a percentage of the player base. Currently, when using a mouse and keyboard, Destiny 2 players have next to no recoil when they fire a weapon. With season 13, Bungie will adjust the difference between controller and mouse and keyboard from 40% to 20%. Mouse players will still have a 20% advantage — as using a mouse is more difficult — but the difference shouldn’t be as stark.

Hitman 3 has more missions on the way

Hitman 3 has only been out for a couple of weeks, but it seems that IO interactive isn’t done with its World of Assassination trilogy quite yet. According to executive producer Forest Swartout Large, in and interview with The Gamer, Hitman 3 is probably getting new missions in the future.

Large says that the team at IO is always looking toward the future, and in this case that means more missions for Hitman 3. But, at the moment, it doesn’t seem like this means more locations. Instead, it seems Large and the team are focusing more on Elusive Targets or Escalation missions, and maybe even some twists on classic levels from the recent trilogy of games.
