TikTok users are celebrating Valentine’s Day through romantic Minecraft worlds

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and while sending flowers or chocolate might be a tried and true way to win hearts, others have turned to Minecraft to express their love.

The trend got big on TikTok in early January, and while the videos vary, the general gist is that people build elaborate Valentine’s Day worlds to profess their love. Often, though not always, the beau will sit on a mine cart that will take them though a roller coaster constructed specifically for them — all while songs like “Sparks” by Coldplay play in the background. At current, there are dozens of videos in this vein, some of which exceed a million views.

Unreal Engine’s next job: NPC creation in a fraction of the time

Epic Games, makers of the Unreal Engine that has powered two decades’ worth of triple-A video games, on Wednesday announced another leading-edge development tool: MetaHuman Creator, an application that can create distinctive and lifelike human characters for video games in a fraction of the time it currently takes.

“One of the most arduous tasks in 3D content creation has been constructing truly convincing digital humans,” Vladimir Mastlovic, Epic’s vice president for Digital Humans Technology, said in a statement. Epic says the character-creation process, which seasoned animators and illustrators spend days or weeks getting right, can be reduced “to less than an hour” using MetaHuman Creator’s browser-based application. The video above shows the process at work.

The next Witcher board game comes to Kickstarter in May

The Witcher franchise is expanding with a new board game from team at Go on Board. The Witcher: Old World takes place long before the saga of Geralt of Rivia, and it’s being produced in partnership with CD Projekt Red. The project heads to Kickstarter in May, with delivery expected by April 2022. No price point has been announced. Those interested can sign up to be reminded once the crowdfunding campaign goes live.

According to a news release, The Witcher: Old World is a competitive, card-driven adventure game for 2-5 players with some light role-playing elements. Player characters will each come from a different Witcher school, which could include traditional factions like the School of the Wolf, Bear, Manticore, and Crane. Each of those schools will provide players with innate abilities that, when combined with a deck of cards, can be used to create powerful combinations and synergies. Like Gloomhaven, the deck will serve as a character’s hit points as well as triggers for special abilities and attacks. The same deck will also impact their movement speed for overland travel.

Fortnite leaks suggest a Tron crossover is coming

Fortnite might be heading to the Grid, if a new teaser from the game’s official Twitter account is to be believed. Based on the tweet, and a few well-timed leaks, it seems that a Tron crossover with Fortnite is on the way.

In the teaser, a Fortnite character discovers a very old computer, and after smashing all the keys he can and hitting it a couple of times, we hear him scream along with the sound of a beam or laser that sounds suspiciously like the one that first sends Jeff Bridges’ Kevin Flynn to the Tron universe in the original movie.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War patch adds restrictions to League Play

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s League Play feature came out earlier this week but developer Treyarch is already making a few adjustments. To help keep things fair in the ranked mode, Treyarch has released a list of gear that will be disabled for all players in League Play.

The list of disabled attachments and Scorestreaks are designed to help keep some of Black Ops Cold War’s least balanced items out of its most competitive game mode. Things like suppressors are disabled, as well as certain barrels for weapons like the RPK LMG, which make some guns a little too powerful. Also on the restricted list are the armor and War Machine Scorestreaks, which could too quickly tilt the game in favor of the team that got them.

World of Warcraft’s newest event adds a ghostly twist to Torghast

Shadowlands takes place in the realms of death, and players have to leave the normal lands of World of Warcraft to go fight The Jailer and his many evil forces. Torghast, the Tower of the Damned, is a re-runnable, roguelike experience where players fight their way through multiple floors of The Jailer’s evil tower. This week, a new bonus event is running in Torghast, which makes each run a little more different.

This event is the Chorus of Dead Souls. When players start a new Torghast run, they’ll have the ability to get a toggle that turns them into a big soul tornado. These soul-forms have powerful abilities, and an interesting twist is that multiple players can jump in to control and enhance the same form. A full party of characters can become a clown car of soul torments, unleashing ghastly attacks on The Jailer’s minions.

The D&D spinoff that inspired Warmachine is being rebooted

The Iron Kingdoms setting, an alternate role-playing universe that shares some of the same mechanics as Dungeons & Dragons, is being rebooted as Iron Kingdoms: Requiem. Originally based on an older ruleset that it shared with D&D, this new version will be updated so that it is compatible with the 5th edition of the wildly popular tabletop RPG (TTRPG).

A campaign on Kickstarter is closing in on $500,000 — the project’s goal was just $100,000 — with a little more than two days left to go at time of publication. Delivery of digital and physical product is expected by September.

The Pokémon Happy Meal at McDonald’s is getting ruined by greedy adults

Right now, select McDonald’s are celebrating the 25th anniversary of Pokémon with a promotion that turns the iconic Happy Meal box into Pikachu’s face. Bundled with this cherubic container are 50 collectible cards, including some rarer holographic cards. And some people are mass buying Happy Meals to get their hands on them.

Pokémon cards are such a hot commodity that some fans say they’re having a hard time buying booster packs at big retailers. Nearly every week, there’s a new record broken for the dollars people are spending on old-school packs — and new scams to go along with that commotion.
