The Elder Scrolls: Legends finally arrives in beta

Collectible card game fans, rejoice

Bethesda Softworks launched a closed beta for The Elder Scrolls: Legends today, over a year after it was announced at E3 2015. Fans of both the open-world role-playing series and collectible card games can now register to test out the Windows PC title.

Select participants will be chosen to try out Legends starting today, while additional testers will be invited into the closed beta in the coming months. A full release has yet to be announced for the free-to-play strategy game, which will launch on both PC and iOS.

id Software founders John Romero and Adrian Carmack tease new FPS, Star Wars-style

Expect an actual reveal on April 25

Doom and Quake co-creator John Romero will apparently reveal details on his new first-person shooter next week, according to a teaser posted by Romero to YouTube yesterday. Aiding Romero in teasing that shooter is another id Software co-founder, Adrian Carmack.

Romero and Carmack, who left id in 1996 and 2005, respectively, play up "the return" to first-person shooters in a video reminiscent of the final scene of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Instead of handing Romero a lightsaber, however, Carmack extends an arm holding a keyboard and mouse.

The hard lessons of Dust 514

Project Nova is the code name for CCP's free-to-play PC first-person shooter that's being shown to the press and fans for the first time at Fanfest in Iceland.

Unlike the recently canceled PlayStation 3 title Dust 514, which tied directly into Eve Online via interactions called orbital bombardment where players in one game could influence the battles in another, there are no direct ties between Eve Online and Project Nova outside of being set in the same universe.

Push Me Pull You's body horror ball game comes to PS4 in May

Start studying up on the playbook now

Australian indie studio House House will launch Push Me Pull You on PlayStation 4 this May, the studio announced. Starting May 3, players can get way, way closer in the multiplayer sports game.

The trailer above shows that Push Me Pull You's activity of choice isn't, say, football or basketball — it's something else altogether. Two-headed bodies stretch into unnerving shapes as they fight to gain control of the ball. Not only do teams of two players share a body, but they have the option to direct their ever-changing corporeal form using just one controller, too. Watch the video to get a better sense of the unique sport at Push Me Pull You's center and even learn a few key moves.

HBO Now app launches on Xbox One

This is the best kind of surprise

Microsoft and HBO just stealth-launched an HBO Now app on Xbox One, bringing the streaming service to the console just in time for Game of Thrones' sixth season.

The 36 MB app marks the first availability of HBO Now on a gaming platform. HBO Now is one of HBO's two over-the-top streaming services, allowing customers to pay $14.99 a month for access to on-demand HBO programming without having to subscribe to a cable or satellite package. HBO Go, the network's other streaming service, must be authenticated with login information from a pay-TV provider.

Hands-on with LawBreakers, the shooter that wants you to hit a buzzer-beater

Hands-on with LawBreakers, the shooter that wants you to hit a buzzer-beater

It's not over till it's over in Cliff Bleszinski's next big project

There's a rivalry between the third and fourth floors of the Carolina Trust Building, a turn-of-last-century structure whose new tenant, Boss Key Productions, had to sign a whole lot of paperwork in order to work in a building on the National Register of Historic Places. Each day, Boss Key employees typically play about two hours of their upcoming multiplayer shooter, LawBreakers, hollering around walnut-paneled dividers and through frosted glass doors that still say things like TAILOR and N.C. MERCHANTS ASS'N.

"Josh was playing as the breacher and he thinks he's going to do some shit," said Tramell Isaac, Boss Key's art director, referring to environment artist Josh Rife, serving an all-purpose role on his floor's squad. Isaac was running around as a Vanguard, a heavy weapons role that packs a huge punch. The mode was Overcharge, which I played last week at a preview event. We'll get into the specifics in a second, but this type of game is set up so that even a team getting its ass kicked can steal victory at the end.

Rift, Vive and PSVR players will all be able to fly, and die, together

Eve: Valkyrie was a launch title on the Oculus Rift, and CCP Games has since announced that the game is coming to the HTC Vive. We've known for a while that it will also be a launch title on the PlayStation VR. The company has just announced a new, and very exciting, update to its plans for the game.

"What we haven't said before, and will for the first time here on stage is cross-platform play." Eve: Valkyrie executive producer Owen O'Brien told the cheering crowd at Fanfest in Reykjavik, Iceland.

Report: President of Star Fox Zero dev PlatinumGames steps down

PlatinumGames president Tatsuya Minami stepped down from his role leading the developer late last month, according to a report from GamesBusiness.JP. He has been replaced by Kenichi Sato, who was the executive director.

The news comes as the company celebrates its 10th anniversary and just a day before the global release of PlatinumGames' and Nintendo's Star Fox Zero, which has received mixed reviews.

As with many of Platinum Games' core team, Minami started his career at Capcom. In 2006, he left the company to found ODD Incorporated. ODD later joined forces with Seeds, Inc., a company created by former Clover members, to form PlatinumGames.

Splatoon stuff is coming to Miitomo

Start retweeting, saving your coins and racking up My Nintendo points now

A series of Splatoon-inspired items — headwear, clothing and more — are coming to Nintendo's social app Miitomo next week, giving squid-themed shooter fans the opportunity to dress their Miis like Inkling boys and girls. Getting your hands on some of these stuff is going to require some work, however.

Two items — the Inkling boy wig and Inkling girl wig — will be given away for free, provided Nintendo fans retweet the promotion's official hashtag enough on Twitter. At 10,000 retweets the boy wig will unlock, and at 20,000 the girl wig will unlock. Seeing as how the original post containing the hashtag (#Miitomo_Splatoon_RT) has already been retweeted more than 7,000 times, chances are good.
