Dark Souls board game Kickstarter campaign ends with $5.4M in pledges

One of Kickstarter's most-funded projects ever

Steamforged Games' crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter for Dark Souls: The Board Game came to a close today, ending with more than $5.4 million (£3.77 million) in pledges. That's well beyond the roughly $72,000 the board game maker was seeking and enough to make Dark Souls: The Board Game one of the most funded Kickstarter projects yet.

Dark Souls: The Board Game is now the 12th most funded campaign in Kickstarter history, coming just behind the crowdfunding campaign for Koji Igarashi's Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. Iga's spiritual successor to his Castlevania games raised more than $5.5 million in pledges in 2015.

Nearly 1M Xbox Live Gamertags will be up for grabs this week

Time to go dumpster diving, Xbox Live Gold members

Almost one million unused Gamertags will be made available to Xbox Live Gold subscribers this Wednesday, according to a press release. Gold members who have been active on the service for at least a year will be able to sift through the abandoned Gamertags starting at 11 a.m. PT on May 18.

Among the IDs to choose from are proper names, pop culture references and "some of the greatest inventions of all time," the team at Xbox Live said. Gold members worldwide can switch their personal Gamertags to one of these instead. They'll roll out over a 24-hour period, meaning the full list won't be available from the get-go.

Install it so you're ready when the servers are!

Blizzard Entertainment's Overwatch will be available at certain retailers on May 23 — one day before the game's public release date of May 24, as a NeoGAF user noticed. Amazon, Best Buy and GameStop all have the launch date listed as May 23 now.

You may be wondering why that matters, since Overwatch is an online-only game and the servers won't go live until May 24. Here's the significance: It puts retail pre-order customers in the same position as those who pre-order digital copies.

Steam Summer Sale dates allegedly leaked — again

This guy has a good track record

This year, Steam's Summer Sale will apparently begin June 23, according to a user on Reddit. MrFreemanBBQ shared a Russian-language screenshot purportedly from Valve, suggesting that this year's sale period will run from 9:45 a.m. PT on June 23 until July 4 at 10 a.m. PT.

Valve has not announced that a Summer Sale will be happening this year, but it would be in keeping with tradition. That the dates are leaked in advance — by a Russian tipster, no less — is also becoming a pattern. Last year, MrFreemanBBQ was responsible for giving Steam customers the heads up about when the Summer Sale 2015 was set to begin. After posting them on Reddit, the dates appeared on Russian social network VK, picking up further traction.

Dark Souls 3 anti-cheating patch pulled back after freeze issues surface

A patch meant to curb "deviant behavior" in the PC version of Dark Souls 3 had to be pulled back after causing freeze issues, From Software said today.

The patch was put out Friday to respond to hackers who had been able to exploit Dark Souls 3's cheat detection system to get other players banned temporarily. While the patch is being repaired, victims of these tactics "won't be penalized," From promised. In an earlier note, it said the game's server team has been checking accounts before issuing penalties

From said it hopes to get the patch fixed and re-rolled soon.

It's going straight up against Final Fantasy 15

Yo-Kai Watch 2 is launching in the United States on Sept. 30 on the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo announced this morning.

Widely considered a direct answer to Pokémon, Yo-Kai Watch 2 will do a very Pokémon thing by launching with two editions: Fleshy Souls and Bony Spirits, both featuring rare Yo-Kai only found in each game. Yo-Kai aren't monsters, they're invisible beings who inhabit the game's world, akin to gremlins who play pranks and disrupt normal life.

The company won't just license out the characters

After plummeting revenue, Nintendo is looking into new avenues to generate income, including expanding into producing its own feature films.

Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima told The Asahi Shimbun newspaper in Japan that the company was looking into producing its own films for the first time instead of just licensing out the characters. In order to do so, Nintendo would partner with different studios, but Kimishima was adamant that creative control would remain within the publisher's hands.
