Kickstarter community head quits, apologizes for controversial RPG project

Kickstarter vice president and head of community Luke Crane is departing the company after launching, and quickly canceling, a controversial game project on the crowdfunding platform in February. Kickstarter confirmed Crane’s departure, which it described as a “mutual decision,” in a statement to Polygon.

The project in question was a tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) collection titled The Perfect RPG. Crane launched the campaign on Feb. 27, and it was planned to include work by game designer Adam Koebel. Best known as the co-designer of the popular Dungeon World game system, Koebel in 2020 broadcast a TTRPG scenario involving in-fiction sexual assault live on Twitch. His handling of that scene was widely criticized by viewers and fans, and ultimately resulted in the dissolution of the actual-play series in which it occurred. Koebel apologized and later resigned from his position as co-author on Modiphius Entertainment’s Dune: Adventures in the Imperium.

Report: Call of Duty heading back to WWII in 2021

The Call of Duty series is reportedly heading back to World War II in 2021. The next game in the franchise, this one developed by Call of Duty: WWII studio Sledgehammer Games, is reportedly titled Call of Duty: WWII Vanguard and will once again have ties to Warzone, the free-to-play Call of Duty battle royale game that launched with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

Call of Duty website Modern Warzone first reported those details, many of which were later backed up by Eurogamer. One disputed detail is Call of Duty: WWII Vanguard’s time frame, which Modern Warzone indicated would would take place in the 1950s, years after World War II ended. Eurogamer reported that Vanguard has a “traditional” WWII setting.

Guacamelee studio’s new RPG takes Final Fantasy’s Job system and gets weird with it

Asked for the creative inspirations behind his studio’s next game, DrinkBox Studios co-founder Graham Smith first nodded to The Legend of Zelda, and that makes perfect sense. The top-down, overworld/underworld environment of Nobody Saves the World, coming later this summer, instantly communicates you’ll be playing an action RPG, even if this doesn’t have the puzzle-solving for which Zelda is known.

But I was not expecting to hear Final Fantasy Tactics as the game’s other spiritual parent. It doesn’t sound like Smith was, either, when a DrinkBox developer originally pitched the concept a couple of years ago.

League of Legends’ new champion is a creepy haunted doll

Riot has revealed League of Legends’ newest champion and she’s a very creepy looking doll named Gwen. In a cinematic released Friday, the developer showed off the doll’s tragic origins and gave us a preview of what she’ll look like in-game.

In Gwen’s reveal cinematic, a seamstress creates a doll and, according to the video’s description, “This doll loved her maker very much, but sadly, tragedy ripped them apart, sending the doll to sink beneath sea and sorrow.” But as she waits at the bottom of the sea, a mysterious force finds her and animates her, turning her from a doll into something else.

The internet is sad about Animal Crossing’s sold-out Sanrio cards

If you logged in this morning thinking you were going to successfully order Animal Crossing: New HorizonsSanrio amiibo cards, bless your optimistic lil’ heart. My sweet summer child, these cardboard rectangles sold out seemingly within seconds after Target set them live. The stark situation has left many a Hello Kitty aficionado upset (or at least annoyed) on Friday.

After all, many folks actually got up early just to spend money on the twee set, only to be curtailed by scalpers who are now selling the Sanrio cards for a fortune on websites like eBay. Worse, some thought they’d secured the Hello Kitty cards for pick-up in store, because their carts were full ... only to receive an error, or a message that they’d already sold out. Glitches were plentiful, judging from posts on social media and Polygon’s own experiences with the Target website.

Balan Wonderworld patched due to seizure risk

Square Enix has patched a scene in Balan Wonderworld, which was released Friday, that included flashing lights that posed a “photo-sensitive epilepsy risk.” To ensure the scene is fixed, players must install the game’s day-one patch, according to a tweet from the official Balan Wonderworld account.

“Please ensure that you install the Day 1 Patch before playing,” the company tweeted. “We have received reports of a photo-sensitive epilepsy risk from a potential flashing bug if playing the game is un-patched. The Day 1 Patch prevents this issue as well as enhances the overall play experience.”

Call of Duty: Warzone’s zombies are moving even further into Verdansk

Call of Duty: Warzone’s zombies are moving even further into Verdansk

The slow and steady infection of Call of Duty: Warzone’s map continues. In the game’s latest update, the zombies, which have been encroaching on Verdansk for the last several weeks, continued their march and made it all the way to the bank in the central-southern area of the map.

As with each previous undead advance, this one included a new briefing on the Call of Duty website, with an in-universe update on the zombies’ progress. While the previously infected areas like the Shipwreck, Prison Complex, and Verdansk Hospital seem to be cleared, the in-game commanding officers don’t seem to have a theory as to where the zombies are going or what their goal is.

Upcoming horror game Forewarned looks like Phasmophobia in tombs

Egyptian co-op horror game Forewarned was announced on Thursday, and is planned for Steam in early access for both Windows PC and virtual reality. In Forewarned, the players are archeologists who are diving into the tomes of the Mejai in a search for lost artifacts.

Players of Phasmophobia, the ghost-hunting game popular on Twitch, will immediately see some similarities in Forewarned, as both games have a crew of experts investigating a procedurally-generated environment in search of answers while being hunted by scary, murderous monsters.
