How Britain's decision to leave the EU affects Game of Thrones

Last night, the people of Britain made a historical decision to leave the European Union, leading to massive and almost instantaneous repercussions around the world in the financial sector. While the most consequential effects of the referendum started to explode immediately, like the fall of the British Pound, there may also be long term issues that face the entertainment and tech industries, including the production of HBO's flagship series Game of Thrones.

Game of Thrones, which is filmed throughout Europe, and movies like Star Wars, which are mainly filmed in London's Pinewood Studio location, may find it tougher to not only film in different locations — like Spain, for example — but may also face increased problems in hiring talent from across Europe and could face larger tariffs on future productions.

Firma is a wonderful VR game about working, and fighting, on the moon

It was just missing one thing...

Firma is an early access game for the Oculus Rift that takes a fantastical situation, you're working on the moon, and makes it seem almost banal. The game begins by giving you the oddly comfortable feeling that this is a job, and not a particularly exciting one at that.

Then it begins to ratchet up the tension as the story develops, and you may begin to question what you thought you knew about the work you've been doing.

How are UK-based game developers responding to Brexit?

After Britain votes to leave the European Union, where does the country's game industry stand?

The people of the United Kingdom voted to exit the European Union last night, a controversial, unexpected result that is expected to have serious economic and cultural ramifications. Some of these have already gone into effect: The British pound has fallen to its lowest value since 1985 as the global market heads toward an uncertain future.

The full effect of the U.K. pulling out of the EU won't be immediately apparent, as the departure process will take years to finalize. Yet critics have already voiced concerns about the weight it will carry on citizens, businesses and the immigrants whose current residence in the country a number of pro-"Brexit" supporters cited as a major reason for their vote. These include members of the British gaming industry, many of whom Polygon reached out to for their thoughts on Britain's pending independence.

Oculus will no longer use software to block Rift games from playing on the Vive

A quiet update removed the hardware check

We were able to play Oculus-exclusive games and demos using the HTC Vive back in April using a third-party program, although Oculus quickly added a software check that would ensure its games were running on the Rift. The creator of the program, called Revive, responded by cracking Oculus' DRM completely.

It looks like the arms race is over, as Oculus has removed the hardware check from its software.

System Shock reboot opens for crowdfunding next week — here's your preview

System Shock is still getting remastered, but don't call it System Shock Remastered anymore.

Just ahead of the game's Kickstarter campaign launch, developer Night Dive Studios told Polygon that the upcoming re-imagination of Looking Glass Technologies' 1994 game has a new name now: System Shock.

"We felt that the amount of passion and resources that we are putting into this game elevated it beyond the expectations that someone would have for a remaster," CEO Stephen Kick said. "This is a full-fledged reboot of a classic game into something new."

Whore of the Orient unlikely to come out

After years of development, we'll probably never see it

It’s been nearly three years since we’ve heard anything about Whore of the Orient, the spiritual successor to L.A. Noire in development by a team lead by the creator of that original Rockstar title, Brendan McNamara.

Today, it seems, maybe the last we hear of it. Derek Proud, producer on the game, said in an interview this week that he doesn’t believe the game will ever come out.

Counter-Strike player files suit against Valve over ‘illegal gambling’ surrounding CSGO

Valve accused of profiting from global gambling marketplace

A Counter-Strike: Global Offensive player filed suit against Valve today, accusing the game maker of allowing an "illegal online gambling market" to spring up and propagate around the popular online shooter.

Valve Corporation, the suit says, "knowingly allowed ... and has been complicit in creating, sustaining and facilitating [a] market" where players and third-parties trade weapon skins like casino chips.
