Upcoming horror game Forewarned looks like Phasmophobia in tombs

Egyptian co-op horror game Forewarned was announced on Thursday, and is planned for Steam in early access for both Windows PC and virtual reality. In Forewarned, the players are archeologists who are diving into the tomes of the Mejai in a search for lost artifacts.

Players of Phasmophobia, the ghost-hunting game popular on Twitch, will immediately see some similarities in Forewarned, as both games have a crew of experts investigating a procedurally-generated environment in search of answers while being hunted by scary, murderous monsters.

Here’s what Bloodborne might look like running at 4K, 60 fps on PS5

Bloodborne fans have pleaded for an update to the game since Sony’s more powerful PlayStation 4 Pro was revealed in 2016. But those fans have had no relief, not even on PlayStation 5, where Bloodborne runs much as it did on the original PlayStation 4. Modders have since stepped in to patch in unofficial support for 60 frames per second refresh rates, and now the folks at Digital Foundry have taken things a step further, giving Bloodborne a 4K makeover.

Digital Foundry pulled this off with the help of an AI image-upscaling tool called Video Enhance AI by Topaz Labs, processing pre-recorded 1080p resolution footage up to 4K resolution. It’s not perfect, and as Digital Foundry’s Richard Leadbetter and John Linneman point out, much of that has to do with Bloodborne’s “distinctive visual quirks.” The game’s anti-aliasing, chromatic aberration, and specular aliasing make for a “noisy image,” Digital Foundry explains, visual quirks that AI upscaling models may not know how to contend with.

Sega delays strategy game Humankind to August

The release date for Humankind, the historical strategy game from the Sega-owned Amplitude, has been delayed to Aug. 17.

The postponement — Humankind was originally expected to arrive in April — will give the developers just a little more time to perfect aspects of the game like accessibility, onboarding, pacing, balancing, diplomacy, AI, and so on. Per the news release from the studio, the team identified areas of the game to improve through community feedback during the game’s recent open testing phase. If you’re interested in a full detailed list of what Amplitude is working on you can check out the developer’s blog here.

Hearthstone’s 2014-era Classic mode is now live

Today, Hearthstone players can log in and play the collectible card game like it’s 2014 again. Hearthstone Classic is a new game mode comprised of 240 cards from Basic, Classic, and the Hall of Fame. Every card has been reverted to its 2014 design, so everyone’s back in an age where Ragnaros the Firelord, Leeroy Jenkins, and Baine Bloodhoof are heavy hitting legendary competitive cards.

Classic joins Standard and Wild modes, which both grant the player access to different card libraries. In Standard, players are able to create decks out of the most recent expansions and a curated set of base cards. In Wild, players have access to all of the expansions, allowing them to create some very silly combinations of cards from over the years.

Sony developing Ghost of Tsushima movie with John Wick director

Sony Pictures is developing a movie adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima, Sucker Punch Productions’ 2020 samurai action-adventure game, Deadline reported Thursday. John Wick film series director Chad Stahelski is reportedly attached to direct the project, sometime after filming John Wick 4.

Ghost of Tsushima is the latest project for PlayStation Productions, the division formed in 2019 to oversee film and TV projects based on PlayStation franchises. So far, that includes a major motion picture based on Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series, a television series for HBO based on The Last of Us, and an adaptation of car-combat franchise Twisted Metal.

Magic: The Gathering’s Strixhaven is more than just a Hogwarts pastiche

Magic: The Gathering’s Strixhaven is more than just a Hogwarts pastiche

On the surface, Magic: The Gathering’s new set, Strixhaven: School of Mages, looks like a simple pastiche of Harry Potter’s Hogwarts. That’s definitely part of its charm. But the intricacies of this new set — and the promise of its accompanying lore — could make it the biggest release of the year.

This set isn’t a just another random corner of the sprawling Magic multiverse. It feels like an attempt to give the game a new center — at least for now. Along the way, Strixhaven will pose a lot of interesting questions: What if all the known spells in the universe were archived together in one place, buried inside a mysterious library? What if the students hungry for that knowledge were powerful young mages, eager-eyed recruits with a smattering of sexy co-eds? And what if one of the professors was living a secret double life, wracked by confusion and guilt?

Back 4 Blood delayed until October

Back 4 Blood, the spiritual follow-up to Left 4 Dead from series creator Turtle Rock Studios, has been delayed until Oct. 12. The company announced the delay on Thursday with a short statement on Twitter.

Back 4 Blood was originally scheduled to come out on June 22, but according to Turtle Rock, the developers need more time to get the game to where they’d like it. Fortunately, fans won’t have to wait all the way until the fall to try the game’s zombie action. In the same statement, Turtle Rock also announced that it plans to release an open beta for Back 4 Blood sometime this summer.

The updated strategy game, now known as Total War: Rome Remastered, will offer 4K visuals, overhauled character models, cross-platform multiplayer, new gameplay content, and more when it comes to Linux, Mac, and Windows PC on April 29.

Rome: Total War is the third title in Creative Assembly’s long-running series of military strategy games, and is hailed as one of the best in the franchise (as well as one of the best strategy games of all time). The remastered version will include the original game content, the Barbarian Invasion and Alexander expansions, and 16 previously unplayable factions.
