Pokémon Go fans rage as tracking site shuts down, footsteps glitch 'fixed'

Pokévision says it is 'respecting Niantic and Nintendo's wishes'; closure may be indefinite

Pokévision, one of the most popular tracking websites for finding Pokémon in Pokémon Go, appears to have shut down, a week after the CEO of the studio that developed the game warned that such services may no longer work.

Forbes and then Kotaku both noticed the closure early this morning. Pokévision was not affiliated with Niantic Labs, Pokémon Go's maker, or the app itself. It was a third-party knowledge base that revealed where specific Pokémon would spawn on a player's map and how long they would be available. Pokévision's FAQ said its data came straight from Niantic, which may have been a violation of the Pokémon Go terms of service.

Xbox One summer update begins its rollout to users

New features, such as Background Music, are coming to the console

Xbox One's summer update has begun rolling out to users this weekend. It may take a couple of days for some to receive the prompt that downloads the patch, but the update delivering Cortana, background music and more is on the way now.

The summer update is the roughly same collection of features pushed to Xbox One Preview in early June. The two biggest inclusions are Background Music and Cortana, and the game collection window has been cleaned up and made more useful, particularly in installing and updating games.

Wait a minute, is EA Sports making a Canadian Football League game? What?

League executive says they are, but it'd be a CFL re-skin of regular Madden

Comments by an executive with a Canadian Football League franchise have re-stirred rumors that the league has some kind of deal going with EA Sports to bring a CFL game to consoles.

I have reached out to EA Sports representatives for clarification, but Dennis Skulsky, the president of the CFL's BC Lions, was quoted by a TSN radio producer yesterday afternoon as saying EA Sports was making a "stand alone" game involving the nine clubs in the Canadian Football League, with the league's real players, past and present.

Valve widens Counter-Strike gambling crackdown, tells another 20 sites to close

Including one linked to a popular streamer banned from Twitch

Valve has threatened another 20 websites with legal action if they don't end their "skin gambling" operations in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and one of them is a site connected to a popular streamer recently booted from Twitch for the practice.

That site is CSGO Shuffle; in this report on July 16. James "PhantomL0rd" Varga was alleged to be one of its owners. Varga was banned from Twitch four days later under a new policy in which live streams of betting competitions in Global Offensive are forbidden.

No criminal charges in 38 Studios case, say Rhode Island officials

Concludes a four-year investigation into collapse of Amalur developer

Rhode Island authorities closed a four-year investigation into the collapse of 38 Studios with a decision not to bring criminal charges, saying that a bad business deal does not necessarily make it a crime.

Rhode Island's attorney general and the superintendent of the State Police there announced the decision yesterday, noting that the Rhode Island taxpayers, who guaranteed $89 million of 38 Studios' debt, would not be happy with it.

Nathan Drake’s big screen adventure is still happening

Sony is taking another stab at its Uncharted film adaptation with a new writer. Variety reports that Joe Carnahan, whose writing credits include Smokin’ Aces, The A-Team and The Grey, has been tapped to pen the big screen take on adventurer Nathan Drake.

Carnahan, who also directed the aforementioned action films, is not attached to direct the Uncharted adaptation, however. He’ll be busy helming Bad Boys 3, instead.

PlayStation is one of the only bright spots in Sony’s quarterly earnings

Turns out Uncharted 4 did pretty well

The first quarter of Sony’s 2016 fiscal year saw marked declines in sales and/or operating income almost everywhere across the company — except in the PlayStation division, according to the company’s quarterly earnings report.

Sony reported sales of 1.61 trillion yen ($15.66 billion) during the three-month period ending June 30, a 10.8 percent year-over-year decrease. The company’s operating income of 56.2 billion yen ($546 million) was 42 percent lower than in the same quarter in 2015.

Japanese Pokémon fans can give Ditto a big squeeze next week

Listen: It’s Friday. It’s been a very, very long week. There is nothing I want more right now than some sleep. Actually, there may be one thing: a hug from the super-sized Ditto pillow, on sale at the Japanese Pokémon Center next week.

Ditto has always struck me as the squishiest Pokémon, and that comes through in its latest cuddly translation. That dumb little face just demands to be squeezed, and it’ll only cost me $127 to do so when this gigantic plush is released on Aug. 6.
