No Man's Sky's day-one patch dramatically builds out and changes the entire game

Universe generation algorithm changed, inventories expanded, storyline rewritten and much more

The day-one patch for No Man's Sky is less of an update and more of a comprehensive overhaul, according to the lengthy notes Hello Games founder Sean Murray published yesterday.

Ship and personal inventories are being expanded (by multiples of 5 and 2.5, respectively), planets have a wider diversity of creatures, and those creatures now have a diet, where proper feeding enables their assistance. The universe generation algorithm has been changed, (meaning planets will move) with the goal of bringing more variety to the galaxies, which also are "up to 10x larger" post-patch.

Pre-purchasers can play the class in WoW beginning Aug. 9

The Demon Hunter is World of Warcraft's second "hero class" since the first was introduced eight years ago in Wrath of the Lich King. It's playable on Tuesday for those who have preordered the next expansion, Legion. Blizzard fired out this developer preview of the class today to give players an idea of what the Demon Hunter can do.

The class is based on Illidan Stormrage, the main antagonist of 2007's Burning Crusade. (A comprehensive video about the lore supporting the Demon Hunter class can be viewed here.) In the preview, designers Eric Maloof and Graham Berger say that Illidan's return gives them an opportunity to expand on the events of Burning Crusade and the fate of Illidan and his demon hunters.

What do you think

To no one's surprise, Pokémon Go has been banned in Iran.

This isn't a religious condemnation of the game, though. According to BBC News, it comes from the nation's High Council of Virtual Spaces, which considers the game a security threat.

Why is Arkane's upcoming Prey game a Prey game at all?

Why is Arkane's upcoming Prey game a Prey game at all?

How Arkane's project got matchmade with Bethesda's IP

Arkane's upcoming "reimagining" of the 2006 shooter Prey made its gameplay debut at QuakeCon 2016 and, as expected, didn't remotely resemble either the original title or what we saw of its canceled sequel.

Not that that's a bad thing — not by a long shot. The Prey we saw at Quakecon had some of the best elements of Arkane's smash-hit game Dishonored, giving its protagonist a slate of diverse powers and tools to solve abilities any way the player saw fit. Despite the brevity of that presentation, it was easy to see what Arkane is going for with Prey. It looked polished and exciting, and nothing like the decade-old shooter that preceded it.

Unappetizing

Capcom has made a few things clear about Resident Evil 7 biohazard, the company’s back to basics approach to its survival horror franchise: the company isn’t saying much about it, in an attempt to keep the game’s particulars mysterious; it won’t feature superhero action stars or quicktime events; and some classic Resident Evil hallmarks will return.

Just like in the first Resident Evil, green herbs will be one of the items players will use to heal damage. Today, Capcom showed Resident Evil Ambassadors — fans who signed up to receive Capcom’s newsletter — what those healing items will look like.

No Man’s Servers but Hello Games’

No Man's Sky developer Hello Games plans to reset the game’s servers before the game launches, meaning that everyone will start with a clean slate on day one.

Harry Denholm, senior programmer at the studio, said on Twitter today that the No Man’s Sky "servers are being wiped Sunday." Denholm included a screenshot of a Kotaku piece alongside his tweet, as if to nullify the article — the excerpt mentioned that there is a planet named after Kotaku in No Man’s Sky, and that players will be able to discover it when the game launches publicly next week.

New Steam gifting restrictions make it harder for cheaters to bounce back after bans

New Steam gifting restrictions make it harder for cheaters to bounce back after bans

No more gifting games to cheaters

Valve issued a new measure to curb cheating on Steam, placing restrictions on gifting titles meant to keep banned accounts from getting back in the game. These limitations are listed on the Steam Support page, breaking down how things are changing when it comes to giving games away.

Unlike before, players can no longer store copies of games equipped with anti-cheating software in their inventories. Instead, if a user want to play or gift a title, they must do so immediately. Steam users can’t gift games to other banned users, however, or else they won’t be able to gift that particular game again.

Overwatch’s Competitive Play season wraps soon ahead of sophomore season kickoff

These are your last two weeks to up that skill rating

Season one of Overwatch’s competitive mode will end on Aug. 17, Blizzard Entertainment announced on its Battle.net forum. Players will have until 5 p.m. PT that day to take part until Competitive Play goes offline before its second season begins in September.

That’s a day earlier than originally announced. When the popular hero shooter's more intense gameplay mode launched in June, Blizzard said it would run through Aug. 18. That’s not a major difference, of course, but it means a few hours less with Competitive Play.
