Nintendo Direct returns this week for a 3DS spotlight

We’re warning you now: Don’t expect NX news

Nintendo will broadcast a Nintendo Direct presentation focused on its Nintendo 3DS line-up this Thursday, Sept. 1. The stream will begin at 10 a.m. ET and look exclusively at upcoming 3DS titles — so don’t go in looking for news on anything else.

In fact, the company made it a point to tell fans that it won’t be touching on its upcoming, codename NX hardware in the Nintendo Direct. (The Wii U console also is unlikely to feature in the presentation.) The rumor is that Nintendo will unveil its next gaming system sometime this fall, since the company neglected to reveal the console at this year’s E3 event.

No 4K support, but gosh it's cute.

Sony still hasn’t admitted that the PlayStation 4 Slim is a real thing that exists, but yet another unboxing video of the hardware has been released. This time the hardware has fallen into the hands of reporter Laura Kate Dale, who previously chided Sony for its unwillingness to change the PR strategy for the system after the hardware has been found in the wild.

You can check out the system in the video below. It looks pretty good.

French education minister wants rare Pokémon banned from schools

Sorry, kids

Pokémon Go has already been called out multiple times for allowing Pokémon to be caught in regions or areas that should be left unpopulated out of respect. Now, France’s education minister, Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, is asking Niantic to remove rare Pokémon from every school in the country.

The AP reported that Vallaud-Belkacem confirmed at a press conference yesterday that she would be meeting with Niantic to discuss the possibility of removing Pokémon from schools in France. According to Vallaud-Belkacem, while she doesn’t have a problem with the game itself, she’s worried that having rare Pokémon available in a school would tempt non-students to enter the grounds to try and catch it.

Gran Turismo Sport delayed to 2017

Taking a little longer to finish that last lap

Gran Turismo Sport won’t see release until sometime next year, Polyphony Digital announced this morning on the PlayStation Blog. Originally scheduled for a Nov. 15 launch in North America and Japan, the game has been pushed back so that the developer can spend "more time to perfect [it]."

"We do not want to compromise the experience in any way," creator Kazunori Yamauchi wrote. "While we cannot confirm a new release date at this time, we are more committed than ever to making GT Sport the best Gran Turismo game to date."

Tour the NFL's newest stadium with Madden NFL 17

Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium is already open — in a video game

Minnesota's brand-new U.S. Bank Stadium hosted its first football game on Sunday, and yet it's not the newest stadium in Madden NFL 17. That title belongs to Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which isn't due to open until sometime next year, but is fully available to gamers now.

Listed as "Falcons (New)" in the pregame options menu, Mercedes-Benz Stadium is for now immediately playable only in one-off, offline games. But Falcons fans can already get a feel for the team's new home — including the one-of-a-kind "halo" scoreboard ringing the building's oculus — and if they select the team in Franchise mode, it will move there once the 2017 season begins. (Falcons opponents will also see the stadium when they visit beginning in the 2017 season.)

Frostpunk is a steampunk survival game set on a frozen world

From 11 bit studios, creator of This War of Mine

Frostpunk, a new game from This War of Mine and Anomaly developer 11 Bit Studios, is taking a more serious (but still fantastical) approach to what survival means in a video game. The Polish studio's new title, coming to Windows PC in 2017, focuses on "empathy and decision-making rather than optimization and resource management," its creators say.

The world of Frostpunk imagines what culture and society would look like in a dangerous frozen world where steam-powered technology has been developed in order to fend off the inescapable cold. According to its developer, Frostpunk will feature "complex and demanding gameplay" where players will face tough moral choices.

Try Y2K: A Postmodern RPG for free next week

Stand-alone episode of the upcoming hipster JRPG-like

The upcoming Y2K: A Postmodern RPG has a killer log line — a ‘90s-set, small-town mystery with gameplay that developer Ackk Studios describes as "a bit of Persona 4, Paper Mario, some Earthbound, and a lot of Wild Arms and Lufia 2" — but there have been few chances for grungy Japanese role-playing game fans to try it themselves yet. Next Tuesday, Sept. 6, Ackk Studios seeks to rectify that by releasing Y2K’s first demo online for free.

The demo won’t include a snippet of the actual Y2K, however. Instead, it will be a complete, original episode using the full game’s engine. A self-contained story set within the same timeline as Y2K gives way to a town to explore and a dungeon to conquer, as well as music from composers with familiar credits, like Undertale, Secret of Mana and Two Brothers, Ackk Studios’ last game.

Some Pokémon Go accounts are being unbanned

There’s hope for you yet

Pokémon Go developer Niantic Labs is holding firm on its stance against unauthorized third-party services that work with the game, but the company said today that it will be reinstating some accounts of users who may have been inadvertently causing chaos on the game’s servers.

The accounts in question may have been using software that Niantic refers to as "add-on map apps," which are user-created tools that show you where you can find particular Pokemon around you.

Hot Lava looks like Mirror’s Edge mixed with your childhood imagination

Klei Entertainment’s next game is its first 3D game

The next game from Klei Entertainment, the developer behind Mark of the Ninja, Invisible, Inc. and Don’t Starve, is a nod to childhood games of the imagination. Hot Lava is a first-person platformer in which players will jump from coffee tables to couch cushions, through elementary school hallways and nightmare worlds all with one thing in common: The floor is lava.

Klei calls Hot Lava "a game of dexterity and ingenuity" filled with "treacherous obstacles" for players to leap, slide and swing across. The game’s debut trailer shows what players will have to contend with in Hot Lava (spoiler: it’s hot lava) in a variety of settings.
