Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children to get 4K HDR remaster June 8

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, a CG-animated follow-up to the hit 1997 video game Final Fantasy 7, made absolutely no sense to me when I saw it upon its release in 2005. The movie’s sci-fi jargon is difficult to follow, even if you’re familiar with the game. It’s a feast for the eyes, though, bringing an uncanny beauty to the once-blocky characters of FF7, inspiring fans everywhere to say, “If only the game had looked this good.”

It’s 2021 now, and that has (sort of) happened. Final Fantasy 7 Remake brought Advent Children-level polish to Cloud’s sad little face, and now there are fans new to the franchise who never saw him looking any other way. Meanwhile, Advent Children has also gotten some polishing over the years, having been rereleased on Blu-ray in 2009 as Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete with an additional 26 minutes of material.

‘Perfect’ Super Mario Bros. speedrun beat after two years

Four minutes and 55 seconds: for two years, this was the fastest anyone could beat the original Super Mario Bros. for the NES. It’s such a precise world record that there’s been debate since 2018 over whether or not it could ever be toppled. Within the community, the mere idea of a 4:54 run became legendary.

Plenty have tried. Actually, as of this writing, the Super Mario Bros. speedrun leaderboard has over 10 records in the 4:55 range, the difference between them coming down to milliseconds. And getting there is no joke — as YouTuber Bismouth explains in the documentary below, thousands of runs end before the flagpole on the first level.

Valkyrae just became one of the few female co-owners of an esports team

The ever-popular streamer Rachel “Valkyrae” Hofstetter is now a co-owner of the gaming and lifestyle brand, 100 Thieves. “I’m proud to be one of the first women co-owners in esports and beyond excited for our future together,” Hofstetter shared via her personal Twitter account.

The announcement marks a new milestone in what has been a extraordinary career for the personality. Hofstetter streamed for the esports organization for three years before being announced as a co-owner, along with mainstream stars like Drake. While it’s unclear what the role will mean in terms of responsibilities, the move is notable when you consider Valkyrae’s career. While celebrities can and do announce esports partnerships because they’ve got money to play around with, Valkyrae is a streamer who has grinded her way to the top. Not only is she one of the biggest women streamers around, she can now say that she is a stakeholder in the business that signed her to begin with.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Warzone have a powerful new sniper rifle

There’s a new long-range weapon for players to try out in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Warzone, the ZRG 20mm sniper rifle. The new sniper is the latest weapon Treyarch has added during the game’s second season.

The ZRG is a bolt-action sniper rifle with a relatively slow rate-of-fire. But what it lacks in speed it makes up for in power. The weapon has extremely high damage and is a one-shot kill if you hit an enemy in the head, stomach, shoulders, or torso. On top of that, the weapon is actually so powerful that it does significant damage to vehicles as well, something few guns can offer in Black Ops Cold War or Warzone.

It will be Augusta National’s first appearance in a golf video game since 2013’s Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Genshin Impact fans are up in arms over everything right now

Fans of miHoYo’s Genshin Impact caused two hashtags, “#boycottgenshimpact” and “#DoBetterMihoyo” to trend on Twitter on April 6, in what amounted to mass criticism of the free-to-play gacha game. So far, the #boycottgenshinimpact tag alone has been tweeted out over 12,000 times.

It all started when an unconfirmed leak about the game claimed that new content, which supposedly includes new places to explore, would be getting delayed. MiHoYo did not respond to a request for comment in time for publication.
