Star Citizen single-player delayed again

No date given for the release of Squadron 42

This year’s CitizenCon celebrated the fourth anniversary of the beginning of the Star Citizen development process. It also marked the announcement of the further delay of the single-player portion of the game.

Chris Roberts’ team at Roberts Space Industries was expected to have the first episode of Star Citizen’s single-player module, called Squadron 42, available in the fall of last year. That release window has slipped again and again, with news of the latest delay coming from Roberts himself while live onstage in Los Angeles.

Pokémon Generations returns to Johto and the days of hunting down legendaries

Pokémon Generations returns to Johto and the days of hunting down legendaries

This one goes out to the Johto fans out there

Pokémon Generations’ sixth episode, above, deviates from the previous shorts this season for a quieter, more elegiac story. Those who swear by the second generation of games may want to get a tissue box ready, because "The Reawakening" tugs right at the nostalgic heartstrings.

It’s not really a sad episode, however; it’s just that Eusine, its narrator and Pokémon Crystal’s leading Suicine researcher, has such a wistful tone as he recounts the discovery of several legendary Pokémon. Anyone who’s played Pokémon Silver, Gold and Crystal to death will find the poetic origins of Ho-Oh, Suicune, Entei and Raikou both familiar and moving, in large part due to watching it unfold in beautiful animation.

Behold, the Oculus Rift condom

Behold, the Oculus Rift condom

How Oculus kept its Rifts clean through dozens of demos

It can be hard to keep the actual virtual reality hardware clean when you’re demoing the experience to dozens, if not hundreds, of people. But Oculus has a pretty good solution: The company kept rolls of what I dubbed “Rift condoms” at every booth during Oculus Connect 3.

The individuals working the show were more than happy to show me the rolls of virtual reality prophylactics, although they didn’t seem to repeat my term for the adhesive strips that would keep the player from feeling the forehead sweat of the player before them.

Rumor: Overwatch’s Sombra and Halloween event details leak

Halloween costumes and a new gameplay mode appear to be coming

Our first look at Overwatch’s next character may be here a little earlier than Blizzard planned — that is, if the supposed leak of the hacker known as Sombra isn’t part of the developer’s ongoing alternate reality game.

An image posted to Imgur, Gyazo, DeviantArt and elsewhere claims to show Sombra, "one of the world’s best and most notorious hackers," in the flesh. The image appears to have been leaked from an internal website at Blizzard and says that Sombra "will be hacking her way into the build later tonight," though it’s not clear when the photo was taken.

Billion dollar Resident Evil movie franchise found success by respecting video games

It takes hubris to ignore source material

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter will be packed with "big kick-ass action scenes" and "really, really scary scenes" as it returns Alice to Raccoon City to finally wrap up all of the questions that have long plagued the movies and its central character, director Paul W.S. Anderson told an audience during a New York Comic Con panel today.

"This is the conclusion to the series, we're bringing it full circle and all of the questions that have been hanging over it are all going to be answered by this movie," Anderson said. "This is the movie where we discover the truth about her and the truth about the Umbrella Corporation."

Polybius, the arcade game of urban legend, is coming to PlayStation VR

From the creator of Tempest 2000 and Space Giraffe

Game developer Jeff Minter, creator of trippy arcade game fare like Tempest 2000, Space Giraffe, Gridrunner and TxK, is bringing his next game to PlayStation VR exclusively, according to a post on the PlayStation Blog. Minter’s calling his next project Polybius, a name that carries with it more than 25 years of video game urban legend.

Minter’s Polybius, as described on the PlayStation Blog, is a take on that classic arcade game legend (minus the government agents), full of "ludic psychedelia" and splashes of "Robotronian" color. But unlike the Polybius of lore, which allegedly gave players nightmares and amnesia, Minter says his PlayStation VR game is almost meditative.

Mafia 3 confronts players with the horror of racism, but I’m not sure it will last

Developer Hangar 13 wants to address real issues, but it’s still trapped in the structure of a traditional action game

The first thing you see after you press the start button in Mafia 3 is a long, sober message from developer Hangar 13. It’s a jarring start to the game, but it sets the tone for the experience to come.

"Mafia 3 takes place in a fictionalized version of the American South in 1968," the message reads. "We sought to create an authentic and immersive experience that captures this very turbulent time and place, including depictions of racism."
