Nintendo Switch’s best, most revealing meme is antisocial ‘Karen’

“We’re DRINKING, Karen”

We’ve watched the Nintendo Switch reveal video enough times now to have it memorized, beat-by-beat, as have other loyal Nintendo fans. One moment that’s stuck out in particular is the saga of “Karen,” the well-dressed urban chick with a cute haircut and a crippling addiction to her handheld. The (unnamed, officially) woman’s brief appearance playing the new Super Mario game at a rooftop party has begotten one of the budding community’s quirkiest obsessions — and perhaps assuages some of older Nintendo fans’ own fears along the way.

Tumblr user Joematar gave birth to the Karen joke shortly after the trailer’s release in a post that mocks her inability to leave her Nintendo Switch at home.

Anything can happen on Halloween

As excited as we were by the Tiny Box of Raisins Easter egg, the latest revelation from Destiny’s Festival of the Lost Halloween event trumps it pretty handily. As unearthed by Reddit user NomNomzombie17, with about 30 seconds of effort players can traverse planets on a broom instead of a classic Sparrow.

It seems the Tower’s beloved Sweeper Bot has lost his broom, but it’s not hard to find. Just head down to the rarely used lounge area below the Tower hangar. Near the back, just past the Emotes kiosk, hop up onto the shelves on the right-hand side and you’ll see a prompt to “Recover” it. Here’s a video to show you the way:

It only took a year!

Perhaps the most exciting part of Destiny’s second annual Halloween event, Festival of the Lost, is that players have finally found a purpose for one the oddest items from last year’s Festival: the Tiny Box of Raisins.

The eight-step quest, discovered by a group on Reddit calling itself “the Tiny Box of Raisins Clan,” lets players trade their precious raisins (which many players have been hoarding for a year now) for increasingly odd treats. Players who aren’t sitting on old raisins can still play along, but last year’s raisins, which recently became Ascendant Raisins, will let players skip the first step of the quest.

Watch 40 beautiful minutes of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild running on a Wii U

Watch 40 beautiful minutes of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild running on a Wii U

We would much prefer to see it on a Switch, but what can you do?

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the confirmed Nintendo Switch game we’ve seen most extensively this point — albeit never running on the upcoming hybrid. In large part, that’s because Nintendo only introduced us to the Switch last week, months after confirming that Breath of the Wild would be launching alongside it in March 2017. Still, those clamoring for more Switch — and Zelda — time can’t seem to have it both ways just yet: Nintendo uploaded a lengthy new video yesterday of the game’s less exciting Wii U version.

That’s not to say Breath of the Wild doesn’t look spectacular on Wii U. The guys from the popular Japanese variety show Game Center DX run through the game’s vast world and seem to have a blast with Link’s latest adventure. There are luscious green forests that play home to some angry beasts for Link to tear down, as well as a beautiful sunset to marvel at around the 28-minute mark.

Halloween’s Michael Myers coming to Dead by Daylight

John Carpenter’s serial killer is home for the holiday

'Tis the season for Halloween-themed content in video games, and the developers of multiplayer horror game Dead by Daylight are taking the opportunity quite literally. Halloween’s Michael Myers and Laurie Strode — Jamie Lee Curtis’ character from John Carpenter’s 1978 film — are coming to the game as downloadable content this week, just in time for Halloween.

Michael Myers and Laurie Strode are coming to the game as a new playable killer and new playable survivor, respectively. The Halloween-themed DLC, which costs $6.99, will also come with a new environment, Haddonfield.

Pokémon Sun and Moon demo hides more secrets if you keep playing

Don’t just play the demo one time, man

We’ve seen much of what Pokémon Sun and Moon have to offer ahead of their November launch, thanks to the day-one datamining of its demo. That’s a definite disappointment for some Pokémon fans who have tried hard to stay in the dark about the full Pokédex, fate of some much maligned moves and other features. But as others are sharing on YouTube and Reddit, returning to the demo day after day turns up its own set of secrets.

Talking to the folks around the demo’s main area results in some curious dialogue, which has pointed players toward a seeming calendar of events. YouTuber FeintAttacks has a list of them, providing dates on which Pokémon fans should dip back into the demo to reap the rewards.

Titanfall 2 on PS4 Pro runs at higher resolution, more stable frame rate

Titanfall 2 on PS4 Pro runs at higher resolution, more stable frame rate

Not native 4K

Titanfall 2 will benefit from a smoother frame rate and a higher resolution on the PlayStation 4 Pro, reports Stevivor.

Executive producer Drew McCoy told Stevivor that because the PS4 Pro is simply “a PS4 that’s faster,” the game will more reliably deliver a frame rate of 60 frames per second. Titanfall 2 uses dynamic resolution scaling on both PS4 and Xbox One, a technique in which the game adjusts resolution on the fly in an effort to maintain 60 fps. McCoy said that the power boost provided by the PS4 Pro means that when the game is running on Sony’s new console, it needs to scale down the resolution less often.

Chat service Discord gets enhanced security after vulnerabilities discovered

Symantec says it’s working to make the free chat service safer

Security firm Symantec, makers of the popular line of Norton consumer software products, says that users of the Discord service could be at risk. It seems that malicious malware has been making the rounds, and the company is working with Discord to remove those files and better protect users going forward.

“Symantec Security Response contacted Discord’s security team when the discovery was made,” Symantec said in a news release. “Discord quickly removed the malicious files from the servers’ chat channels. Discord has since added a new virus scan feature which runs on the backend whenever a user uploads an executable or archive file.”

Super Mario 64 has one coin you will never be able to collect

Enter the truly impossible coin

In 2014, YouTuber pannenkoek2012 collected Super Mario 64’s most mythicized "impossible coins," a coin that was long out of reach. Two years later, he's discovered yet another coin hidden in the Nintendo 64 classic that players will never, ever be able to collect. The programming-obsessed Super Mario fan uploaded another video yesterday, detailing how the game’s 2,093rd coin has hidden beneath the surface for 20 years, leaving players unaware.

Somewhere in the enlarged version of the Tiny-Huge Island course lies a line of just four coins. That’s unlike the rest of the game’s rows of five coins, writes pannenkoek12 (on his second account, UncommentatedPannen). The reason for this? The invisible fifth coin spawns and gets stuck approximately "49 units below the ground."

A titan even Manfred von Richthofen could love

With the release of Titanfall 2 just days away, EA has announced an exclusive skin available only to players of Battlefield 1.

The Titanfall Twitter account announced a Red Baron-styled skin late last week. It marks titans in the classic red and white scheme that German ace Manfred Von Richthofen applied to his Fokker Dr.I triplane.
