Microsoft’s headsets aim to 'democratize mixed reality'

Affordable mixed reality headsets, devices that can deliver anything from a virtual reality game to an augmented view of your living room, are a major reason behind Microsoft's investment in HoloLens, said Alex Kipman, who heads up the project at Microsoft.

Starting next year, Windows 10-powered devices from an array of third-party manufacturers will begin hitting retailers for as little as $299 and, just as importantly, you won't need a powerful computer to use them.

Kipman says that while there is a lot of "amazing innovation" happening on the PC around virtual reality, the technology still has two major problems.

J.J. Abrams is reportedly working on another secret Cloverfield movie

He wants to release one a year

In January, J.J. Abrams’ production company Bad Robot released a surprise teaser trailer for a film called 10 Cloverfield Lane. The movie was the quasi-sequel to the 2008 sci-fi film, Cloverfield, and Abrams hinted that it wasn’t going to be the last movie in the Cloverfield universe.

The Wrap is now reporting that Bad Robot’s next movie being produced by Abrams, God Particle, is the third movie in the Cloverfield franchise. According to The Wrap’s “insider familiar with the project,” Abrams and studio partner Paramount Pictures want to develop and release a new Cloverfield movie every year for the foreseeable future. Based on the report, it appears the Abrams and his team are focused on creating a new cinematic universe based on the one thing connecting each film: aliens.

Pokémon Sun and Moon brings back some of the most beloved Pokémon masters

Introducing the Battle Tree

Pokémon Sun and Moon are filled with throwbacks to the original generation of games, as we’ve seen with the various Alola region variants of familiar monsters. A feature at the end of the game, introduced in the games’ latest video, drives the nostalgic angle even harder, giving fans a chance to compete alongside their idols.

The Battle Tree is a special location reserved for Alolan trainers who have finished up all of the Island Challenge Trials, which replace the gyms of old. The strongest Pokémon champions from across the land gather there to do battle, but the goal goes beyond simple victory. Players can recruit fellow trainers to fight with them in future matches once they’ve proven themselves worthy — and considering they’ll be fighting against heroes like Red from the original Pokémon games, that’s a tall order.

Pokémon Sun and Moon's final starter evolutions officially unveiled in new trailer

Plus tons of other new monsters and an intro to the Alolan Pokémon League

Pokémon Sun and Moon's entire Pokédex was leaked upon the release of its demo earlier this month, but it wasn't until now that the names and types of the starter Pokémon's final evolutions were revealed. A new trailer released Thursday morning formally introduces us to Deicdueye, Incineroar and Primarina, as well as several other new Pokémon we've seen but not been properly acquainted with before.

Decidueye is the final evolution of Rowlet, the grass-type starter; it's a grass/dark-type. Incineroar evolves from the tiny Litten, and fans may be elated upon hearing it's a fire/dark-type, not part-fighting as previously hypothesized. Popplio's evolutionary line ends with Primarina, a water/fairy-type.

Raging Boll will rage no more

He’s finally stopped.

There was a time when German-born director Uwe Boll and video game movies were synonymous. Boll was infamously attached to the notion that you couldn’t turn a video game into a good movie.

Nintendo Switch event to reveal further details in mid-January

Price, release date, games and more

Nintendo isn’t going to tell us more about the Nintendo Switch until 2017, but we won’t have to wait long once the new year begins. Tatsumi Kimishima, president of Nintendo, said during an analyst meeting Oct. 27 that the company will hold a mid-January press event called Nintendo Switch Presentation 2017 to announce details such as the console’s price and release date.

Nintendo Switch Presentation 2017 will be held in Tokyo for an audience of trade partners, financial analysts and the media. While Nintendo did not announce the exact time of the event, the company did say that it will livestream the presentation globally, and that it will take place “Jan. 12, U.S. time.” Considering the time difference between the U.S. and Japan, that could mean the event will occur in the wee hours of the morning Tokyo time.
