The Last of Us PS4 has been patched with HDR support, and it looks great

My eyes! The goggles do nothing!

The Last of Us Remastered developer Naughty Dog patched the game last night to add support for the PlayStation 4 Pro and high dynamic range (HDR) color, nine days ahead of the console’s launch.

The update, which brings The Last of Us on PS4 to version 1.07, also adds "improved quality of stereo audio," according to the patch notes; you can see a screencap below. Naughty Dog showed off both The Last of Us Remastered and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End on the PS4 Pro, in HDR, during the console’s reveal event in early September. Uncharted 4 has not yet been updated with support for HDR or the PS4 Pro.

It makes perfect sense

Ben Throop was a game director at Activision and, soon after he left that position to work on his own projects, he attended a game jam in 2014 that included this interesting tethered virtual reality headset that included head tracking. It was called the Vive.

He immediately began to think about using his head to aim soccer balls, using natural motions. It only took a few days of creating passable physics before he realized the idea had merit.

Nobody ever expects Croagunk

Pokkén Tournament, the Pokémon-meets-Tekken arcade fighting game, is adding another Pokémon to its roster on Nov. 10: Croagunk, the little-loved poison frog who’s already present in the game as a support character. It’s a disappointing reveal for some Pokémon fans, especially those who scoured the game’s files and found a different character who appeared to be on its way instead.

Dataminers looked through the files of a version update released back in July, finding several names that suggested a set of new fighters. There were files with Pokédex numbers matching Scizor, the most recently revealed Pokkén combatant; Darkrai, who arrived earlier this year; and Empoleon, the popular, evolved form of water-type starter Piplup.

Animal Crossing gets its own Nintendo Direct tomorrow

Don’t look for mobile news, though

Nintendo announced on Twitter that it would air a special Animal Crossing presentation tomorrow, Nov. 2. The Nintendo Direct broadcasts will kick off at 10 a.m. ET, but fans of the small-town life simulators worldwide shouldn’t expect any big news when it comes to the upcoming Animal Crossing mobile game — or its next console, the Switch.

Instead, Nintendo is limiting the news to Animal Crossing: New Leaf’s recent updates. A patch for the Nintendo 3DS game adds amiibo support this fall, introducing both amiibo card and figure functionality to players’ villages. Both Animal Crossing and other Nintendo-related amiibo will unlock new content for the game, like furniture and clothing.

Two Zero Escape games are coming to PS4 and Vita next year

Welcome ... to the 2017 Nonary Games!

The first two games in Spike Chunsoft’s Zero Escape series — Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors and Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward — are coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita early next year as part of a package deal. Aksys will release the two adventure games as Zero Escape: The Nonary Games in spring 2017, the publisher announced today.

The re-release of Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (aka 999) is more than just a port, Aksys says. The 2009 game has been “rebuilt from the ground up and now features HD graphics, as well as English and Japanese voice acting.”

Maybe public transportation isn’t the best place to work on secret documents

A sharp-eyed metro rider may have unearthed the title of the next Tomb Raider game after spotting it on an open laptop on a Montreal train.

Reddit user Tripleh280 snapped a picture of a presentation on a MacBook screen, with Shadow of the Tomb Raider somewhat visible in the right corner. The caption on Reddit reads, “Saw someone working on a presentation for ‘Shadow of the Tomb Raider’ on the subway (Possible new game?)”

From R-rated Deadpool to family-friendly Sonic

Sony Pictures has hired Deadpool director Tim Miller to serve as an executive producer on the company’s upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Miller will partner with Jeff Fowler on the project; it would be Fowler’s directorial debut. The two have worked together at visual effects and animation house Blur Studio, which Miller co-founded, for more than a decade. They teamed up on “Gopher Broke,” a 2004 short film from Blur that was nominated for an Academy Award; Fowler wrote and directed, while Miller produced.
