YouTube adds support for HDR videos

YouTube is enabling support for high-dynamic-range (HDR) color in its videos today, just a few days ahead of the release of the PlayStation 4 Pro, the company announced today.

Users will be able to stream HDR content as long as they have displays that support the enhanced color technology. YouTube has supported 4K video for quite some time, but HDR is a new addition to the platform. Those with HDR-capable televisions and the new Chromecast Ultra, for example, or those who have a computer hooked up to an HDR-enabled monitor will be the first wave of users who can stream YouTube videos with an increase in clarity, color and contrast.

Final Fantasy 15’s next spinoff is a mobile MMO

The number of Final Fantasy 15 spinoff content has increased, as Square Enix announced a partnership with mobile game developer Machine Zone to bring a title based on the Final Fantasy 15 universe to mobile devices. It’s not just another free-to-play game, however: Machine Zone is working on a massively multiplayer adventure for smartphones.

How this will work, exactly, has not yet been detailed, but Machine Zone promised that the characters, soundtrack and storyline of the upcoming Final Fantasy epic will resurface for the MMO. The developer cited its original free-to-play titles, like the popular Game of War: Fire Age, as inspiration for how Final Fantasy 15 will work as a mobile MMO.

Game of War: Fire Age lets players embark upon quests, with PvP, PvE and resource-farming missions available to play together. There are also text-based chat options to connect players in real time. Whether the real-time Final Fantasy 15 MMO follows that model will be detailed at a later date.

Mass Effect’s Andromeda Initiative welcome video offers even more new details

BioWare just released a brand new trailer for its highly anticipated continuation of the Mass Effect franchise, Mass Effect: Andromeda. But there are even more revealing details to be found in the welcome video for the Andromeda Initiative: the developer’s in-fiction homepage for hopeful space explorers looking to gear up for 600 years of cryosleep on a journey to another galaxy.

The bulk of that welcome briefing is the above video, introduced and narrated by Jien Garson, who calls herself the founder of the Andromeda Initiative. But if users sign into the site with their Origin Accounts, they are able to access additional pockets of information about the Initiative, the planets it expects to explore in the Heleus Cluster of the Andromeda galaxy, and the "Pathfinder," a person who is a "blend of elite soldier, scientist, and guide" who’ll be leading humanity’s efforts.

Mass Effect: Andromeda voice cast revealed

Mass Effect: Andromeda picks up the story of the universe centuries after the events of the series’ original trilogy, so it focuses on a new cast of characters: the Ryder family. Game Informer has the details on the voice actors behind the trio of Ryders at the heart of the game’s story.

At the beginning of Mass Effect: Andromeda, players will choose one of the Ryder twins to play as: either Scott Ryder or Sarah Ryder. This is a departure from the previous three games in the franchise, in which the protagonist was the same fundamental character, regardless of whether the player decided to go with a male or female Commander Shepard.

The Division’s new Survival mode now live for PC testers

The next expansion for Tom Clancy’s The Division, “Survival,” is now available for Windows PC players to try out on the public test server. The eponymous new mode promises an even more intense version of the popular third-person shooter, as shown during its livestream reveal Monday morning: If you fail to survive, it’s game over.

Twenty-four players take part in the mode, which is set in the frozen tundra of a wintery New York City. There’s both PvP and PvE, with the latter allowing players to help each other in the quest to withstand the snowstorm. That’s in part because the toughest enemies in Survival mode aren’t other people, but the player’s own body. Characters are sick and starving and must ward off their illness while moving across the map.

Mass Effect 2 and 3 now playable on Xbox One

Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 are now compatible with Xbox One, making the entire original trilogy playable on Microsoft’s current hardware. Both games are available today in celebration of N7 Day, a “holiday” recognized by series fans every Nov. 7.

Both Mass Effect sequels were long thought unplayable on Xbox One, due to its backward compatibility feature not allowing for multi-disc titles upon its initial release. Following an update that brought the dual-disc Deus Ex: Human Revolution — Director’s Cut to Xbox One, however, Microsoft confirmed that it had figured out how to make games stretched across more than one disc work with the console.

Why VR arcades could be virtual reality’s salvation

While different forms of VR arcades have been around since the late ‘90s, it hasn’t been until recently that new virtual reality gaming centers have been gaining massive popularity around the world, first in China, then in other parts of Asia and soon widespread in Europe and North America.

Earlier this week, the senior vice president of HTC’s virtual reality efforts announced initiatives meant to make it easier for people to open these arcades as small businesses. He also told Polygon that the company is considering opening two more arcade test facilities of its own. The company opened Viveland, a VR arcade in Taipei, last week. He said the company is likely to open Vivelands in Europe and the U.S. as well.
