Yooka-Laylee launching in April, Wii U version canceled

Yooka-Laylee, the spiritual successor to colorful 3D platformers like Banjo-Kazooie, made by alumni of the original series, will launch on April 11, 2017.

The Wii U version, which had been part of Yooka-Laylee's crowdfunding promises since its Kickstarter began in May 2015, is formally canceled. This isn't much of a surprise as Nintendo's newest console, the Switch, is due to launch sometime before the game's release date.

Pokémon Sun and Moon’s first global mission was a massive failure

Pokémon Sun and Moon’s inaugural global mission wrapped early on Dec. 13, and the results are in: Trainers didn’t meet the goal of catching 100 million Pokémon. Turns out they didn’t even come close.

The English-language Pokémon Global Link website updated with a conciliatory message, informing participants in the online contest that they had “just missed” the 100 million mark. The English version of the post neglects to mention by how much they missed it, however; thankfully, the Japanese site fills in the blanks.

Report: EA’s exclusive deal with Porsche ends this year

Electronic Arts' long-running exclusive license to use Porsche vehicles in its Need For Speed and Real Racing series is coming to an end, according to comments attributed to a Porsche executive in a report published yesterday.

The German-language site Speed Maniacs, speaking to Italian racing developer Kunos Simulazioni, asked how the studio was able to get a license to Porsche for Assetto Corsa, which launched in August. According to Sebastian Hornung, the branded entertainment manager for Porsche, the license "runs out this year" and that Porsche and EA had a mutual parting of ways (translation by GT Planet).

‘Death Star’ destroyed during the largest battle in Eve Online history

More than 5,700 players gathered over the weekend to destroy a massive player-made structure in Eve Online, making it the single largest engagement in the game’s history. It’s evidence that the MMO, now in its 14th year, is undergoing a kind of renaissance brought on by the recent “world war” and a move to allow free-to-play accounts.

Over the weekend one of Eve’s most successful mercenary factions, called Pandemic Legion, concluded a months-long assault on a region of space controlled by another in-game faction, known as Circle of Two (CO2). Their main objective was the destruction of a Keepstar citadel, a tremendously expensive player-built defensive position that was introduced in Eve’s April update.

This arcade hockey game is going back to the violent 1970s

Hockey isn’t the same sport it was 40 years ago. You could certainly say the same for the other three major professional sports in North America, but here’s some perspective: It wasn’t until the 1979-80 season that the NHL mandated the use of helmets for all incoming players, and thanks to a grandfather clause, there was still one person playing without headgear as recently as 1997.

Everyone’s hair flows freely in Old Time Hockey, an upcoming arcade sports title that is more nostalgia-focused than any modern 16-bit side-scroller. Vancouver-based developer V7 Entertainment’s motto might as well be “they don’t make ’em like they used to” — both for the kind of video game that Old Time Hockey is, and for the take on hockey that it’s aiming to deliver.

New, gen two Pokémon are making their way to Pokémon Go right now

Pokémon beyond the original 151 can now be found in Pokémon Go, announced developer Niantic and The Pokémon Company today. Baby Pokémon like Pichu and Togepi, who made their debut in Pokémon Gold and Silver, will now pop up in the hugely popular mobile game.

Players won’t be able to catch them in the wild like the average Pokémon, however. Instead, they’ll have to visit PokéStops to collect Pokémon eggs, which may include one of the new finds when they hatch.

These are Pokémon Go’s gen two monsters to look out for

Pokémon Go’s most exciting update ever launched today, heralding the arrival of the second generation of Pokémon. Although most players expected the game to receive all 100 of gen two’s monsters, it turns out that we’re only getting a few.

Niantic and The Pokémon Company are playing coy about the majority of new Pokémon that players can hatch from eggs, but there’s a pretty big hint. The pair did mention Pichu and Togepi as two of the Pokémon players can now add to their Pokédex, pointing to a theme with the update: baby Pokémon.
