First six Mega Man games coming to mobile next month

The first six entries in the Mega Man franchise — that’s all of the 8-bit titles in the original series — will be released on Android and iOS in early January, publisher Capcom announced today.

Here’s the full list of games, for the uninitiated: Mega Man (1987), Mega Man 2 (1988), Mega Man 3 (1990), Mega Man 4 (1991), Mega Man 5 (1992) and Mega Man 6 (1993). All of them debuted on the Nintendo Entertainment System. Capcom will sell each of the mobile ports for $1.99 on the App Store and Google Play, with the word “Mobile” appended to the titles. A Capcom Mobile representative told Polygon that the purchase price will cover each entire game; the titles will not offer microtransactions.

New Overwatch comic may have sunk your favorite ‘ships’

The latest in Overwatch’s holiday celebrations is “Reflections,” a comic that captures the game’s cast at some quieter, more intimate moments. While the heroes spend quality time with new and familiar faces, Overwatch fans are in mourning, as the short read appears to do away with many of their favorite, unofficial romantic pairings.

The most obvious relationship that figures into “Reflections” is that of Tracer, Overwatch’s de facto mascot, and the new character Emily. It’s our first confirmation of a queer character in the game’s cast, following developer Blizzard Entertainment’s repeated promises that it’d reveal one soon enough.

Pokémon Go players have walked enough to circle the Earth 200,000 times

Pokémon Go players have walked enough to circle the Earth 200,000 times

As we near 2016’s end, Pokémon Go developer Niantic is reflecting on just how far the game has come since its July launch — and how far its players have traveled. To collect some of the game’s most astounding data points, Niantic made the video above, showing off some wild stats from the past five months.

Chief among those wild Pokémon Go numbers is just how many kilometers players have walked while playing the game. As of Dec. 7, Niantic says that they’ve traveled 8.7 billion kilometers just by walking outside in the search for new Pokémon to catch. The developer put this another way, to convey just how far that is: That distance is comparable to more than 200,000 trips around the Earth.

2016 Steam Awards finalists go all the way back to 2006

The finalists for the first-ever Steam Awards are in, and it’s clear that the Steam community still loves plenty of older titles that may not have gotten their due back in the day.

Valve did not restrict the field of potential nominees to games that debuted in 2016. As such, the majority of nominated titles were released prior to this year, including veritable classics like 2011’s Portal 2 and more niche titles such as 2013’s Euro Truck Simulator 2.

Star Citizen dev says Crytek closures will have no impact on his game

Roberts Space Industries, the team behind the sprawling Star Citizen game project, tells Polygon they will not be affected by the studio closures at developer Crytek.

Star Citizen is being built with a heavily modified version of Crytek’s CryEngine product. In a press release issued today, Crytek announced a major restructuring of their operations. Five studios will be cast off in order to “refocus on its core strengths,” which include its CryEngine game engine.

Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons & Dragons Online live on with a new developer

It’s hard for any massively multiplayer game that’s not World of Warcraft to maintain momentum for five or six years, much less a decade. Yet The Lord of the Rings Online is coming up on its 10-year anniversary, and Dungeons & Dragons Online celebrated 10 years earlier this year. Both games were developed by Turbine, and both have been inching along with the support of publisher Warner Bros. Interactive.

Yesterday, both The Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons & Dragons Online received a surprising new lease on life, with Warner Bros. giving them a chance to continue with a new developer and publisher. As announced in an FAQ on The Lord of the Rings Online website, development of both games will now be handled by Standing Stone Games, “a newly-formed independent game studio made up of the same groups that have been working on LOTRO and DDO for years.”

Overwatch’s new comic confirms game’s first queer character

Overwatch’s latest comic, “Reflections,” went live today on the game’s website. Focused on speedy, pixie-like hero Tracer, it tells a warm holiday story featuring several of the Overwatch cast. But more exciting than just an expansion of the Overwatch universe’s lore is a reveal that fans have waited a long, long time for.

Tracer, as shown in the page below, is seen kissing another girl whom she appears to be living with. Emily is not one of Tracer’s fellow members of the Overwatch team, but it seems as though the two are dating; they later attend Overwatch hero Winston’s holiday dinner together.

Gravity Rush’s anime captures the game’s signature style

The sneak peek above at Gravity Rush the Animation ~Overture~ lasts only 30 seconds, but it’s long enough to get a good sense of just how pretty the anime adaptation of Gravity Rush will be.

The interstitial story — it’s set between 2012’s Gravity Rush and next January’s Gravity Rush 2 — will debut in advance of the second Gravity Rush installment, which is coming to PlayStation 4. Players of the first physics-defying action title, released on PlayStation Vita (and later PS4), will recognize characters like Kat and Raven, who star in the animation. It fills in their story following the cliffhanger that concludes Gravity Rush.

Xbox Games With Gold starts 2017 with Rayman Origins, Killer Instinct

In tumultuous times such as these, you can at least rely on a few sure things: The sun will rise in the east every morning, traveling during the holidays will be a nightmare, and Microsoft and Sony will offer free games to customers who subscribe to their respective online services. January 2017 will be no different, with Xbox Live Gold members getting access to four games as part of their subscription.

Xbox One owners will be able to download Neocore Games’ World of Van Helsing: Deathtrap (regularly $19.99) all month long, and the Ultra Edition of Iron Galaxy Studios’ Killer Instinct Season 2 (reg. $39.99) from Jan. 16 through Feb. 15.
