Contest offers $10K prize for a game about migration

Game-makers who care about immigration are being invited to enter a contest to design a game that addresses migrant and refugee movement, integration and xenophobic hostility.

A prize of $10,000 will be awarded to the winning entry, by organizer Games for Change and the Migration Policy Institute. Games for Change describes itself as "a movement and community of practice dedicated to using digital games for social change." The Migration Policy Institute is a Washington D.C.-based nonprofit dedicated to "analysis, development, and evaluation of migration and refugee policies at local, national, and international levels," according to its mission statement.

There was an easy way to beat this Super Mario World enemy all along

We’ve previously reported on Supper Mario Broth, one of Tumblr’s best and weirdest blogs. The site, which collects little-known Super Mario trivia, recently shared yet another fun fact, this time about Super Mario World. It turns out that there’s a trick that makes playing the Super Nintendo classic way easier, unbeknownst to many.

A post on Supper Mario Broth shows Mario taking down a Big Boo, one of the toughest enemies in Super Mario World, with one easy trick. Instead of jumping over the gigantic ghost, Mario simply slides down the stairs, knocking the ghoul right off its platform.

Wii U emulator cracks native 4K streaming, and it’s stunning

The newest version of Cemu, a popular, “highly experimental” Wii U emulator for Windows PC, includes a feature that many users have been hoping for. Available now to Patreon backers, version 1.7.0 supports customizable graphics, with graphics packs allowing players to adjust games’ resolutions to as high as 4K.

The team behind Cemu — the only current-gen console emulator out there — has long had trouble getting games to natively re-render at higher resolutions than the Wii U can. The console is capable of upscaling games to 1080p, while some of its library natively outputs at that resolution.

Watch Final Fantasy in four hours and other blistering speedruns today and tomorrow

Speedrunning festival Awesome Games Done Quick (AGDQ) is off to a great start, with more than $300,000 collected on behalf of the Prevent Cancer Foundation. Over the next two days we’ll see some tremendous runs, including rarely performed games such as Fallout: New Vegas and Katamari Damacy.

What is AGDQ? It’s the biannual celebration of speedrunning, the act of moving through a game as quickly as possible. Glitching, warping and bending the rules is all part of the fun, as is watching your favorite games turned inside out in hope of shaving a few more seconds off the world record.

Hacker publishes 1.5M users’ information after esports site refuses ransom demand

Personal information for more than 1.5 million accounts maintained by the E-Sports Entertainment Association was stolen and published online after the company refused the cyber-ransom demands of hackers, the ESEA confirmed yesterday.

ESEA has been updating its community in a timeline of events dating back to Dec. 27, and recommends that users change passwords and security questions in all other accounts where they used the same credentials. The information was published on Saturday, apparently after the ESEA refused a demand for $100,000.

Pokémon Sun and Moon’s second global mission is yet another failure

Pokémon Sun and Moon’s second global mission wrapped late on Jan. 9, and it turns out that players again missed the mark. Players did not meet the goal of scanning and capturing one million Pokémon in total, according to the Global Link website.

The online competition required players to use the “Island Scan” feature to locate and then battle Pokémon; afterward, they had to make sure to register their progress with the online Global Sync function. Had they been successful, players would have received 2,017 festival coins, the currency used in the online Festival Plaza that hosts these events. Instead, the consolation prize is a much more paltry 217 festival coins.
