Apex Legends’ new Arenas mode is a blend of tactical shooter and battle royale

Apex Legends is already one of the most popular battle royale games, but its new mode proves it can be a whole lot more than that. On Monday, developer Respawn Entertainment revealed Arenas, the first permanent Apex Legends mode to move outside the battle royale format.

Arenas takes all of the characters, weapons, and fantastic shooting mechanics from Apex Legends fans are used to and fits them into a package that feels a little bit like a tactical shooter. The mode pits two teams of three against each other in a round-based competition. The only way to win a round is to kill every member of the opposing team. Arenas matches take place on specifically designed maps, including a few that repurpose some of Apex Legends’ most popular locations.

New PlayStation State of Play coming April 29, focused on Ratchet & Clank

PlayStation will host a new State of Play livestream on Thursday, April 29, Sony announced in a blog post on Monday. Fans can watch along on PlayStation’s Twitch or YouTube channel at 5 p.m. EDT.

The new State of Play will focus on Ratchet & Clank, showing off more than 15 minutes of gameplay from the upcoming Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, which launches June 11. Sony just published a short gameplay trailer about Rivet, the character previously only known as “female Lombax.” Rivet may be a Lombax, like Ratchet, but she’s from an alternate dimension. She is a playable character in Rift Apart, along with the series’ titular heroes.

Ratchet & Clank’s new Lombax hero is Rivet, see her in action

Insomniac Games offered up new details on its upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, including the name of the game’s new Lombax character — it’s Rivet — and a first look at her in action. You can see Rivet and Clank (and Ratchet too!) in action in the gameplay trailer above.

Rivet hails from an alternate dimension where series antagonist Dr. Nefarious is not only successful in his evil schemes, he’s apparently attained the title of “emperor.” Rivet looks a lot like Ratchet in action, but has a few tricks of her own. She also looks like she’s borrowed some of Peter Parker and Miles Morales’ swinging tech from Insomniac’s Spider-Man games.

Fortnite’s transforming Neymar Jr. outfit finally has a release date

Neymar Jr. is finally making his way to Fortnite. The international soccer superstar will join the game on Tuesday, April 27, Epic announced on Sunday. But once he’s in Fortnite, Neymar Jr.’s more than just a soccer player, as his skin features a transformation into a football-playing mechanical jaguar.

Neymar’s Fortnite outfit is part of the game’s season 6 battle pass and will require players to complete a few challenges to unlock it. The challenges will go live when the skin arrives in the game. According to Epic’s post, the challenges will be given out as quests by soccer players around the Fortnite island. Competing a few of the quests will reward players with various cosmetic items like emotes and banners, but you’ll need to complete five to unlock the Neymar Jr. Outfit itself.

What to know about tonight’s (weird) Oscars

The 93rd Academy Awards are almost here. And this year might be the celebration’s strangest year yet.

This, of course, is because of the coronavirus pandemic. Throughout last year, movie theaters closed, the production timelines on many movies shifted, and numerous studios opted to push back their 2020 films into 2021 (and beyond). Because of the delays, the Academy chose to move back the entire award show by a few months to give more movies a chance to premiere. The organization didn’t release its full list of nominees until 13 months after last year’s ceremony.

For some, Wii Fit’s legacy is body shame

Nintendo wants to make exercise easy and fun. At least, that’s the message the company tries to broadcast through health-conscientious developments like step counters and memory games. The Wii, which got people off the couch and moving, was the perfect encapsulation of that ongoing concern with wellness. And Wii Fit, a video game ostensibly about health, was a logical progression of Nintendo’s fitness games. But sometimes, good intentions aren’t enough.

Captain America 4 is on the way, with showrunner from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

There’s a fourth Captain America film on the way, and Malcolm Spellman, the showrunner behind The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, is set to develop the next installment. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Spellman will be writing the script for the fourth Captain America film, alongside Dalan Musson, another staff writer for the Marvel and Disney Plus show.

Given that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier just wrapped up today, this should be welcome news for its fans. Starring Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson and Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, the show explored the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame, after Steve Rogers left Captain America’s shield to Sam and prompted him to take up the mantle. The after-credits scene in the show’s final episode hinted at something new to come, but we didn't know what it was quite yet. Now it’s looking like we’ll get a movie.

Destiny 2 fans already hate Bungie’s new armor Transmog system

Bungie finally revealed Destiny 2’s new armor Transmog system, which lets players turn one piece of armor into another visually without affecting its stats. The studio broke down how the system will work in its usual Thursday blog, ahead of the feature’s launch on May 11. But some of the system’s limitations, specifically a limitation that seems designed to milk more money from players, led to streamers and fans alike storming Twitter to offer their feedback.

The Transmog system — which Bungie also calls “armor synthesis” — brings Ada-1 back to the Tower. Ada and her Loom will help players unlock the appearances of items they’ve already earned, converting them to Universal Ornaments that Guardians can equip on any armor piece.

Returnal’s intense, unsettling first hours offer more risks than rewards

Despite having an infinite amount of lives to solve the mystery behind Returnal, many of the ones I’ve lost felt like the result of gambling at an unfair table.

Each death brings me back to where my journey began: alone, after crash-landing on an alien planet. To understand what’s going on and return to safety, I have to delve into the unknown, which leads to more death. Each new loop remixes the layout of the planet. No two lives end the same way.
