NES Classic Editions sold every two minutes on eBay after Nintendo pulled the plug

The NES Classic Edition has always been a hot commodity, but now that Nintendo’s discontinued the coveted hardware, shoppers are back to snapping them up as fast as possible.

On Thursday, April 13 — the day that Nintendo announced that the $60 plug-and-play console was no longer in production — eBay members purchased NES Classic Edition units at a rate of two per minute. A representative for the third-party auction site told Polygon that the going price that day was $332, or nearly six times the suggested retail price.

While thousands of fans were tramping around this year’s Star Wars Celebration, ABC News was busy behind closed doors getting the inside scoop on Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Thanks to a short segment that aired over the weekend, we finally know who the last Jedi actually is. And, according to director Rian Johnson, it’s a simple matter of semantics.

In an exclusive sit-down interview with members of the cast and crew, ABC’s Paula Faris finally cornered Johnson on the issue of who precisely is the last Jedi.

Good news: Grand Theft Auto 5 is being used to train driverless cars

If you've ever happened upon a dozen cars immobilized by pure gridlock in a Grand Theft Auto 5 intersection and thought, "Now this is the kind of driver AI we need more of!" I have good news for you: The game is being used to teach cars how to drive themselves.

That's according to this story from Bloomberg, and, yes, researchers know how dubious it sounds at first. They quickly point out whatever data they're getting out of Grand Theft Auto 5 is supplementary to their work and not, like, the basis of their software. Which is great, because no one wants this in real life:

Steam has a massive new competitor

Chinese megacorporation Tencent is refreshing its flagship games platform. The new service, dubbed “WeGame,” will support international users and could give the gaming world its first true competitor to Steam.

The news broke on Twitter over the weekend thanks to Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad. According to his translation, one of the slides on the Tencent splash page indicates that WeGame will “support both Chinese and global users” through a single storefront. That’s significant, because TGP already has more users, some 200 million according to Ahmad, than Steam, which at last count had more than 125 million.

Telltale’s Guardians of the Galaxy arrives tomorrow, watch the launch trailer

Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series will send the titular heroes on a path toward a confrontation with the “literal murderizing machine” known as Thanos, if the game’s launch trailer is anything to go by.

The first episode, which launches tomorrow, April 18, is called “Tangled Up in Blue.” The name comes from a 1975 Bob Dylan song; the Guardians of the Galaxy film and its upcoming sequel — which are unrelated to Telltale’s video game series — are famous for their use of popular music from the 1970s and ’80s.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 season pass remarks cause a stir

Star Wars Battlefront 2 got its official reveal yesterday, and then Mashable jolted gamers awake when it reported comments from an EA DICE developer that suggested the game would not sell a season pass of premium DLC. This is the latest red-line promise in a game’s hype cycle that rallies gamers to its flag. And those comments were almost immediately walked back by Electronic Arts PR.

Ordinarily, this contradiction would be little more than inside baseball for the world of video games writing, but for a property such as Star Wars, a publicly traded company such as Electronic Arts, and a format such as a multiplayer shooter, just the suggestion there might be no season pass deserved to be treated as front-page news, and it was.
