NES Classic discontinued because ‘we don’t have unlimited resources,’ Nintendo says

Nintendo’s decision to end production of the NES Classic Edition was baffling to just about everyone, even as people tried to come up with reasons to explain it. Now the company says that it doesn’t have the bandwidth to continue manufacturing the diminutive retro console.

“From our perspective, it’s important to recognize where our future is and the key areas that we need to drive,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, president and chief operating officer of Nintendo of America, in an interview with Time. “We’ve got a lot going on right now and we don’t have unlimited resources.”

Reminder: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe — and any Switch game — has free online for a limited time

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is out today, and it provides one of the Nintendo Switch’s most robust online multiplayer experiences yet. It’s easy enough to hop into an online race or battle right now, but later this year, playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe — and every Switch game — online will become more complicated.

The reason for that is a matter of cost. Right now, playing games like Super Bomberman R, Puyo Puyo Tetris and the new Mario Kart 8 Deluxe online costs the glorious price of free. But Nintendo hasn’t been shy about its upcoming, premium Switch online service. The company plans to launch it sometime this fall, at which point it will require all Switch owners to pay an annual subscription fee in order to use any online multiplayer features.

Amazon’s Mario Kart 8 Deluxe deliveries delayed for some pre-order customers

Amazon offers a 20 percent savings for Prime members who pre-order games or purchase them within two weeks of launch, but the retail giant is having issues fulfilling its Mario Kart 8 Deluxe pre-orders.

The delivery of my own copy of the game was delayed until tomorrow, and other fans have reached out through our tip line and social media accounts to complain of the same issue. I reached out to Amazon support to see what had happened.

Fire Emblem Heroes just played its fanbase with its best event yet

Fire Emblem Heroes’ moneymaking gimmick has never been more clear than today, with the release of its latest character-collecting event. Four of the game’s most powerful, coveted heroes are finally easily obtainable — days after the long-awaited release of Ike, the most popular Fire Emblem character, who is both not as strong and not as easy to collect.

Takumi, Hector, Azura and Ryoma are the starring heroes of the new event, which is dubbed “Hero Fest.” Although players must still spend their in-game money in the hopes of grabbing any of these characters at random, the odds to win them are the best they ever have been in the grab bag-style game.

Arms’ newest fighter is a disgusting, sensual green blob

The cast of Nintendo Switch fighting game Arms is stuffed with cute, cleverly designed characters. From the adorable Ribbon Girl to the shuriken-man-bunned Ninjara, there’s a lot to love in the colorful cast. And then there’s Helix, the Voldo of Arms.

Helix — named DNA Man in Japan — is a pulsating, green blob with DNA strand-like arms. He’s armed with throbbing fists of blue goo. He’s the terrifying amalgamation of an inflatable wavy tube man and Flubber. And we can’t wait to play as this horrific, man-made monster.

PS4 shipments reach 60 million units worldwide

Sony’s latest sales numbers for the PlayStation 4 bring the console up to 60 million units shipped worldwide, the company announced today.

The figure of 60 million consoles represents PS4 shipments to retailers — not sales through to customers — from the console’s launch in November 2013 through March 2017, the end of Sony’s 2016 fiscal year. That includes 2.9 million PS4s shipped during the fourth fiscal quarter (January to March 2017), which was up 26 percent over the 2.3 million consoles shipped during the same period a year ago.

Japan’s already getting hot, exclusive New 2DS XL systems

The West’s lack of love for the Dragon Quest franchise rarely has much of an effect on our daily lives. Today, that is far from the case, because there’s some sleek as hell Dragon Quest-branded consoles on their way that Western fans will likely never get a chance to buy.

Nintendo only revealed its new Nintendo 3DS form factor — the New Nintendo 2DS XL, a larger revision of the 3D-less Nintendo 2DS system — last night, but Square Enix already has a limited edition version in the pipeline. Launching July 29 in tandem with Dragon Quest 11 on Nintendo 3DS, this black-and-silver handheld has a metallic Slime on its face.

Once again, Nintendo will not hold a traditional press briefing onstage during E3, the company announced today.

“We will not be hosting a large-scale press conference for institutional investors, analysts and the media,” Tatsumi Kimishima, president of Nintendo, said today during a briefing to discuss the company’s financial results for its 2016-17 fiscal year. Kimishima added that Nintendo of America will provide details “at a later date” on how Nintendo will handle E3.

New Nintendo 2DS XL coming this July

Nintendo is expanding its array of handheld gaming devices this summer with the New Nintendo 2DS XL, a larger version of the kid-friendly 2DS, the company announced today.

In the U.S., the New 2DS XL will be available in a black/turquoise color scheme for $149.99 starting July 28. That’s the same day as two of Nintendo’s big summer games for the 3DS family: Miitopia, a role-playing game starring Miis, and Hey! Pikmin. Nintendo announced the July 28 date today for Miitopia, and two weeks ago for Hey! Pikmin.
