Call of Duty: WWII will highlight the vulnerability of its heroes

The surf is pink, or maybe magenta. A few dead boys float on the waves, in and out, like a melody. I wonder at the cost of all their gear, their training and their getting here, from Kansas and California and Connecticut, all so they could jump out of a transport, take a slug and float with the stillness of starfish.

The Reich’s bullets make pretty little pings on the surface of the sea. My character is not one of those who is slain before touching France. That would make for a very poor game. He’s protected by the privilege of being my avatar.

PlayStation Plus games for May include Abzu, Tales from the Borderlands

PlayStation Plus subscribers will get two terrific PlayStation 4 games in May: Abzu and Tales from the Borderlands.

Giant Squid’s Abzu, which debuted in August 2016 on PS4 and Windows PC, is a gorgeous undersea adventure in which the player steps into the flippers of a diver and swims with a wide variety of marine life. Tales from the Borderlands is a hilarious episodic adventure game from Telltale Games that’s based on Gearbox Software’s Borderlands franchise, and it’s perhaps the most underrated title in Telltale’s library.

Burnout creators spin off Crash Mode into its own game, Danger Zone

Danger Zone is the next project from the co-founders of the studio that created the Burnout franchise, and it’s a game based on the beloved Crash Mode in that series, developer Three Fields Entertainment announced today.

This will be the third game from Three Fields Entertainment, which was started in 2014 by Criterion Games co-founders Fiona Ward and Alex Sperry. Three Fields released its first two games last year — Dangerous Golf in June, and Lethal VR in November — and both of them received lukewarm reviews. The golf game appeared to be at least partly inspired by Crash Mode, but Three Fields is being explicit about the connection this time around.

Call of Duty: WWII is the ‘right game at the right time’

“I don't know why that happens like that but it always seems to happen like that,” Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg explained, recognizing a trend. “We're all plugged into the same cultural rhythms to a certain extent. Specifically to us, three years ago when we greenlit this thing, we definitely just thought it was time to take the franchise back to its roots.”

With news that Call of Duty is returning to its origins with the recently confirmed Call of Duty: WWII, Hirshberg spoke with Polygon in advance of the game’s reveal tomorrow about why it was time to return to World War II, where the Call of Duty franchise is at and the tension between being consistent and keeping the series fresh.

Heroes of the Storm is having another Overwatch-themed event

Blizzard Entertainment is making another appeal to Overwatch players — of which there are more than 25 million — to check out Heroes of the Storm, the company’s cross-franchise action strategy game. A new event, Nexus Challenge 2.0, will give Overwatch players an enticing new skin called Officer D.Va if they play some Heroes of the Storm with friends.

The Officer D.Va skin reimagines the young Overwatch pilot as a Korean cop, complete with a police cruiser-themed makeover for her mech. Overwatch players can also earn some icons and sprays based on Officer D.Va if they play enough Heroes of the Storm.
