Valve writer, VR evangelist Chet Faliszek leaves company

Chet Faliszek, a 12-year veteran of Valve who helped define the developer’s humor and writing style, has left the company, according to a report from GamesIndustry.biz.

Faliszek’s work includes writing on the two Half-Life 2 episodes, and the Portal and Left 4 Dead games. In recent years, Faliszek has served as something of an evangelist for Valve’s virtual reality efforts, working with outside developers and advocating for the gameplay and storytelling potential of the nascent technology.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s first DLC pack sounds really neat

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s first add-on will throw rooms full of baddies at Link, make enemies a lot tougher, and track his footsteps across Hyrule, publisher Nintendo announced today.

Known as The Master Trials, the downloadable content pack is the first of two planned add-ons for Breath of the Wild. It is scheduled to be released this summer, while the second DLC is slated to arrive this holiday season. They are only available to buy together in Breath of the Wild’s $19.99 Expansion Pass.

Overwatch’s cutest voice line was a recording booth accident

One of the most beloved voice lines in Overwatch wasn’t scripted. During the first Tribeca Games Festival this weekend, senior game designer Michael Chu took credit for putting Mei’s rapid-fire string of apologies into the game, after a recording booth mistake was caught on tape.

“The actress [Zhang Yu] just made a mistake and was saying ‘Sorry, sorry, sorry,’” Chu told the crowd at Tribeca Games Festival, when asked what his favorite voice line in Overwatch was. “And I turned to the engineer and asked, ‘Did you get that?’ And he was like, ‘Yep,’ and I was like, ‘Send that to me.’”

Pokémon Stars rumors fly after new merch seems to drop a hint

The Japanese Pokémon Center is adding a new line of merchandise inspired by Cosmog, one of the starring legendary monsters in Pokémon Sun and Moon. The “Look Upon the Stars” collection is a perfect fit for the starry-eyed Pokémon — but many fans also see it as an obvious nod toward the rumored Pokémon Stars, the 3DS games’ follow-up.

Pokémon Stars first entered the lexicon in November, right around Sun and Moon’s launch. Eurogamer reported that a director’s cut version of the 3DS games by that name would be heading to Nintendo Switch sometime in 2017. We have neither seen nor heard anything more about the rumored project since then, but fans are taking the series of Pokémon items inspired by the stars (get it?) as a telltale sign.

Hearthstone celebrates 70 million player milestone with free pack giveaway

Just over a year ago, Blizzard announced that its digital card game Hearthstone had reached a massive audience of 50 million total players around the world. We haven’t heard an update on numbers since then, which left some wondering if the player base was still growing. As it turns out, yes, it very much is.

Today Blizzard announced that the Hearthstone community has ballooned another 20 million since last year, totaling over 70 million players. The publisher also noted that when the Journey to Un’Goro expansion launched in early April, the game experienced more players logged in on the same day than at any previous point in its history. That explains the server problems!

Copyright claim yanks fan-made Breath of the Wild 2D adaptation

To no one's surprise, the fan-made adaptation of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild based on a 2D prototype of the game has been taken down on a copyright claim by Nintendo of America.

"Breath of the NES," a free game for Windows PC, drew its inspiration from a 2D test game, shown at GDC 2017, which resembled the original Legend of Zelda from 1987. The internal-only prototype was meant to test open-world gameplay concepts and also reinforce for designers the idea of returning the series to its roots.

How the Nintendo Switch's HD rumble makes Tumbleseed feel real

I was delighted the first time I played Tumbleseed on the Nintendo Switch.

You play the game by raising or lowering both sides of a screen-length, horizontal bar with the system’s two analog sticks, and and you can feel every roll of your little seed. When that seed picks up speed before banging into a wall — which probably means you lost control — it feels almost as if there are physical objects rolling around inside the system, especially if you’re playing portable mode. It’s a game that values small movements and precision, and that is telegraphed through those rumbles.

Kingdom Hearts speedrunner suffers a crushing defeat

Despite experiencing the absolute worst thing that can happen to someone playing a lengthy role-playing game live on Twitch, streamer Bl00dyBizkitz handles this botched Kingdom Hearts 2 speedrun remarkably well.

Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix on PlayStation 4 is known to have the occasional glitch, including one that can cause the game to crash at the most inopportune moments. This is the perfect example of one: Bl00dyBizkitz nearly got to the nine-hour mark of his Kingdom Hearts 2 playthrough when he finally went to go save his game.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sets record as fastest-selling game in the franchise

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold nearly half a million copies stateside when it went on sale last Friday, making it the fastest-selling Mario Kart title ever.

Nintendo announced that the game beat out Mario Kart Wii as the series’ fastest seller, with a little more than 459,000 copies sold in the U.S. on launch day alone. (The Switch has moved 2.7 million units worldwide since launch, for context.) Mario Kart Wii, which went on to be the best-selling entry of the Mario Kart series — and second-biggest Mario game ever — moved just under 434,000 copies at launch in 2008.
