Dota 2 co-op campaign included in The International 2017’s Battle Pass

The Battle Pass for The International 2017 — this is the content package that helps fund the multimillion-dollar prize pool for Dota 2's world championship in the summer — will include access to a co-operative campaign.

The Battle Pass went on sale two days ago and already has raised $5.8 million for The International's prize pool (a figure likely to be obsolete by the time this is read). The campaign is called Siltbreaker, billed as a two act journey "into the blackest depths of Dark Reef." Chapter one of Siltbreaker arrives later in May. Act 2 comes in July.

Despite the certainty of takedowns, fan developers still pursue Nintendo’s works

As soon as the first screenshot of it was shared, it seemed like "Breath of the NES" was doomed.

Made by WinterDrake, the nom de plume of a 20-year-old college student in Massachusetts, the game approximates a prototype shown at Game Developers Conference 2017 by Nintendo designers. They had begun work on this year’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with a 2D mockup that more resembled the original game in the series from 1987. Lots of people thought it was a cool and wanted to play it. WinterDrake did, too, so he set about to creating that.

The ‘Nintendo Play Station’ is working, thanks to Ben Heck

When Terry Diebold found the one-of-a-kind "Nintendo Play Station" in 2015 — this is the prototype console that Sony and Nintendo were collaborating on before famously parting ways in the early 1990s — it only played Super Nintendo cartridges . The CD-ROM drive, the prototype's distinguishing feature, didn't work.

Well, thanks to master modder/hacker Ben Heckendorn, that has been fixed. In his latest episode, Heckendorn goes deep inside the prototype's guts to diagnose the problem and get the CD-ROM drive working again.

Prey glitch breaks the game’s crafting system

Prey hasn’t even been out for a full day yet and already a pretty big glitch has been found. There’s an easy to use exploit that allows you to create unlimited resources and craft as much ammo and as many health kits as you can carry.

One of the very first YouTube videos to demonstrate the exploit comes from Random Chievo’s, but a more user-friendly video was created soon after by Captain Eggcellent. We’ve embedded it below.

Outlast 2 may be less frustrating thanks to a new patch

If you’ve read Polygon’s review of Outlast 2, you’ll know two things: first, that we rather liked the game despite being terrified all the time while playing it, and second, that it was extremely frustrating at certain moments. Developer Red Barrels has attempted to address that complaint in a patch released today.

In a post on Steam listing the patch notes, the developer said that Outlast 2 “has been a commercial success” but acknowledged that it has been watching feedback “from countless community members, let’s players, and reviews.” That feedback led the team to reconsider the level of challenge in the game.

NBA Playgrounds lacks some important features at launch

NBA Playgrounds, the NBA Jam-esque arcade basketball game from Saber Interactive, will eventually be the same game across the four platforms on which it is being released next week (Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One). But at launch, the Switch version will lag behind its counterparts in one major area: It will have no online play, a representative for Saber confirmed to Polygon.

Saber will patch in online functionality “a few days after launch,” the spokesperson said. The rep also confirmed that the Switch version will be playable with a single Joy-Con pad held sideways, and that Saber is targeting a frame rate of 60 frames per second on all four platforms. That applies on all PS4s; NBA Playgrounds does not offer any enhancements on a PS4 Pro.

Overwatch loot box probabilities revealed — at least for China

Chinese gaming regulations have forced Blizzard Entertainment to open up about what’s hiding inside Overwatch’s loot boxes. The company detailed the likelihood of players getting rare, epic and legendary items with every loot box they open — when playing the game in China, at least.

Blizzard posted the breakdown on the Chinese Overwatch site. Each loot box will contain at least one rare item, guaranteed. As for epic items, those are found in one if every 5.5 loot boxes, on average.

Speedrunner breaks Super Mario 64 world record in a landmark, emotional stream

Super Mario 64’s toughest speedrunning world record has been broken. Cheese05, a beloved member of the speedrunning community, managed to be the first in the world to collect all 120 stars in the game in under 100 minutes — a time that many previously thought was impossible.

Early this morning, May 5, Cheese played through the classic Nintendo 64 game live for a rapt Twitch audience. The world of Super Mario 64 speedrunning in particular is fiercely competitive, due to how much these playthroughs are based on memorization and extreme precision. This is especially true of the complete 120-star run, which may be the most difficult version of a Super Mario 64 speedrun to do. It requires that players collect every possible star in the game, and doing all of that in less than one hour, 40 minutes seemed unthinkable.
