Deadly Premonition is returning ... as a board game

Deadly Premonition, one of last generation’s strangest games, is making a comeback. Publisher Rising Star Games announced via a brief teaser that the 2010 game is now heading to tabletops, an odd fit for the survival horror.

How Deadly Premonition: The Board Game will play remains a mystery. The teaser hints at the return of both FBI agent Francis York, the game’s protagonist, and his unseen companion Zach. Beyond that, its barren website promises “a game of innocence, incrimination and murder,” alongside a countdown timer that appears to have another day left to go, at time of writing.

El Eco reports that under the deal, which the parties expect to sign later this month and which runs from now until 2020, the Argentine soccer legend will promote the game on Konami’s behalf.

Portal without portals makes for some weird, cool speedruns

A new way to play Portal, Valve’s influential puzzle-action game, is cropping up on the speedrunning scene, and the key is not using any portals at all.

Twitch streamer 097Aceofspades pioneered the portal-less speedrun last week with a nearly hourlong playthrough, which involved a Half-Life 2 cheat and zero uses of the portal gun. By conjuring up the speedy airboat vessels from Half-Life 2 using a quick cheat command, 097Aceofspades was able to navigate around all of Portal’s levels without ever using the game’s key weapon to properly solve puzzles.

Sonic the Hedgehog’s abandoned skateboarding game surfaces

Sonic the Hedgehog has always been a paragon of coolness — for better or worse —and in the early 2000s, skateboarding was the coolest sport around. It makes sense that Sonic would try his hand at the extreme sports genre, but footage unearthed by Unseen64 marks the first time we’ve ever seen the character’s failed attempt at a skateboarding game.

Sonic the Hedgehog Extreme “was originally developed without Sega’s consent,” according to Unseen64’s Liam Robertson. Vision Scape Interactive worked on a prototype of the game as a pitch to Sega sometime in the early 2000s. Conceived for Xbox, GameCube and PlayStation 2, Sonic Extreme never made it beyond this early pitch phase.

Dota 2 co-op campaign included in The International 2017’s Battle Pass

The Battle Pass for The International 2017 — this is the content package that helps fund the multimillion-dollar prize pool for Dota 2's world championship in the summer — will include access to a co-operative campaign.

The Battle Pass went on sale two days ago and already has raised $5.8 million for The International's prize pool (a figure likely to be obsolete by the time this is read). The campaign is called Siltbreaker, billed as a two act journey "into the blackest depths of Dark Reef." Chapter one of Siltbreaker arrives later in May. Act 2 comes in July.
