Far Cry 5 asks you to kill thy neighbor

Over the past few years of writing deeply about Ubisoft games, I’ve begun to notice a recurring theme. This publisher, and the studios within it, seems to possess an uncanny ability to anticipate modern cultural and political trends.

Take Watch Dogs, a game about my beloved city of Chicago and also about the modern surveillance state. It told a story wrapped around themes of government overreach that, at the time of its release, threatened to lap the game entirely. Later, with Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands, Ubisoft created a failed state overrun by a militarized strongman. Its centerpiece was a fictional Bolivia, but it just as easily could have been about any one of a half-dozen real-world countries.

Bungie clarifies Destiny 2’s server situation, says it ‘invested heavily’

Destiny 2’s debut last week got a mixed reception, but one thing that disappointed everybody was the confirmation from developer Bungie that the game will not use dedicated servers. In its weekly update today, the studio provided more details on Destiny 2’s network infrastructure, hoping to assuage players’ concerns and explain why the development team believes in the strategy it has chosen.

In short: It’s true that Destiny 2 won’t use dedicated servers, but the issue isn’t that simple, according to Bungie.

GTA Online’s Gunrunning update introduces arms trafficking

Weapons trafficking is coming to Grand Theft Auto Online in its next update, Gunrunning, publisher Rockstar Games announced today.

Gunrunning, which is scheduled for release in June for Grand Theft Auto 5, will focus on the illegal arms trafficking industry that has taken root in the southern part of San Andreas. You’ll have the option to buy bases beneath the ground in Blaine County via the in-game Maze Bank foreclosures website. At those subterranean headquarters, which are denoted on the surface by hatches, you’ll be able to set up shop and produce military vehicles and manufacture weapons. These massive bunkers will also feature gun ranges for target practice.

PAX-branded conventions expanding to China and elsewhere

The Penny Arcade Expo is continuing its international expansion, but not under the existing PAX name. Instead, Penny Arcade and ReedPOP — the firm behind pop culture conventions like PAX, New York Comic Con and Star Wars Celebration — are heading to China with GC Play, the first-ever “Powered by PAX” event, the companies announced today.

GC Play Powered by PAX will run from Nov. 10-12 at the Poly World Trade Center in Guangzhou, China. All events under the Powered by PAX banner will be overseen by the same teams that run the existing PAX conventions in North America and Australia. Those groups will work with organizations on the ground to ensure that each Powered by PAX event is suited to its local culture.

Of the entire Overwatch cast, Junkrat and Roadhog get along the best. It’s a pure and good friendship that makes them so beloved by fans, and it’s also core to who they are as characters — which is why the new Anniversary event’s little Easter egg featuring the dudes is so good.

Among the new loot in the Anniversary event are dance emotes. We’re pretty into them, and rightfully so; take a look at all of them in action:

The Pokémon anime just aired its most ridiculous episode yet

There have been plenty of silly Pokémon episodes throughout the years, but Pokémon Sun and Moon’s latest may best them all. The series’ 28th episode aired in Japan earlier today, and Twitter is having a field day over how weird it was.

The basic plot of the episode, according to fan site Pokémon Go Master’s recap, is that Ash’s Pokémon school in the Alola region is visited by a baseball master. Naturally, this leads to some extremely intense, Pokémon-infused ballgames.

Xbox One video store begins rolling out 4K HDR content

Microsoft has begun to add content that supports 4K resolution and high dynamic range (HDR) color to its digital video store on Xbox devices, the company confirmed to Polygon.

The store — which was formerly known as Xbox Video but is now called simply Movies & TV — does offer some 4K content already, mostly in the way of nonfiction extreme sports films. But The Lego Batman Movie, which hit digital video platforms earlier this month, is the first major motion picture to be available in 4K ultra HD on Microsoft’s store. And it appears to be the first Movies & TV title of any kind to support HDR.

What the new Pokémon mobile game gets so right about the series

There is finally a Pokémon game on smartphones that fans of the series absolutely have to play. Now on iOS and Android, Magikarp Jump is a smart, cute, endlessly entertaining game that truly gets the spirit of the handheld Pokémon role-playing games — all in one free-to-play, Magikarp-centric package.

Based on premise alone, Magikarp Jump seems like your run-of-the-mill mobile game. Players have a Magikarp on their team ... and it jumps. It doesn’t just jump for its own pleasure; it’s a competitive jumper who takes part in a variety of structured Magikarp jumping leagues. It’s up to players to train their Pokémon to be the very best at jumping that no other Magikarp ever was.
