Prey finally patched with actual PS4 Pro support

Prey developer Arkane Studios patched the game yesterday to add long-awaited support for the PlayStation 4 Pro, finally making an effort to live up to the billing on the box that indicates the game is a “PS4 Pro Enhanced” title.

The version 1.04 patch, which was released yesterday evening on PS4 and is coming to Windows PC and Xbox One later this week, delivers a suite of features that improve the look of Prey on the PS4 Pro. Enhancements include screen-space reflections, higher-quality shadows, 16x anisotropic filtering (up from 4x) and a general state of “improved visual fidelity.” You can check out the full list in the patch notes.

Final Fantasy 14 level boost and story skip costs as much as a full game

Final Fantasy 14 level boost and story skip costs as much as a full game

Four years into its life, one of the biggest criticisms against Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn is that it’s a very difficult game to catch up in. Leveling from 1 to the current level cap of 60 takes dozens of hours, and you also need to work through dozens of hours of post-level-cap story quest content. Before the first expansion, Heavensward, launched in 2015, I spent 30-plus hours at level 50 just finishing out the main plot so I could move along into the new story.

With the upcoming release of the MMO’s second expansion set, Stormblood, Square Enix is finally addressing this issue. Sort of.

A Nintendo Switch drops 1,000 feet and survives

We’ve chastised people before for not taking proper care of their Nintendo Switch consoles, but this durability test has left us speechless. The team behind the UnlockRiver.com YouTube channel dropped a Switch toward the ground from 1,000 feet in the air, a mortifying stunt that had surprising results.

This drop test has kind of a long lede, so we’ll cut to the chase: Starting around the two-minute mark, the UnlockRiver.com boys used a drone, a lot of tape and a strong cord to carry a Switch 1,000 feet above ground. Once the console got there, the drone dispatched the Switch back toward the concrete.

The Pokémon Company’s profits were up 26 times last year

The Pokémon Company made a huge amount of money during the most recent fiscal year, which shouldn’t surprise anyone. Pokémon Go and Pokémon Sun and Moon helped the company generate more than $143 million in profit for the year ending in February 2017 — a jump of more than 26 times its previous fiscal year.

Analyst Serkan Toto broke down the year-by-year profits for the private company, which has posted its earnings in Japan’s official government paper several times over the years.

Overwatch’s latest patch has big changes for Reaper, Roadhog and McCree

An update now live on Overwatch’s public test region does more than just add a new map to the game. Players on Windows PC can now also test out big changes to how Reaper, Roadhog and McCree play, as well as unlock two skins previously exclusive to Heroes of the Storm.

Two new legendary skins are in “classic loot boxes,” according to the PTR update’s patch notes. These are Oni Genji and Officer D.Va, two costumes that players could previously only get as rewards for completing an in-game Heroes of the Storm event.

Here’s Overwatch’s new moon base map, which is playable today

Overwatch is getting a new map called Horizon Lunar Colony. That map, which is playable in the game’s core quick play and competitive modes, is now available on Overwatch’s public testing region servers.

Players on Windows PC can opt in to the PTR and play Horizon Lunar Colony as of today. The Assault-type map ties in to Overwatch’s lore; the moon base was “built as a first step towards humanity's renewed exploration of space,” Blizzard said, with the goal of examining “the effects of prolonged extraterrestrial habitation—on human and ape alike.” The base was abandoned after the genetically modified gorillas who inhabited the lunar colony revolted against their human caretakers.

Rising Storm 2: Vietnam is terrifying

Rising Storm 2: Vietnam is terrifying

Rising Storm 2: Vietnam unlocked on Steam yesterday afternoon, and since then I’ve been putting some quality time into the game. Like its predecessors, it is an absolutely brutal experience that demands teamwork. Without a decent commander leading your side, expect to be utterly destroyed.

The game has a somewhat confusing history. The series began as Red Orchestra, a total conversion for Unreal Tournament 2003 set on World War II’s Eastern Front. The game eventually moved to Unreal Engine 3.0 and was released on Steam in 2006 as Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45. There, it became a cult classic. Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad followed in 2011, only to receive an upgrade called Rising Storm.

Gunheart brings Gears of War-style shooting to VR

In these early days of VR gaming, the first-person shooter’s journey to virtual reality has been a genuinely intriguing design challenge.

VR offers difficulties in coping with fast movement and quick reactions, especially in surround environments. The genre is not a natural transplant from PC screens, at least not yet.
