Nintendo still hasn’t decided whether the Switch will get a Virtual Console

Although Nintendo Switch will soon receive revamped retro games as part of its online service, the future of the Virtual Console, which carries Nintendo’s classic games library, remains uncertain. A company representative confirmed to Famitsu that it hasn’t settled on how to bring the Virtual Console to the Switch.

“Classic Games Selection (tentative name) is different from the [Virtual Console],” a spokesperson told the Japanese magazine. The spokesperson then added that Nintendo’s plans to sell the Virtual Console library are “still undecided.”

Let’s break down how Nintendo Switch Online works, alongside PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold. We’re looking at the most important elements, from pricing per year to exclusive game giveaways.

League of Legends is franchising, North American teams go for $10M

The North American League of Legends Championship Series (NA LCS) has, since its inception, featured a variable slate of teams. That changes this summer, as Riot Games has begun the process to convert to a franchise model.

Only a fixed number of NA LCS teams will have the opportunity to become permanent franchises, which must be purchased at a cost of $10 million. Exactly which teams are in and which are out will be determined with the help of “expert third parties.” Riot is looking for “stable, professional, well-funded and committed” organizations that are “committed to creating a rewarding environment for the pro players that work for them.”

Valve sets Steam Direct self-publishing fee at $100

Steam Direct, Valve’s upcoming replacement for Steam Greenlight, will require a fee of just $100 for developers to publish their games on Steam, the company announced today.

As previously announced, a developer will have to pay the fee for each game they want to release on Steam. This is different from the existing Steam Greenlight system, which allows developers to pay $100 once and publish as many titles as they want. However, Steam Direct’s $100 fee will be recoupable — Valve keeps the money only if a game’s revenue doesn’t exceed that amount.

Need for Speed Payback puts a Fast and Furious spin on the series

Need for Speed Payback is the next entry in the long-running racing franchise, and it will offer an “action driving fantasy” in a story told from multiple perspectives, publisher Electronic Arts announced today.

EA plans to release Need for Speed Payback, which is in development at Ghost Games, on Nov. 10 worldwide on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. It will be the first Need for Speed title since 2015 — when EA attempted to reboot the franchise with Need for Speed — and the third in a row from Ghost Games, following that game and 2013’s Need for Speed Rivals.

Total War: Warhammer 2 combines with the original to create a campaign twice as big

In the lobby of Sega’s offices in Santa Monica, California, I’m watching a massive dinosaur toss ranks of soldiers into the air like clods of dirt. These aren’t just any soldiers, however. These are High Elves, and in the lore of Total War: Warhammer 2, they’re supposedly the most disciplined, most highly-trained warriors around. But compared to a feral stegadon, one of the units in the new Lizardmen faction, they’re simply no match.

Warhammer 2 will feature four new races, including the High Elves, Dark Elves and Lizardmen, all drawn from the more than 30 years of lore that has built up around the Warhammer tabletop miniatures game. It will also include an entirely new map which, when combined with the map in the original Total War: Warhammer, will double the size of that game.

Prey’s latest patches cause issues on both PS4 and Xbox One

Prey’s latest patch may have finally introduced support for the PlayStation 4 Pro, but the update is a double-edged sword — especially for PS4 owners, according to a re-examination of the game by Digital Foundry.

Developer Arkane Studios released the version 1.04 patch earlier this week on Windows PC, where it is available as a beta update, and PS4. It doesn’t appear to have arrived on Xbox One yet; Arkane said it expects to set the patch live this week.

Look at the Archie Metroid comic that could have been

Metroid was once considered for the Archie Comics treatment. Steven Butler, best known for his work on the company’s Sonic the Hedgehog line, posted several pieces of concept art showing a Western-style take on Nintendo’s classic action franchise, which didn’t make it much farther.

“Some Metroid concept art done for Archie Comics about 6 or so years ago,” when they were wanting to do another licensed video-game comic,” Butler wrote on his public Facebook page. That would place these around the release of Metroid: Other M, which explains the characters seen in the illustrations.

Rime players crack DRM, just days after launch

Players have figured out how to get around Rime’s digital rights management protection in a matter of days. Turns out the DRM had a negative effect on Rime's performance, slowing down load times, according to those who cracked it. Now the onus is on developer, TequilaWorks, to remove the DRM tech entirely, as it initially promised.

Baldman, a member of the game-cracking hub Skidrow Games Reloaded, published the workaround earlier today. That’s just over five days from Rime’s release last week, tying it with Resident Evil 7 for the fastest Denuvo crack. It’s available as a free download for the game’s Windows PC version, and Baldman wrote that running the game without the Denuvo tech is actually recommended for players on PC.
