Overwatch is getting double XP this weekend

Blizzard Entertainment is giving Overwatch players a chance to earn loot boxes twice as fast beginning later this week. All players who log in from June 8-12 can earn double the experience while playing Overwatch on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One, the company announced today.

Overwatch’s double XP weekend will bring the game’s currently running Anniversary event to a close. It’s also an opportunity for players to — with any luck — earn more of the game’s newest, incredibly hard to get and highly coveted legendary skins.

Mass Effect: Andromeda patch expands romance options

Mass Effect: Andromeda's next patch will introduce another same-sex romance option for male protagonist Scott Ryder, delivering on BioWare's promise back in April to expand those choices.

Jaal, Ryder's squadmate, is now a potential romantic partner. At Mass Effect: Andromeda’s launch in late March, Scott Ryder's heterosexual romantic paths outnumbered the same-sex relationships, and none of the same-sex romantic partners were part of Ryder’s squad. The disparity had disappointed some fans of the series.

EA’s E3 2017 press conference: time and live stream

EA’s 2017 E3 press conference is taking place on Saturday, June 10 at 12 p.m. PDT / 3 p.m. EDT / 8 p.m. BST (When is that?). You can watch it live with us right here, at the top of this post.

We’re hoping to see some Star Wars Battlefront 2, and it’s possible EA will also announce Bioware’s new IP ... or at least drop a few hints about what it may be. We can expect some details about the new Need for Speed title, and of course there will be an array of sports that are much better than the sports games you bought last year.

Splatoon nabs first Switch special edition Pro controller

Those in the U.S. will get their first special edition Nintendo Switch Pro controller this July, and it’s Splatoon 2-themed. Although we’re huge fans of that series’ sense of style, we’re not sure that we can say the same about the color scheme of this controller.

We’ll start with the good. The body of the controller is gray with varied ink splats scattered a cross its face, dripping and oozing around its buttons. It’s the most subtle thing that this controller has going for it, but it’s also the feature that most obviously screams “Splatoon 2.

Valve shuts down Steam Greenlight, replacing it next week

Valve has closed Steam Greenlight, the service on which Steam users would vote on indie games to determine which titles would be published on the platform’s marketplace. Its replacement, Steam Direct, will launch in a week on June 13, the company announced today.

As of today, Valve is no longer accepting Steam Greenlight submissions from developers or votes from Steam users. Over 3,400 titles are still pending on the service, and Valve is asking people to “please be patient” while it reviews those projects itself — the company will determine the final set of games to make it through the process. Developers can request a refund of their $100 Greenlight fee if they already paid it but didn’t get the chance to submit anything, or if Valve ends up deciding not to greenlight their games.

A speedrunning great returns to claim a new Zelda world record

To speedrunning newcomers, Narcissa Wright may be known best as a legend of the scene. But those who have followed it for years know her as a champion streamer, one who held a world record time for running The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. After time away, she’s returned to speedrun the latest Zelda game, and this weekend, she did so in record fashion.

Wright finished all of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s main quests in just three hours, 43 minutes and 32 seconds, besting the time set by streamer Demoon9 just over a week earlier. This record came after several weeks of playing through the game at a much slower pace.

Bethesda E3 2017: What to expect

Bethesda E3 2017: What to expect

Bethesda showed us the first trailer for Prey at E3 last year, and Dishonored 2 was first revealed at E3 2015. Fallout 4 was revealed on June 3 in 2015, more details were given at Bethesda’s E3 press conference on June 14, and the game was released on Nov. 10.

Bethesda is comfortable with short hype cycles, something that’s rare in a business that seems to mostly run on promises and non-gameplay teaser trailers. That’s an exciting thing to think about, as games that are announced next week may be in our hands by the end of the year. So what do we expect from the company’s press conference? Well, the following tweet below gives some clues, and our thoughts follow after it.

Europe gets slick silver PS4, US only gets gold

Sony announced yesterday that it is releasing a limited-edition gold PlayStation 4 in North America this month. But what the company didn’t say until today is that European PlayStation fans are getting a second, much more attractive option: silver.

Both gold and silver PS4 consoles — the “slim” redesign, with a 500 GB hard drive — will be available across the pond starting June 28, Sony announced today on the European PlayStation Blog. The company is also releasing DualShock 4 controllers to match the two new metallic finishes. Just like in the States, both PS4 models will be limited editions.

PC Gaming Show 2017: What to expect

Of all the staged events leading up to E3, the PC Gaming Show has traditionally felt like the longest. The inaugural show in 2015 went nearly two-and-a-half hours and, despite promises to the contrary, the 2016 show came in around the same length. This year’s event, organized by our friends at PC Gamer and sponsored by Intel, kicks off Monday, June 12 at 1 pm ET and, while we have no assurances as to its duration, we do know that they’ve invited host Sean “Day9” Plott back to do the honors.

Here’s what we expect to learn about along the way.

Ubisoft’s E3 2017 press conference: time and live stream

Ubisoft’s 2017 E3 press conference is taking place on Monday, June 12 at 1 p.m. PDT / 4 p.m. EDT / 9 p.m. BST (When is that?). You can watch it live with us right here, at the top of this post.

We don’t know exactly what to expect from Ubisoft’s E3 press conference, although Aisha Taylor won’t be returning to host the event. Her presence was always a big reason the Ubisoft events were easier to watch than some of the more awkward competition, and this is a disappointment.
