The trouble with Zerglings: How Blizzard updated a classic (while keeping it the same)

The Classic Games division at Blizzard had some trouble when it came to re-creating StarCraft’s units in high resolution for StarCraft: Remastered. The first issue was that the original files had been lost, and the second issue is that the team couldn’t quite figure out what those few pixels that existed for each model were supposed to be.

“We did find some things, but considering [StarCraft] was basically the first project we worked on in 3D those assets were so terrible, and they were supposed to be rendered so small that so many shortcuts were taken. Things were intersecting things. There were pieces just kind of floating around,” Brian Sousa, the game’s art director told Polygon.

Switch owners weigh in on an iconic debate: Are hot dogs sandwiches?

Nintendo posed an important question to Switch owners several weeks ago: Is a hot dog a sandwich? It’s one of society’s most contentious debates, one with no clear-cut answer. But the results of the company’s poll are in — and Nintendo doesn’t seem so happy about them.

In a June Ask Me Anything session on Reddit with Super Mario Odyssey producer Yoshiaki Koizumi, fans first prompted the polarizing debate. When asked if Koizumi thought that a hot dog “counts as a sandwich,” his response was a flat “no.”

Watch 40 minutes of the Skaven gameplay from Total War: Warhammer 2

Recently the team at Creative Assembly announced that the Skaven are the fourth playable race in Total War: Warhammer 2. A few weeks back, we sat down with two members of the development team. They brought along gameplay video showing the Skaven in battle for the first time.

The Skaven are a race of malevolent, rat-like creatures that have been part of the Games Workshop Warhammer tabletop miniatures franchise since the beginning. Warhammer 2 will also feature the Lizardmen, High Elves and the Dark Elves. A free post-release update will allow owners of both Warhammer 2 and the original Total War: Warhammer to lead the Ratmen to victory over a combined world map.

Here are the new features in the PS4’s v5.0 firmware beta

Sony’s next major system software update for the PlayStation 4 is now available for testing in a closed beta, and we finally know what the version 5.0 firmware may bring to the console. Arguably none of its new elements are as big of a deal as the ones in the most recent major update, v4.50, which added features like support for USB external storage.

Chief among the new items in the v5.0 update is an overhaul of the way that Sony handles parental controls. Under the current system, a parent can use their own “master account” to create “sub accounts” for up to six family members under 18. However, any parental controls — such as preventing access to games based on their ESRB rating — apply to all users on the same console, including adults.

Fishing never looked more badass than in this video game trailer

Fishing is generally considered a leisure pursuit, undertaken as a relaxing summertime activity (except on a certain Discovery Channel show). But this trailer for Fishing Planet, a simulation fishing game from indie studio Fishing Planet, makes it look like anything but that.

This two-minute look at Fishing Planet is cut like a trailer for a Michael Bay movie, with everything but the explosions. We’re treated to a man holding a fishing rod intently, ready to reel in the line at the slightest tug; pans across environments like an alpine lake amid snow-capped mountains and a swamp dotted with tall trees; and slow-motion shots of a bright green lure sinking underwater.
