Steam users are attacking Dota 2 because there’s no more Half-Life

As Half-Life 2: Episode Two approaches its 10-year anniversary, fed up Half-Life fans are taking their long-simmering aggression out on one of Valve’s other games, Dota 2. As spotted by PCGamesN, Steam users are bombing the game with negative reviews, many of them laying blame on Valve’s popular MOBA for the lack of a new Half-Life game.

The rush to trash Dota 2 in Steam user reviews appears to be related to two recent developments: Valve’s announcement of Artifact, the Dota card game, at this year’s International tournament, and Half-Life writer Marc Laidlaw publishing what is widely interpreted to be the proposed plot to Half-Life 2: Episode Three.

Destiny’s most annoying leveling quirk is gone in Destiny 2

Destiny was full of maddening design decisions, choices that seemed like they had been made to pad out a shallow game and extend its punishing grind (if not to actively frustrate its players). Thankfully, one of the more aggravating elements of the way Destiny handled leveling has been fixed for Destiny 2, developer Bungie announced on Twitter yesterday.

“PSA: In [Destiny 2] it’s no longer advantageous to equip your most powerful gear when decrypting Engrams,” said Mark Noseworthy, project lead on Destiny 2, on Twitter last night. “We check for your best possible loadout now.”

The Pokémon anime’s bringing Brock and Misty back

Brock and Misty are heading back to the Pokémon cartoon next month, according to a new issue of Japanese kids’ magazine Telubi-kun. Ash Ketchum will reunite with his OG best friends in a Pokémon Sun and Moon two-parter that sends him home to Kanto.

Ash has been living in the Alola region this season, hanging out with Pikachu and making some new, goofy friends. But you never forget your first travel companions, and so Brock and Misty remain beloved. When this summer’s Pokémon movie — a reimagining of the first season — ditched the pair in favor of some unfamiliar faces, old-school fans were rightfully upset.

Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett stop by NBA 2K18’s broadcast booth

The NBA 2K franchise is so strong, it can take a couple of future basketball hall-of-famers and give them guest-star roles in the commentary booth, then play it off as a nice little atmospheric detail. That’s where this series sits in relation to its peers, none of whom come anywhere close in broadcast presentation.

Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett will visit with NBA 2K18’s broadcasters — again, the game has multiple booth teams, something no other sports video game is doing — as special guest commentators this year.

Half-Life writer: Episode 3 ‘fanfic’ timing and Artifact not connected

When Half-Life series writer (and ex-Valve staffer) Marc Laidlaw dropped a piece of fiction that read a lot like a possible Half-Life 2: Episode 3 plot over the weekend, it renewed fans’ angst with Half-Life publisher Valve.

Fan forums lit up with theories about why the studio has evidently abandoned Half-Life in the 10 years since it last released an entry in the series. After reading Laidlaw’s “Epistle 3” blog post, many pinned the blame for Half-Life’s demise on other projects, like the upcoming Artifact.

Here’s what’s included in ReCore: Definitive Edition

ReCore: Definitive Edition was announced a week ago during Microsoft’s Gamescom keynote. Yesterday, Comcept detailed exactly what that will mean when the game arrives Aug. 29.

It starts with “Eye of Obsidian,” a new chapter in the game’s main story. It takes players to a previously unexplored region of Far Eden, the game’s world. That’s followed by two new overworlds, 10 new dungeons, and a sandstorm region where surviving the storms and dangerous enemies delivers valuable loot.
