Save Me Mr. Tako is a spot-on Game Boy homage for Switch

Publisher Nicalis is bringing Save me Mr Tako: Tasukete Tako-San, a platformer starring a hat-wearing octopus, to Nintendo Switch and Windows PC later this year. It’s a good fit for Switch, which is replete with retro-style platformers, but few are as stylish as Save me Mr Tako.

Save me Mr Tako pays homage to the Game Boy (and Game Boy Color) with its visual design and limited color palette. Developer Christophe Galati is attempting to stay true to Nintendo’s late-’80s handheld by restricting Save me Mr Tako to just four colors onscreen at a time. The game’s soundtrack also uses “Game Boy-era instrumentation,” according to a press release from Nicalis.

PlayStation Plus games for September include a free VR title

September’s PlayStation Plus games included a PlayStation VR-compatible title, among several other games — a giveaway that makes sense, considering Sony is effectively slashing the price on its virtual reality headset.

That game is RIGS: Mechanized Combat League, a unique sports game where players control mechs in a variety of matches. It requires the PSVR headset to play, so you’re out of luck on this title if you’re without one. There’s time to pick up the now-$399 headset bundle and still get the game for free, however, as the giveaway is live from Sept. 5 until Nov. 7.

The Walking Dead meets Pokémon Go in upcoming AR game

The Walking Dead: Our World is a new augmented reality game on the way from Finland’s Next Games. It will allow players to use their phones to find and kill zombies overlayed on top of the real world, and is compatible with both iOS and Android devices. No release date has been given for the free-to-play title, but Next Games says the app is coming “soon.”

A teaser trailer released yesterday shows people wandering around with their mobile devices to collect weapons and kill zombies. At one point in the trailer a player hides in a convenience store, startled by sounds and flickering shadows coming from the back room. Later on, a player turns on their phone’s flashlight feature to find their way through a dark hallway. Items appear to be placed in the world rather than just floating in space. At one point in the trailer a player picks up a katana that’s resting on a picnic table.

Sonic Mania on PC has surprise DRM, but at least it’s now playable offline

Sonic Mania is now on Steam after a two-week delay, but those who waited find it comes with a catch: The PC version comes with Denuvo, an unpopular anti-piracy software that surprised players with its inclusion.

Complaints about Denuvo cropped up on Sonic Mania’s Steam community forum shortly after launch. Sega failed to note on the game’s store page that Mania came with the digital rights management service built in, so when buyers found it included in the game, they felt duped.

Losing Miiverse messes with these Wii U, 3DS games

Miiverse is on its way out this November, to our extreme disappointment. The community forum was one of the best ways for Wii U and 3DS owners to hang out, share their impressive artwork and provide us with some of the last console generation’s best laughs. It had another purpose, too: It enhanced several of the biggest titles on both consoles.

Now that Miiverse is kicking the bucket, we’re going to miss out on some of the most novel features on these consoles. Follow along to see how the loss of Miiverse impacts titles from Mario Kart 8 to Xenoblade Chronicles X.

Sonic Mania player misreads boss sprite, now we have Dr. Eggman's evil niece

If you played video games created during the 8-bit or 16-bit eras, chances are good you might have misread what an artist was trying to convey with just a few dozen pixels. Players have famously misinterpreted Toad from Super Mario Bros. — is he ... flipping me off? — and what Agahnim from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past actually looked like.

One Sonic Mania player fell victim to sprite misreading recently, and the result is pretty great: a new original character that’s being embraced by Sonic the Hedgehog fans.
