My Little Pony continues along path toward total domination of tabletop gaming

When it comes to children’s toys, crossovers are a dangerous game. So color me surprised to learn of the growing love fest between Hasbro’s polar opposite brands, My Little Pony and Dungeons & Dragons.

Best I can figure, it all started last year on Friendship Day which, Wikipedia tells me, is an actual Hallmark holiday. Nevertheless, it was a good opportunity for the Hasbro company to support GenerationOn, a children’s charity that promotes the participation of kids and teens in service projects and volunteering.

Nintendo Switch’s hidden Golf rumor explained by a sweet theory

Golf was programmed by the late Satoru Iwata, the former Nintendo president who died in 2015. Justin Epperson, a senior producer for the Japanese localization company 8-4, Ltd. said Japanese Twitter believes this to be a kind of memorial to Iwata.

Golf is imbedded in the Switch firmware and JP internet is calling it an “omamori” or charm from Iwata (he coded the game himself)

Super Mario Odyssey capture abilities keep getting weirder

Super Mario Odyssey‘s magical hat Cappy is still a mystery. Is he a ghost that possesses hats? Some kind of alien that transforms on a whim? A hallucination brought on Mario’s PTSD from losing his trusty red cap?

While we probably won’t get a full answer until the game’s release, Polygon did get to see some of Cappy’s origin story at a recent Nintendo preview event. (You can see some of our experiences in the gameplay video, above.) Super Mario Odyssey’s early game takes place in the Cap Kingdom, Cappy’s home country.

Xbox One X pre-orders are back

Microsoft today announced that pre-ordering is now open for the Xbox One X, which is due for release on Nov. 7. The company previously ran a pre-order campaign for the Xbox One X Scorpio Edition — which included a vertical stand — but that quickly sold out.

Microsoft has long boasted that the Xbox One X will be “the world’s most powerful console.” The console’s GPU boasts 40 Radeon compute units running at 1172 MHz. On the CPU side, there are eight custom x86 cores at 2.3 GHz, 31 percent faster than the original Xbox One. The Xbox One X includes 12 GB of GDDR5 RAM — 8 GB of which is available to developers, and 4 GB of which is reserved for the system — with a total memory bandwidth of 326 GB/s. It costs $499.

Final Fantasy 15’s online multiplayer mode goes live in October

The online multiplayer expansion for Final Fantasy 15, Comrades, will be available starting Oct. 31. A new trailer released by Square Enix ahead of Tokyo Game Show debuts new footage from the mode, which takes place following the main campaign’s 13th chapter.

Up to four players will control their own custom hero, a member of the Kingsglaive army. They’ll embark upon a series of quests that are both multiplayer- and single-player-based, with each one unlocking new abilities and furthering the soldiers on their path to saving the Lucian kingdom. Along the way, characters from the main storyline will appear, including Noctis’ main boys Prompto, Gladiolus and Ignis in a future update.

Steam implements histogram to identify review bombings following Firewatch incident

Game pages on Steam will now be accompanied by a visual chart displaying a visual history of user reviews to help identify review bombing incidents in the wake of Campo Santo’s Firewatch coming under attack.

In a blog post on Steam’s community page, UI designer Alden Kroll wrote about the reasoning behind implementing a histogram instead of deciding to remove user scores or adding a temporary lock on user reviews for a specific game. In the case of review bombs — an act where people upset with a developer for reasons to do either with the game or those that exist outside of the game start assigning poor review scores in droves — Kroll suggested that providing an entire review history may better illustrate a more accurate picture of people’s opinion on the game.

New Overwatch patch brings in Junkertown map, Mercy and D.Va tweaks

Overwatch’s latest update is now live on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One, and it’s a big one — a new map and major changes to characters such as Mercy and D.Va are on the docket.

Today’s patch, which updates Overwatch to version 1.15.0.1 on consoles, features the new Junkertown map. Introduced during Gamescom last month and released on the game’s Public Test Region at the end of August, Junkertown is an Australia-based playground for the Escort gametype, and it’s the hometown of Roadhog and Junkrat. Here’s the map’s description from Blizzard:
