EA delists Need for Speed games from digital stores with little warning

Publisher Electronic Arts delisted five older Need for Speed games on Monday, citing the games’ impending retirement of online services. EA offered little warning about the Need for Speed games’ delisting, angering fans of the venerable racing series.

The five delisted titles are Need for Speed: Carbon (2006), Need for Speed: Undercover (2008), Need for Speed: Shift (2009), Need for Speed Shift 2: Unleashed (2011), and Need for Speed: The Run (2011). In a statement posted to Reddit on Monday, a representative for EA said that “the number of players has come to a point where it’s no longer feasible to continue the work behind the scenes required to keep [the games] up and running.”

New Battlefield reveal coming June 9

Electronic Arts and developer DICE will reveal the next game in the Battlefield franchise on June 9, the publisher announced Tuesday. This year’s Battlefield will be unveiled next Wednesday — at the conclusion of a countdown that starts at 10 a.m. EDT/7 a.m. PDT. Exactly when the game will be revealed is unclear.

EA has revealed little about the direction of this year’s Battlefield entry, colloquially referred to as Battlefield 6, but it may just bear the name Battlefield. Oskar Gabrielson, general manager at DICE, has called the sequel “a bold step” for the franchise.

Far Cry 6 writer: Yeah, our game is political

Far Cry 6’s story is unequivocally “political,” the game’s narrative director says. It’s a pivot from the previous stance Ubisoft developers have claimed in seeking to avoid controversy leading up to their AAA game launches.

“Our story is political. A story about a modern revolution must be,” Navid Khavari said in a statement posted on Monday. Far Cry 6 is set in the fictitious island nation of Yara, which is an analogue for Cuba under its communist regime of the past 62 years.

First look at the Borderlands movie teases Cate Blanchett’s Lilith

Actor and fighting game enthusiast Jamie Lee Curtis gave Borderlands fans their first look at the upcoming movie based on Gearbox’s looter-shooter series on Tuesday. Curtis, who plays Tannis in the film, snapped and posted a pic of Cate Blanchett on the set of Borderlands. And even though we only see Blanchett in silhouette, it’s evident that her portrayal of the siren Lilith hews closely to her in-game look.

Curtis posted the behind-the-scenes shot to her Instagram, calling Lilith “our legendary heroine, psycho blasting, vault hunting vixen with a bad attitude.” Curtis also teased imminent sneak peeks at the rest of the cast, including Kevin Hart as Roland, Jack Black as Claptrap, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, and Florian Munteanu as Krieg.

Far Cry 6 will launch with the franchise’s largest arsenal of weapons in October

On its face, Far Cry 6’s newest class of weapon, the Supremo, doesn’t need any justification. When Far Cry 6 launches Oct. 21, 2021, players will strap on the Supremo backpack of their choice. When bad shit goes down, it will unload a brutal attack when they need it most — like firing off a barrage of rockets. It’s awesome. Enough said.

But David Grivel, Far Cry 6’s lead designer, and his team came up with a backstory for these Supremo contraptions anyway. “Supremos are inspired by Yaran comic books,” Grivel said, referring to Far Cry 6’s setting on the island nation of Yara, an in-fiction analog for Cuba. When the subject of these comics, created as part of Far Cry 6’s backstory, comes up during our interview he’s positively beaming.

Watch 14 minutes of Horizon Forbidden West PS5 gameplay

Horizon Forbidden West was the focus of the latest episode of Sony’s State of Play series, which showcased a bunch of new gameplay details about Aloy’s next journey in a lengthy clip of game footage.

In the 14-minute gameplay reveal, developer Guerrilla Games showed Aloy encountering a group of raiders from the Tenakth tribe who had captured her friend Erend. These enemies can override and ride the game’s mechanized beasts, known simply as Machines. Aloy herself rode a Machine in a battle against a gigantic new monster, a mammothlike creature known as the Tremortusk.

Fortnite seems to be getting a Mistborn crossover

The world of Scadrial seems to be joining the Fortnite metaverse. Scadrial belongs to the Mistborn book series written by Brandon Sanderson, who teased the collaboration by retweeting the official Fortnite Twitter account. But it’s not clear just yet what is actually coming to the game.

If you aren’t into fantasy books, Brandon Sanderson is among the most popular and prolific authors working in the genre at the moment — he’s written in other genres but fantasy is what he’s best known for. Among fans’ favorite Sanderson books is the Mistborn series, which currently has two separate sequels and one shorter transition book between. Sanderson’s also got another extremely popular fantasy series called The Stormlight Archive, which will eventually stretch to 10 books but has only released four so far.

House of Ashes, the next Dark Pictures game, addresses fan feedback

In House of Ashes, the upcoming third game of the Dark Pictures Anthology, players get to work their way through another short but intense multi-perspective horror narrative. The game’s protagonist is Rachel King, a marine played by High School Musical’s Ashley Tisdale. House of Ashes is about King on a mission in Iraq in 2003.

Polygon recently spoke with the anthology’s executive producer Dan McDonald and saw some narrative and gameplay footage from the upcoming installment. Rachel’s situation quickly gets complex; her ex-husband shows up while she’s in a new relationship, her team is searching for WMDs that never existed, and they get ambushed. The fight awakens something supernatural that pulls both the American and Iraqi fighters down into an underground ruin from Sumerian myth.
