Pokémon Go’s Halloween event datamine all but confirms gen three is on its way

Pokémon Go’s big Halloween update could bring some exciting changes to the game, based on findings from big-time dataminers in The Silph Road guild. These range from bug fixes to anti-cheating tools, but the grabbiest one is our first look at what could the game’s first third-gen Pokémon.

A splash screen found in the game’s latest file package shows several ghost- and dark-type Pokémon, like the familiar Gengar, Zubat and Murkrow. Also included in the new assets are several Pokémon from the third-generation games: Dusclops, Duskull, Sableye, Shuppet and Bannette.

The Super NT is Analogue’s most affordable console yet

The Super NT is the latest, and most affordable, retro console from Analogue, the manufacturer of the luxe, but for many prohibitively expensive, NT and NT mini. While the NT and NT mini simulated a Nintendo Entertainment System, the Super NT simulates a Super Nintendo thanks to a “bigger, more powerful, more expensive FPGA” (field-programmable gate array) chip at the core of the console. Whereas the NT and NT mini were $499 and $449 respectively, the Super NT will be just $190 when it’s available for sale in February. Preorders for the Super NT open today.

Analogue’s Christopher Taber says they’ve been able to hit this new price point thanks to a combination of factors.

CD Projekt Red pens defense against staff morale rumors

CD Projekt Red, the Polish developer in charge of GOG.com and The Witcher franchise, is aware of the rumors surrounding it — which suggest that the studio is not a very good place to work. In an open letter posted to its Twitter account, the company addressed growing concerns about staff esteem, mostly by talking around the subject.

“If you’re following news related to CD PROJEKT RED, you might have recently stumbled on information regarding morale here at the studio,” wrote co-founder Marcin Iwinski and studio head Adam Badowski.

Tekken 7’s story mode is its tutorial, because no one reads the instructions

Tekken 7, which launched on consoles and PC over the summer, does not have tutorials. There’s a good reason for this. Bandai Namco’s producers have studied the series’ telemetry and they know that even if a tutorial is offered, players don’t spend enough time in it to make it a worthwhile feature.

That’s per PCGamesN, in an interview with longtime Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada. “You hear a lot of people say this game is great because it has a tutorial but when we look at the data, not many people play these tutorial modes," Harada said.

Top Playstation studio Naughty Dog responds to allegations of sex harassment

Naughty Dog, the developer of The Last of Us and Uncharted franchises, has acknowledged, while disputing, allegations of sexual harassment made by a designer this weekend on social media.

David Ballard, a designer no longer with the studio, alleged in a series of tweets on Saturday that he was terminated in February 2016 after informing the studio and the human resources department of its parent, Sony Interactive Entertainment, of the harassment allegations. He said he was offered $20,000 in severance pay on the condition that he remain silent about his time with the studio. Ballard said he refused.

U.K. lawmaker gets involved in loot-box controversy

A member of the United Kingdom’s parliament has opened an inquiry into the loot-box model of microtransactions in console games, on behalf of a constituent who asked him about the legality of the practice.

Daniel Zeichner, a Labour MP from Cambridge, posed two questions to Karen Bradley, the U.K.’s secretary of state for digital, culture, media and sport. Zeichner asked what steps she will take “to protect vulnerable adults and children from illegal gambling, in-game gambling and loot boxes within computer games.”

Tomo Ohira was 13 years old, probably 90 pounds, and fought utterly mistake-proof in Street Fighter 2. He is widely regarded as the natural of his sport. “Hands down the number one player at the time,” says Jeff Schaefer, a top fighter of the day. And then he vanished.

“His name rung out though the arcades in Southern California,” said Mike Watson, one of the greatest Street Fighter 2 champions of all time. “Everyone wanted to find Tomo, play against him.”
