Dragon Ball FighterZ adds memorably memed villains — and lots of bonding

The roster for Dragon Ball FighterZ will include two surprising, old-school villains, according to translated scans of the new issue of V Jump magazine. Ginyu and Nappa join the roster, bringing to mind some classic goofs from the cartoon series.

Nappa is perhaps the brawniest and baldest Saiyan in the Dragon Ball cast. His struggles with hair loss, and role as the much tinier Vegeta’s eternal sidekick, make him pretty unforgettable. (Also, the fact that Nappa was strong enough to kill thousands of civilians and almost blow up an entire city shouldn’t be ignored.) Except, well, Nappa actually was forgotten fairly quickly, dying at the end of Dragon Ball Z’s first story arc.

Denuvo DRM broken within 24 hours of South Park’s launch, say hackers

Denuvo DRM broken within 24 hours of South Park’s launch, say hackers

Once again, Denuvo’s anti-piracy protection has been broken by hackers not even a day past the launch of a major game using it. This time it’s South Park: The Fractured But Whole, which launched yesterday.

Two warez sites have links to the full PC version of game on filesharing lockers. At this point it’s probably fair to say the woe-is-me message from pirates about 18 months ago, when it took them a while to beat Just Cause 3’s DRM, was probably FUD. They had little trouble with Middle-earth: Shadow of War’s protection, and Sonic Mania’s before that.

New Pokémon Go third-gen datamine points to a pretty huge mistake

Pokémon Go dataminers continue to find signs that the third generation of Pokémon is close to debuting in-game. A set of new details about them has been uncovered from recent update files — including a surprising, almost amusing error on Niantic’s part.

Members of The Silph Road have shared code that points to the gender ratios of every gen-three Pokémon. With many of them, the numbers are familiar; these ratios are typically identical to those from the traditional games. That means we can expect female starter Pokémon to be a lot more uncommon than male, for example.

What’s the status of EA’s Star Wars games?

What’s the status of EA’s Star Wars games?

Electronic Arts announced today that it will close Visceral Games, after deciding to reshape the studio’s Star Wars project from a traditional single-player adventure into “a broader experience.” The publisher’s explanation is couched in ambiguous language, but the big takeaway is this: Visceral’s intended Star Wars game was story-focused and linear, at a time when open-world multiplayer campaigns with varied gameplay are the games du jour.

We knew little about Visceral’s take on Star Wars, other than the name of its director — Uncharted veteran Amy Hennig — and its proposed style of gameplay. But aside from the booming Star Wars Battlefront franchise, Visceral’s untitled Star Wars game remains the only one EA has shown off the most from its ballyhooed licensing deal. And four years into said deal, that’s saying a lot.

EA shutting down Visceral Games, overhauling Star Wars game

Electronic Arts is shutting down its Visceral Games studio and making major changes to the team’s in-development Star Wars project, EA executive vice president Patrick Söderlund announced today.

Visceral has been working on an action-adventure game set in the Star Wars universe in some form since 2013, when EA and Disney announced a multi-year game deal. It’s been described as a “story-based, linear adventure,” but based on comments from Söderlund, EA is making a “significant change” to that title.

Miniature, collectible arcade cabinets are coming starting with Centipede

There is an undeniable allure to owning a full-size, authentic old-school arcade cabinet, but there are some major hurdles to arcade game ownership: They’re hulking, heavy, often expensive and require rather serious upkeep. One company is trying to give aspiring collectors a taste of the home arcade experience, albeit at a much smaller scale.

New Wave Toys is making a line of licensed arcade cabinets called RepliCades — 12-inch (or one-sixth scale) versions of ’70s and ’80s arcade games. Those miniature arcade machines are fully-playable versions of the original games housed inside wood and metal cabinets and displayed on a 3.5-inch LCD screen. The machines will include LED backlighting to light up their marquees and rechargeable lithium ion batteries. New Wave promises “smooth, lag-free gameplay.”

Lucasfilm’s “Untitled Han Solo movie” is untitled no more. The stand-alone film that will focus on Star Wars’ most lovable scoundrel is officially titled Solo: A Star Wars Story, Lucasfilm and director Ron Howard announced today.

Howard also said in a video message posted to Twitter that production on the film has wrapped, completing its extended and headline-grabbing reshoots.

Hey #Twitterville we just wrapped production so here's a special message #StarWars pic.twitter.com/8QJqN5BGxr

Nintendo Switch eShop got a very good, very small update

Nintendo Switch eShop updated this week to add a new section: Games on Sale. It’s a seemingly minor change that, when you think about it, says a lot about what Nintendo is doing with its hybrid console.

For one, the company is starting to slowly catch on to how to run the storefront in a way that best serves its customers. Of course the eShop should have a place where we can find what’s on sale; that’s a common, expected category. Although the area is sparse right now, with nearly 500 Switch games already available, we expect the section to eventually become a useful place to sift through for some good deals. Other updates post-launch include a top sellers chart, another simple but effective filter.
