Super Mario Odyssey drops these Mario mainstays

Super Mario Odyssey is another stellar game in the franchise — but it’s anything but a classic one. For Mario’s first big Switch outing, Nintendo made a surprisingly large number of changes to the series formula. Follow along for some of the biggest ways that Odyssey shakes things up.

Other sandbox-y Mario games give our hero a nice, familiar place to return to after finishing a level. Super Mario Galaxy has Rosalina’s home planet; Super Mario 64 has Peach’s Castle. Those felt homey in a way that, frankly, Super Mario Odyssey’s version doesn’t. Instead of an area to run around between his travels, Mario and his magical pal Cappy hang out in their hat-shaped ship, the Odyssey. It’s really quaint ... maybe too quaint. But at least it has a fun costume closet to play with.

Yes, B.J. Blazkowicz is Jewish

Throughout the Wolfenstein series, one question has remained unanswered: Is protagonist B.J. Blazkowicz Jewish? His name sounds Ashkenazic or Eastern European in origin. He loves killing Nazis. And Jewish mysticism has become a thread in his most recent adventures.

Id Software co-founders John Carmack and Tom Hall have stated for years that the hero was meant to be of Jewish descent, but the original games never made this explicitly canon.

Ezio Auditore’s family home contained a secret room with seven statues of legendary historical Assassins. One of them, of course, is Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, protagonist of the first Assassin’s Creed game.

What’s in Middle-earth: Shadow of War’s expansion pass?

Middle-earth: Shadow of War’s expansion pass, a $39.99 add-on, will add two new Orc tribes and two story expansions — both of which focus on new playable characters — to the action-adventure game.

Publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment detailed the four pieces of content coming to Shadow of War over the next six months as part of the expansion pass. As seen in the trailer above, the expansion pass will let players battle and dominate the blood-soaked Slaughter Tribe and the rebellious Outlaw Tribe. They’ll also be able to play as Eltariel, an elite assassin known as the Blade of Galadriel, and Baranor, the Captain of Minas Ithil, in the story-based expansions.
