Musical adventure Wandersong brings cuteness and quirk to Switch next year

Humble Bundle is bringing Wandersong, an inspired musical puzzle game reminiscent of, oddly enough, Undertale and Night in the Woods, to Nintendo Switch. The indie favorite will launch in early 2018, and its debut console trailer shows why it should be on your radar.

A sidescroller with a combat system driven by music, Wandersong stars a joyous bard who ventures through the land in the hopes of — what else? — saving the world. To do this, he’ll have to defeat enemies and solve puzzles using his singing voice alone.

Streaming service Hulu is coming to Nintendo Switch. Nintendo confirmed (somewhat unceremoniously) that the app will be released via the eShop this week in its weekly “Nintendo Download” email.

There’s no release date for Hulu on Switch — the eShop typically updates on Fridays and Tuesdays — nor are there any additional details. The product page for Hulu on Nintendo.com is not currently live. We’ve reached out to Nintendo and Hulu for more details.

Discord introducing new feature to make jumping into games with friends easier

Discord is introducing a new tool today for developers to make it easier for players to jump into games with friends, spectate during matches and send party invites.

The feature, dubbed Rich Presence by the Discord team, is a software development kit (SDK) that will allow for easier integration of games and Discord users. The idea is to do away with friend codes and, essentially, limit the number of windows people need to open to start playing a game with one another. The SDK will allow players to see other “game status on players’ profiles” and join or participate in “in-game spectating directly from Discord,” according to a press release from the company.

Doctor Who’s first female Doctor, Jodie Whitaker, gets a fantastic new costume

The BBC revealed a first look at Jodie Whitaker’s costume as the 13th Doctor in Doctor Who this morning, and it’s pretty damn good.

Unlike the previous doctor’s costume, which was worn by actor Peter Capaldi in the role, Whitaker’s costume is a little funkier. There’s a ‘70s aesthetic woven into the fabric, and it’s fair to say that with the suspenders, the costume is somewhat reminiscent of Matt Smith’s suspenders he donned as the 11th Doctor. Other people have pointed out that Whitaker’s costume, including the suspenders, also bears resemblance to Robin Williams’ classic sitcom character from the ‘70s, Mork from Mork and Mindy.

Brands sure do love stealing Firewatch’s art

Campo Santo’s Firewatch is gorgeous. Set in the Wyoming wilderness during the 1980s, the narrative adventure game puts players in the shoes of a 30-something man named Henry, who spends a summer manning a fire lookout tower in the Shoshone National Forest. Firewatch offers stunning vistas from that tower and elsewhere, and stirs the same emotions that nature’s bounty does in real life, even though it doesn’t have photorealistic graphics.

The beauty of Firewatch — which is augmented by some terrific and easily recognizable graphic design — is perhaps the reason why multiple companies have lifted elements of its art and design for their own use.

Activision says Call of Duty: WWII sold twice as many copies as Infinite Warfare

After wringing its hands publicly over the weak sales of last year’s Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Activision was quick to announce today that Call of Duty: WWII is selling well. A press release issued today claims that WWII has sold twice as many units as Infinite Warfare did at launch, but did not include hard numbers.

Activision said that WWII “set a record as the best-selling digital full game by units sold on its first day of availability” on the PlayStation 4. The statement goes on to claim that WWII’s opening day sales, in dollars, beat out Thor: Ragnarok and Wonder Woman’s opening weekends combined.

Miiverse draws to an end with a very sweet thank-you mosaic

Yesterday, Nintendo fans said farewell to Miiverse by memorializing their favorite posts — funny, silly or poignant. Today, Nintendo responded with a very sweet mosaic thanking its fans for five years of memories on the Wii U and 3Ds’ social network.

The large size version is here, and if you zoom in on it, you’ll see thousands of users’ drawings, all of them saying thanks, farewell or some combination of the sentiments, in multiple languages. Many feature sad characters, so if you’re a Nintendo fan who is prone to get the feels, it might be a good idea to brace yourself, or maybe look over it when you’re alone.

What do the numbers on the Xbox One X Project Scorpio Edition box mean?

What do the numbers on the Xbox One X Project Scorpio Edition box mean?

Microsoft launched the Xbox One X yesterday, and thousands upon thousands of people have surely unboxed their new consoles by now. A subset of those boxes contained a special version of the hardware for early pre-order customers, the Project Scorpio Edition. With the gray stipple pattern on the unit’s shell and the “Project Scorpio” codename in green emblazoned on the left side of its front face, the console evokes the design language and heritage of the Xbox platform.

There’s a much more subtle nod to Xbox history on the box itself — that is, the packaging for the console — but you might not have caught it.
