Geoff Keighley’s annual video game award show extravaganza, The Game Awards, is back for its fourth year. The ceremony, which is being broadcasted from downtown Los Angeles, is expected to honor the best in video games over the last year, as well as debut new trailers for upcoming titles. We’re also anticipating a few exciting new game announcements throughout the event.

Most importantly, The Game Awards may give us another opportunity to spot last year’s breakout star from the event: the Schick Hydrobot mascot.

PS4 sales top 70 million units worldwide

Sony has now sold more than 70.6 million PlayStation 4 consoles worldwide, the company announced today.

The figure, which consists of internal Sony sales estimates, covers the period from the PS4’s debut in November 2013 through this past Sunday, Dec. 3. It represents sell-through to consumers, not units shipped to retailers (aka “sell-in”). The company does not break out sales figures for the PlayStation 4 Pro, although the head of the U.S. PlayStation division told Polygon in June that at the time, one out of every five PS4s sold was a PS4 Pro.

Ubisoft will release an update for Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle this week that adds a new competitive Versus mode to the Nintendo Switch game. That free update drops Friday, Dec. 8.

Versus mode, which is limited to two players on the same system, will let players select a team of three heroes and “use every attack and technique available to them to claim victory across small, surprise-filled maps,” Ubisoft said on its official blog.

Devil May Cry collection coming to PS4, Xbox One and PC in 2018

The first three Devil May Cry games are coming to PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One in 2018, Capcom announced today. The Devil May Cry HD Collection will included Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 2 and Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening Special Edition.

Capcom released a similarly titled collection featuring the same three games in 2012 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Based on screenshots released by Capcom (check the gallery below), the 2018 re-release will look similar graphically to that last-generation release.

As Discord nears 100 million users, safety concerns are heard

Discord has almost quadrupled its user base in the past year, jumping from 25 million registered users to more than 90 million estimated by the end of the year.

The company told Polygon the social media service designed for gamers to hang out and chat with each other reached 87 million users at the end of November, and is expected to hit 90 million by mid-December. A company representative said that Discord maintains an average of 14 million daily users, with 1.5 million people signing up for a Discord account every week.

2017: The year of story-driven sports video games

This year wasn’t the debut of the narrative mode in sports video games. They’ve been around since 2011’s Fight Night Champion. But I think it will be remembered as the year when they became a baseline expectation of the big-budget, league-licensed sports title, the same way every multiplayer shooter still has to launch with a campaign.

Sports video games have told comeback stories, underdog stories, dynasty stories for decades. We’ve just had to supply the pathos ourselves, scribbling on the margins of the game action to give context to our created heroes’ feats. Relating these stories to others has been a combination of telling someone about a weird dream and talking about your fantasy sports team, both of which no one wants to hear about.

Doom VFR does enough right, but just barely

Doom VFR does enough right, but just barely

Doom VFR for the PlayStation VR (it’s also available on the HTC Vive) is worth buying, but it does everything in its power to fight the strengths it does have, and which just barely overshadow the problems.

And those problems are almost all due to id Software misunderstanding that virtual reality is a unique medium. You are supposed to be the character in the game; it’s your body doing these actions and experiencing their results. Why, then, does the main character speak in Doom VFR? Not only does he have a bland voice that gives you information that’s rarely necessary, but his voice also has to be pretty distracting if you’re a woman hoping to be immersed in the game.

Ryan Reynolds to reportedly star as Pikachu in Detective Pikachu movie

Actor Ryan Reynolds is set to star in the live-action Detective Pikachu movie as Pikachu, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter. Reynolds’ role will reportedly be “motion-capture in nature,” in case there was any confusion about whether Pikachu was going to be reimagined as a hunky human detective.

Reynolds will star alongside actors Justice Smith (The Get Down, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) and Kathryn Newton (Big Little Lies, Halt and Catch Fire) in Detective Pikachu. Smith plays the son of a man who is kidnapped, while Newton plays a “sassy journalist.” The two will team up with Reynolds’ Pikachu to track down the father of Smith’s character.

Some Destiny 2 activities now unavailable without DLC purchase

Destiny 2 players are up in arms yet again, now that the game’s first expansion, Curse of Osiris, has been released: People who have not purchased the add-on are discovering that they can no longer play some of the game’s high-level endgame content.

Endgame content in Destiny focuses on raids and the Nightfall strike, as well as the more challenging “Prestige” versions of those activities. Curse of Osiris raises the soft cap for Destiny 2 power levels to 330 from 300, which is the limit in vanilla Destiny 2. The recommended power level for the game’s toughest — and most rewarding — activities has also risen accordingly.

Steam ends support for bitcoin

Valve is ending support for Steam purchases made with bitcoin, the company said today, citing “high fees and volatility” in the value of the cryptocurrency.

“In the past few months we've seen an increase in the volatility in the value of Bitcoin and a significant increase in the fees to process transactions on the Bitcoin network,” Valve said in a post on Steam. “For example, transaction fees that are charged to the customer by the Bitcoin network have skyrocketed this year, topping out at close to $20 a transaction last week (compared to roughly $0.20 when we initially enabled Bitcoin). Unfortunately, Valve has no control over the amount of the fee. These fees result in unreasonably high costs for purchasing games when paying with Bitcoin. The high transaction fees cause even greater problems when the value of Bitcoin itself drops dramatically.”
