World War Z, the zombie apocalypse novel turned movie, is becoming a video game. The game, simply titled World War Z, was revealed during today’s The Game Awards.

Developed by Saber Interactive, the studio whose work includes shooters like Inversion, Timeshift and Quake Champions, World War Z is coming to PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One.

Publisher THQ Nordic just revealed (a little earlier than planned) a new survival game set in the “the cold and deadly world of an apocalyptic winter” called Fade to Silence. The game, developed by Black Forest Games, is set to come to Steam Early Access next week on Dec. 14.

“Can you survive in an environment of unrelenting winter, fighting not only hunger and monsters, but also nature itself?” the game’s official description asks.

Since the announcement of their partnership, Microsoft says they’ve given enhanced support to the team at PUBG Corporation to bring Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds to market. That includes loaning them the time and expertise of The Coalition, makers of Gears of War 4.

Nico Bihary is Microsoft’s executive producer on the project. He says that while Battlegrounds is technically a second-party title, his organization has nonetheless given it enhanced support. In many ways, Bihary said, it’s being treated like a first-party title.

Facebook Messenger users have been playing games directly within the app for a year now, and Facebook is expanding the platform with major gaming brands like Angry Birds and Sonic the Hedgehog, the company announced today.

Amsterdam-based CoolGames is working with Rovio to bring Angry Birds to Messenger’s Instant Games platform in early 2018. Known simply as Angry Birds, it will offer the series’ usual flicking-birds-to-destroy-structures gameplay with “an exciting new way to challenge friends,” said Facebook; you can watch a teaser trailer above. CoolGames also developed an Instant Games version of Tetris that launched at the end of November.

Overwatch’s holiday event returns next week with new Mei-focused mode

It’s that time of year: Overwatch’s seasonal event for the holidays, Winter Wonderland, returns Dec. 12 on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One, developer Blizzard Entertainment announced today.

As usual, the event will offer a number of seasonally appropriate legendary skins, although Blizzard isn’t revealing them just yet. In a developer update video, which you can watch above, Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan did confirm that at least three heroes will receive holiday-themed skins.

This is Nintendo Switch eShop’s busiest release week yet

Never say that December is a dry month for new games. That’s certainly not true for Nintendo Switch, which receives 22 (!!!) titles to the eShop between today, Dec. 7, and Dec. 12. That marks the highest number of new games to hit the Nintendo eShop at once so far.

This is not an outpouring of games-for-the-sake-of-games, either — this busy week includes Switch versions of annualized franchises, intriguing indies and addictive, absurdist ports. It’s kind of a weird mix, to be sure, but it’s exciting for Switch owners nonetheless. Some highlights:

Far Cry 5 and The Crew 2 delayed

Far Cry 5 and The Crew 2 will be delayed, Ubisoft announced today in a brief blog post.

The new launch date for Far Cry 5 is March 27, 2018. That’s been revised from Feb. 27, 2018. The new launch window for The Crew 2 is the first half of Ubisoft’s next fiscal year, which begins April 2018. That’s been revised from March 16, 2018.

Geoff Keighley’s annual video game award show extravaganza, The Game Awards, is back for its fourth year. The ceremony, which is being broadcasted from downtown Los Angeles, is expected to honor the best in video games over the last year, as well as debut new trailers for upcoming titles. We’re also anticipating a few exciting new game announcements throughout the event.

Most importantly, The Game Awards may give us another opportunity to spot last year’s breakout star from the event: the Schick Hydrobot mascot.
