Watch new Far Cry 5 gameplay

I went to see Ubisoft this week, and spent a couple of hours playing Far Cry 5. The captured footage in my video features world exploration, a side-quest involving bovine gonads, the rescue of sidekick mutt Boomer and the eradication of an enemy outpost.

Based on my time with the game, Far Cry 5 looks to be exactly what you'd expect from a game in this series. It's a Ubisoft open world in which I explore and unlock new areas of geography, destroying enemy nests while undertaking specific story missions. It’s big and complicated with lots of things to do.

Pokémon Go’s latest mystery is Wurmple’s evolution

Now that the third generation of Pokémon is obtainable in Pokémon Go, there’s a new evolution that players are trying to figure out. Wurmple, a common bug-type Pokémon, has two different forms it can evolve into — but no one is quite sure how to force Wurmple to evolve into the one they want.

Wurmple evolves into Silicoon or Cascoon, two cocoon-esque Pokémon that then transform into Beautifly or Dustox, respectively. In its debut games Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, the form that Wurmple evolves into is based upon an unknown number that defines its personality — which is something beyond the players’ control. Therefore, whether you get a Silicoon or a Cascoon is pretty much random, unlike nearly any other Pokémon in the franchise.

‘Net neutrality has never been an issue for us,’ says Disney CEO

After the FCC voted 3-2 in favor of repealing net neutrality, Disney’s CEO reiterated that net neutrality has never been an issue for the company.

CEO Bob Iger spoke this evening during a Q&A held by Disney’s executive team following the company’s major, $52.4 billion acquisition of 21st Century Fox. When asked how he views the debate around net neutrality, which could potentially grant internet service providers the ability to control traffic for sites through the introduction of fast lanes, which would allow individual companies to pay an additional fee to deliver content faster to customers, Iger said the company is neutral on the matter.

Hitman’s Paris level will be free to download for a limited time

Io Interactive has a pretty good deal for new Hitman players: The studio is giving away the game’s Paris destination for free starting Dec. 15, giving anyone on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One a chance to play a decent sized chunk of the game.

The studio is calling the release the Hitman Holiday Pack. It will include the game’s first story mission, “Showstoppers,” as well as 18 Escalation Contracts for Paris, the “Holiday Hoarders” mission and the Paris Challenge Packs. The Hitman Holiday Pack also includes the ICA Facility location training area, which Io Interactive released for free earlier this year.

Indie games could suffer without Net Neutrality, devs say

The Federal Communications Commission voted Thursday, Dec. 14, to undo government regulations that ensured the internet remained an open utility for all. With Net Neutrality repealed, internet service providers will have the ability to block and throttle traffic and charge for online “fast lanes” — a move that could have devastating impacts for the independent game industry.

“An internet where massive corporations have even more control over what you can and cannot see, hear and say opens up a whole new world of problems for developers and indie games in general,” Scott Benson, co-founder of Infinite Fall (Night in the Woods), told Polygon following the vote.

Super Mario Odyssey’s attention to detail goes much deeper than you think

Super Mario Odyssey is absolutely filled with delightful surprises and an attention to detail that goes far above and beyond what’s expected from a game in this series.

The above video from JalopesTL explains how the game’s sound effects and incidental music actually changes to harmonize with whatever song is playing in the background. The melody that plays when Mario zips along an electrical line actually changes depending on the other music that’s playing at the same time, and the game even adjusts the music’s tempo to make sure everything matches up so the music sounds as good as the game looks.

A genius roguelike and classic RPG stand out in another packed week on Nintendo Switch eShop

Nintendo Switch eShop continues to drop a bounty of new games for owners of the console this month, with more than 20 titles arriving between today, Dec. 14, and Dec. 19. And that crop isn’t just filler; the eShop just got a mix of exciting, even monumental games this week.

We’ll start with the “monumental” one: Romancing SaGa 2, a sci-fi role-playing game from Square Enix that first launched on Super Famicom just over 24 years ago. The game didn’t make it to the West, however, until an iOS and Android port in 2016 — but on De. 15, local fans of the SaGa franchise will be able to play it on a console for the first time. Role-playing game lovers will also appreciate a new, classic-style, turn-based RPG to check out on the go.

Destiny 2’s holiday event adds snowballs, Mayhem and new gear

Bungie is bringing back The Dawning, the developer’s winter holiday-themed event, for Destiny 2 next week on Dec. 19. The limited-time event will add new gear, new activities and the spirit of giving to the game.

Destiny 2 players will be treated to redecorated social spaces with new activities during The Dawning. Guardians will be able to engage in snowball fights in the Farm and the Tower, and play a little Destiny-style hockey, thanks to an oversized puck and rink. Snowball fights will carry over to Strikes, too: Bungie said that players will be able to “blast an enemy with a snowball to stun them and deal big damage.”
