Capy Games’ next game, Cartoon Network’s OK K.O.!, launches Jan. 23

Capybara Games, the studio known for Super Time Force, Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes and the indefinitely delayed Below, is back with its first new project in nearly four years. OK K.O.! Let’s Play Heroes, a beat-’em-up developed in collaboration with Cartoon Network Games based on the TV series, will launch this January.

Let’s Play Heroes will launch on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One on Jan. 23. The game is set in the world of OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes, starring superhero-in-training K.O. and his fellow fighters as they roam around a strip mall. The series’ mix of action and slacker comedy makes it a unique, fitting series in the Cartoon Network lineup. (It helps that creator Ian Jones-Quartey made a name for himself with Steven Universe, a cartoon that manages a similar balance.)

Switch becomes fastest-selling console in US history, according to Nintendo

Nintendo has announced that its portable/console hybrid is now the fastest-selling console in U.S. history, according to its own internal sales estimates. The Nintendo Switch is even beating the sales of the original Wii in the United States.

“The home console that players can take wherever they go launched March 3, 2017, and in 10 months has sold more than 4.8 million units in the United States, according to Nintendo’s internal sales figures,” Nintendo stated. “That’s the highest total for the first 10 months of any home video game system in U.S. history, surpassing Nintendo’s own Wii system, which was the previous record holder with more than four million units sold during the same timeframe.”

Would you rent a cloud-based gaming PC rather than buy your own?

People familiar with the video game industry have been hearing about cloud gaming for so long that they may already be tired of the concept, even though it hasn’t yet hit the mainstream.

A number of high-profile disappointments, most notably the flameout of OnLive, have left gamers feeling that the idea might be an ahead-of-its-time fad, like virtual reality in the early 1990s. Plus there’s the additional hurdle of fidelity: Although our lives are becoming increasingly dependent on the cloud, it’s hard to convince gamers that any game-streaming platform can deliver an experience that’s as responsive as playing on a local machine.

Spain cuts €2M in indie game funding

Independent developers in Spain are today counting the cost of a ministerial decision to block €2 million (about $2.4 million) in European Union funding, designed to invigorate the local gaming scene.

According to a report in El Español, Spain's minister of Energy, Tourism and Digital Agenda, Álvaro Nadal, canceled the planned grant, which was planned to be sent to 20 different developers. Each company would have received between €50,000 and €150,000. Some of the money was specifically aimed at development teams of five persons or fewer which are working on their first game. It's not clear why the decision was taken.

While Capcom didn’t provide any more clarity on the release window, this year’s autumnal equinox occurs on Sept. 22, which could mean an eight-month gap between the console versions and the PC version of Monster Hunter: World.

Scythe will get a legacy-style expansion this year

Jamey Stegmaier struck gold with Scythe, one of the best new strategy board games in recent memory. This year he’s trying something different with a legacy-style expansion called Scythe: The Rise of Fenris.

Scythe is an alternate history game where giant mechs stomp across rural European battlefields. It blends worker-placement games like Agricola with area-control games like Risk or Axis & Allies. The fiction is based on Polish artist Jakub Różalski’s 1920+ setting, which has also been turned into a video game project called Iron Harvest.
