Here’s how 2005’s Star Wars: Battlefront 2 was patched this week

Star Wars: Battlefront 2 is more than 12 years old, but it has received two patches in the past four months, leaving fans of the old Pandemic Studios-developed shooter wondering who exactly is behind these updates. It turns out that although Disney isn’t making console or PC games anymore, it’s still working with partners to maintain older titles.

LucasArts originally published Star Wars: Battlefront 2, and Disney took control of the game when it acquired LucasArts’ parent company, Lucasfilm, in 2012. (Note that 2005’s Star Wars: Battlefront 2 is unrelated to the similarly titled Electronic Arts-published game Star Wars Battlefront 2, which was released in November 2017.)

Pokémon Go’s EX Raids are still a mess, even after promised fixes

Pokémon Go’s EX Raids are still a mess, even after promised fixes

A new set of Raid invites went out to Pokémon Go players this week, allowing them to participate in the game’s most exclusive battles. But despite promises from Niantic to adjust the confusing, oft-criticized system, players still find themselves locked out — and they don’t know why.

Officially known as EX Raid battles, these time-sensitive battles are the only way to capture especially rare Pokémon. To participate in the co-op multiplayer feature, players must meet a specific eligibility criterion: Only those who have won regular Raid battles can receive the required Premium Raid pass. They can also increase the likelihood that they’ll be invited into if they’re high-leveled, or if they’ve fought in a large number of Raids.

Cree Nation leader unhappy with Civilization 6 portrayal

Earlier this week, 2K Games introduced a new historical leader into its world conquest game Civilization 6. Cree leader Poundmaker (Pîhtokahanapiwiyin) joins the likes of Theodore Roosevelt, Queen Victoria and Genghis Khan as characters whose actions players control as they seek global domination.

But today’s headman of the Cree — a First Nations people who mainly live across Canada — says the portrayal is insensitive to their values.

Twice a year, Wizards of the Coast creates two new worlds for Magic: The Gathering, the original collectible card game, and releases them as four new sets of cards. The next set, called Rivals of Ixalan, arrives on Jan. 19.

Polygon had an exclusive sneak peek at the first of those cards just last month, including the latest iteration of Planeswalkers Vraska and Angrath. Today we have new cards to share from the set, along with the original art used to produce them.

Paladins is getting a battle royale mode called Battlegrounds

Hi-Rez Studios announced Paladins: Battlegrounds today, a new battle royale-style game mode for its free-to-play, fantasy hero-based shooter. Just like Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds, 100 players will drop onto a “massive map” to “explore, loot, and survive” in a fight to be the last Champion — or team of Champions — standing.

The developer calls Paladins: Battlegrounds “the first-ever hero shooter battle royale.”

Help Kylo Ren go undercover to learn about teamwork, and himself, in Battlefront 2 mod

Saturday Night Live put guest host Adam Driver to work making fun of both Undercover Boss and his Star Wars character Kylo Ren back in 2016, and now Matt, the radar technician, is a playable character in Star Wars Battlefront 2.

You can watch the original sketch in the video above, and then check out the mod in action in the video below. It’s a fun mod for the game, even if you can only play as Matt in the arcade and competitive modes of the PC version of Battlefront 2. You can grab the mod and learn what it can and can’t do from NexusMods.

Nintendo Switch eShop very quietly rings in 2018

It’s a new year — and the beginning of our first full 12-month period with Nintendo Switch. Nintendo is kicking off 2018 with a very tiny set of new releases on eShop, however; the list is even smaller than last week’s.

Perhaps this isn’t the New Year’s present you were expecting, but let’s not assume the foursome that arrives on Switch this week is indicative of what the console will get going forward. This is traditionally a slow period for new releases across the board, after all; expect things to pick back up as 2018 rolls on.

Crowdfunding on Fig investment platform down in 2017

Fig, the equity investment platform for games, was down more than 28 percent in 2017. The platform raised only $5.6 million, after raising more than $7.8 million in 2016.

Fig blends equity investment with traditional rewards-based crowdfunding. That means anyone can choose to invest in any of the games on the platform regardless of their net worth. Or, they can instead choose to pledge a fixed amount and receive games and other incentives for their money.
