Agents of Mayhem finds new life as a board game on Kickstarter

Despite high expectations for Volition’s follow-up to Saints Row, last year’s Agents of Mayhem landed with a thud. The game misfired with critics and appeared to sell poorly, reportedly leading to layoffs at the developer. But the property looks like it’s found a different audience in the form of a board game.

Tabletop game maker Academy Games launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign for Agents of Mayhem: Pride of Babylon last week. Academy Games quickly found success; backers have already contributed more than $120,000 to the project, more than four times its original funding goal.

One of esports’ top female players breaks new ground at StarCraft 2 tournament

Sasha “Scarlett” Hostyn, one of the most successful women in professional esports, just won her latest tournament. Taking the top prize in the Intel Extreme Masters 2018 tournament, an Olympics-sponsored StarCraft 2 competition that just wrapped in Korea, Scarlett also took home $50,000 — and the title of StarCraft 2’s first female winner of a major, global tournament.

Scarlett is already renowned in the StarCraft 2 community for her numerous wins over the years. With few women in the game’s massively popular competitive scene, Scarlett has garnered widespread acclaim for her accomplishments. She’s also amassed a hefty pile of prize money over the last seven years. Guinness World Records certified the Canadian pro as competitive gaming’s highest earning female player back in 2016, having won over $200,000 during her career.

Pokémon Go’s EX Raids are now even more confusing

Pokémon Go’s EX Raids are now even more confusing

A new wave of invitations to Pokémon Go’s next exclusive (or EX) Raid battle, which pits players against the legendary Pokémon Mewtwo, went out yesterday. But even those included on the guest list are left stumped as to why they received an invite — as it appears that Niantic has shaken up the already convoluted participation requirements entirely.

Players reported on Tuesday night that they received a heads-up about the game’s next EX Raid battle, which is set for this weekend. These players, however, said that the locations of these high-level fights don’t line up with the norm for EX Raids, which typically take place at gyms they’ve fought at a previous, recent time. Instead, the invites are sending them to go fight at gyms that may be far away, which could be inconvenient. Players may not have ever visited some of these gyms, which means they have to do some recon to find the EX Raid’s location.

Destiny 2’s Valentine’s Day event returns, more generous than ever

Bungie is bringing back Crimson Days, Destiny’s Valentine’s Day-themed seasonal event, next week. Destiny 2’s version of Crimson Days will see the return of two-on-two Clash mode in competitive multiplayer and the return of a beloved Crucible map, the Burning Shrine (now known as The Burnout). Naturally, there will also be plenty of fresh cosmetic loot to acquire.

Destiny 2’s Crimson Days event starts Feb. 13, and it looks like Bungie has learned to be much more generous with its loot in response to negative player feedback from last year’s The Dawning event. Bungie says it’s not capping the number of Crimson Engrams — the drops that hold event-specific loot — that players can earn during Crimson Days, and promises that players won’t receive duplicate items until they’ve earned all of the new event gear.

Wattam is the latest in a strong year for in-game puking

Veteran designer Keita Takahashi — of Katamari Damacy and Noby Noby Boy fame — has been teasing his next project, Wattam, for several years now. With a promise that the wacky friendship-making game will launch sometime this year, Takahashi’s adorable social media promos of late are looking a bit chunkier.

Unfortunately for those of you of weak constitutions, I mean “chunkier” in two very different ways. Wattam’s signature weirdness, according to the creator’s latest tweets, challenges players to maneuver around all kinds of physical and emotional reactions. And that includes vomiting.

Ex-STALKER developers reveal new battle royale game, Fear the Wolves

Vostok Games, the team of ex-STALKER developers behind Survarium, are bringing their post-apocalyptic style to the battle royale genre with a new first-person shooter called Fear the Wolves. Set in “radiation-ravaged Chernobyl,” Fear the Wolves will send 100 fighters into a battleground with the goal of being the last player standing.

Publisher Focus Home Interactive said Vostok’s take on the genre will have a few twists. In Fear the Wolves, players will have to worry about more than just other survivors; “deadly anomalies and dynamically-changing weather,” as well as a day-night cycle will require players to adapt to survive. Players can also find and equip protective gear that will let them survive in “dangerous off-limit zones.”

The Surge 2 is coming in 2019

The Surge, a Dark Souls-inspired science fiction brawler, is getting a sequel. Publisher Focus Home Interactive and developer Deck13 announced the renewal of their partnership, as well as a release window of 2019.

The team behind Lords of the Fallen, a dark fantasy action role-playing game, surprised many when it announced The Surge, in which players do battle against robotic and human enemies with futuristic exoskeletons. But the game proved very popular among fans, and even received critical praise. Polygon’s review called it “the biggest surprise of 2017.”

Fe’s mysteries unravel as you become one with nature

A streak of light flashes across the sky. Soon Fe, a black, fox-like creature with spikes lands on Earth — or what we assume is Earth. You have to play as this creature, but you’re not sure what to do or even what you can do. All you can do is move forward through the dark trees and toward the light.

But what happens next? In the next 10 minutes, a lot.
