Many hardcore first-person shooter fans and fans of the burgeoning battle royale genre have jumped on the Escape From Tarkov bandwagon. The milsim-style survival shooter, currently in closed beta, is the perfect antidote for when you need a break from PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. However, the game is notoriously laggy.

Recently, one YouTuber performed a battery of network tests on the game only to find that the amount of lag in the game was literally off the charts he’d been using to track similar games for the last few years.

Nightdive Studios’ remake of System Shock has been put on hiatus, according to a company statement obtained by Polygon and due to be sent to Kickstarter backers today. The game had been funded by a $1.35 million Kickstarter campaign that attracted 21,625 backers.

In the statement from Nightdive, CEO Stephen Kick wrote, “I have put the team on a hiatus while we reassess our path so that we can return to our vision. We are taking a break, but not ending the project. System Shock is going to be completed and all of our promises fulfilled.”

I have a personal affinity for the Bohemian region of Europe, being a quarter Bohemian on my mother’s side. But, like many third and fourth-generation Americans, that’s little more than a footnote in my history. My parents taught me next to nothing about my heritage, other than a few mispronounced curses that stuck with them from their youth. Hence my interest in Kingdom Come: Deliverance back when it showed up on Kickstarter in 2014. Here was a game, insisted the developers at Warhorse Studios, that would help me to get closer to my heritage, a “realistic RPG that will take you to Medieval Europe in a time of great upheaval and strife.”

Unfortunately, after a long weekend with the game, I’m not sure I’ve absorbed much more than would be gained by a trip to the local Renaissance faire or a rerun of an Errol Flynn movie.

Paradox Interactive released a video detailing the next expansion to Stellaris, its space-based grand strategy game. Called Stellaris: Apocalypse, the expansion will arrive on Feb. 22 alongside the game’s much anticipated 2.0 patch, which will go out free to all owners.

Apocalypse is a military-themed batch of content that includes new units and rules that are shuffled into the existing game. It finally deals with some of the issues I had with the game’s combat system and mid-game pacing when I reviewed it back in 2016. One of the most exciting changes is the addition of a computer-controlled faction called the marauders. Game designer Daniel Moregård likens them to “space moguls, a squabbling and warlike society with powerful fleets.” So, less like the Klingons and more like an irascible Elon Musk.

There are a million ways to enjoy classic arcade video games from the 1980s and 1990s these days, but there’s still something special about playing them on an actual arcade cabinet. That’s what toy manufacturer Tastemakers is hoping to capitalize on with Arcade1Up, a new line of modern arcade machines for the home.

Five different Arcade1Up machines are set to be released this fall, each of which includes a set of four beloved games from the arcade era. For instance, the Centipede cabinet comes with Breakout, Millipede and Missile Command as well; the Asteroids Deluxe machine also comes with the original Asteroids, along with Major Havoc and Tempest. One of the other three cabinets will feature a non-Atari game: Capcom’s Street Fighter 2.

The upcoming Yume Nikki: Dream Diary reimagines the cult-favorite, terrifying RPG Maker game, according to publisher Playism. But for those who haven’t played the PC original — which is free to play on Steam — a sneak peek at the updated version’s opening should give you a sense of what to expect ... and it’s very creepy.

Out Feb. 23, Dream Diary stars a teenage hikkikomori, a Japanese word for young people who prefer the safety of their own rooms to the unknowns of the outside world. In dreams, however, she adventures to a variety of places — including, at the game’s beginning, the streets of Japan. Based on this teaser, it sure looks like there’s nothing to be afraid of. She’s just on a pleasant jog through town, it seems.

Deadly Premonition and D4 creator Hidetaka “Swery” Suehiro is working on a new game with Arc System Works called The Missing. Swery revealed the new project today, but didn’t offer much detail about the game.

Swery said that The Missing will be the first game developed “in house” at his new company White Owls. (The game director’s other project, The Good Life, is being developed at Grounding Inc.)

Here’s how Destiny 2’s exotics are changing next month

Destiny 2 developer Bungie’s next set of balance changes will include some major updates to many of the game’s exotic weapons and armor pieces, the studio announced today.

The patch containing the updates in question, version 1.1.4, is scheduled to be released March 27. Bungie described the changes as a “tuning pass” that is “focused on adding and/or increasing player Power spikes.” The developers are focusing on unpopular gear — likely in an effort to boost its usage rates — but they’re considering tweaks to all exotic items. Bungie’s primary goals are to “lean into an item’s established gameplay and push it harder,” and to “avoid catch-all improvements that dilute item identity.”
