Starbreeze confirms Switch is getting an older version of Payday 2

The Payday 2 community on Reddit is in an uproar over confusion about which version of the game is coming to the Nintendo Switch later this month. The game’s publisher has just confirmed to Polygon that at least some of their fears are founded.

“Somebody who got the game early streamed it and the footage has a lot of information,” the original post stated. “The end of heists screens lack the speed up feature which means it’s below version 124. But here’s the strange thing ... at 1h 13m 16s, he steps outside and the billboards use the NEW texture which was added in version 131 ... so the graphics have been updated but the game itself has not. That’s odd. But at 1h 16m 44s he’s blinded by a flashbang and there is no flashbang present. This means there’s no flashbang update, which was update 124. There is no possible way the game is above version 124.”

How I learned to love Kingdom Come: Deliverance

How I learned to love Kingdom Come: Deliverance

From its inception, Kingdom Come: Deliverance was billed as a game steeped in realism. From period-accurate food and weapon damage to characters drawn from history, Warhorse Studios did its homework. With the game’s release last week, we finally got to play in their (as promised) realistic version of 15th century Bohemia.

And it’s oddly baffling.

Sega’s Shining series returns to the West after more than a decade

Sega’s Shining role-playing game series is coming back to the West with the release of Shining Resonance Refrain, a remaster of the 2014 PlayStation 3 game, Shining Resonance. Sega will release Shining Resonance Refrain sometime this summer on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One.

The Shining series is perhaps best known outside of Japan for the Shining Force games, a series of tactical RPGs for Sega Genesis and Sega Saturn. The series moved on from its turn-based tactical roots with games like Shining Wisdom, Shining the Holy Ark and the Shining Soul games. In recent years, many of the Shining games have been released exclusively in Japan, with the exception of fighting game spinoff Blade Arcus from Shining: Battle Arena, which came to Steam in 2016.

You can now view, edit PlayStation Network profiles on the web

The PlayStation Network mobile app is pretty darn terrible, and it seems like Sony has finally owned up to that. The company just launched a browser version of its PlayStation Network features, allowing members to access, edit and view their profiles without having to log into their consoles.

My PlayStation is a sleek, easy-to-navigate site that grants full access to all the features you’d ever want to check on the go. I logged in and immediately could see my friends list and profiles, trophies collection and messages. There’s also a quick menu of who and who isn’t online — so if you’re not sure you want to turn on your PS4 just to find no one else is playing Monster Hunter: World right now, the website will give you the head’s up.

Sonic, Pac-Man cross over to each other’s mobile apps

Sonic the Hedgehog and Pac-Man are crossing over to each other’s mobile games for the next month. Until March 20, Sonic can be found in Bandai Namco’s Pac-Man game for iOS and Android, and Pac-Man and his spouse will be playable characters in the endless runner Sonic Dash.

The crossover celebrates the fifth anniversary of Sonic Dash’s launch. In Sonic Dash, Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man will be part of special character events that alternate for one week. If players chomp up enough of the special fruit, bells and keys with them, they can keep the characters.

How MLS is using FIFA 18 esports to reach the next generation of soccer fans

Every sports league is always trying to draw in younger fans, but Major League Soccer might be banking on them more than any other.

In the American and Canadian sports worlds, soccer is still on the outside looking in — people tend to think of the “big four” pro sports leagues (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL) before MLS. But soccer is becoming increasingly popular here, especially with young people. It turns out that there’s a ton of crossover between MLS fans and people who play video games, which the league is now capitalizing on by creating its own esports organization.

Sonic the Hedgehog will star in a feature film set to debut next year, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The movie is expected to hit theaters on Nov. 15, 2019.

Sega first announced that it was bringing its classic character to the big screen back in February 2016. Later that year, Deadpool director Tim Miller signed on as executive producer, bringing along newcomer Jeff Fowler to direct. Fowler’s best known previous work is Oscar-nominated short “Gopher Broke.”

Call of Duty: WWII co-directors exit studio after nearly a decade

Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey, co-founders of Call of Duty developer Sledgehammer Games, are leaving the studio behind. Schofield, Condrey and publisher Activision announced that the veteran designers, who directed last year’s Call of Duty game, will move into other roles at Activision instead.

“We thank Activision for the wonderful opportunity to create and lead Sledgehammer Games,” said Schofield in a statement. “Now, it’s time to try other things. Activision has offered me the opportunity to focus my energy on something I’m very passionate about, exploring new game ideas for the company. It’s something I just couldn’t pass up.”

Close Combat was nearly done when the developer changed game engines

Close Combat was nearly done when the developer changed game engines

Close Combat: The Bloody First was originally expected some time in 2014, but went missing in action and was presumed dead. That is until a few weeks ago when Matrix Games announced that the next installment of the classic World War II-themed tactical strategy game would release this year. So why the four-year delay? Lead developer Steve McClare said that it all boils down to the decision to move from the Unity game engine to publisher Slitherine’s own home-brewed platform called Archon.

The Close Combat series was first launched back in 1996 and it’s always had a purely top-down perspective. Players take the role of a small infantry unit commander and issue orders to their soldiers in the field. Morale plays a big part in every engagement, as do principles like command and control. If you push your men too far, too fast, they can lose contact with their leaders and sometimes even the will to fight.
