MLB Home Run Derby VR lets you launch dingers from your house

R.B.I. Baseball 18 isn’t the only video game that MLB Advanced Media is making this year. The company announced today that it is also developing MLB Home Run Derby VR, a smaller experience that the studio is planning to release on PlayStation VR and HTC Vive this spring.

The batting practice game has its origins in a product that MLBAM created last year, an experimental ballpark attraction that became so wildly successful that the company is expanding it in 2018 — both to additional stadiums and to the gaming audience. It’s a testament to the smart way that MLBAM uses all the parts of the buffalo when it comes to the software it develops. And it’s also a lot of fun.

Report: Toys R Us will close another 200 stores

Retail chain Toys R Us will reportedly close another 200 stores in addition to the 180 locations previously announced. The Wall Street Journal reports, citing sources familiar with the matter, that the nation’s largest toy seller has also “walked back from a promise” to provide severance for its employees.

The total number of store closings, including those announced in January, would be around 380. Layoffs could be in excess of 9,000. The Journal noted “a disappointing holiday sales season” as part of its report on the additional store closings.

Fortnite season 3 is now live

Fortnite developer Epic Games launched the game’s third season of content this morning. That followed a brief period of downtime as Epic scrambled to stabilize the new patch. Fortnite’s free update applies new content to the Save the World and Battle Royale game modes, including new avatars and collectibles as well as a few subtle tweaks to the game.

The announcement came via Twitter this morning around 6 a.m. ET that season 3 had launched. Less than 30 minutes later, the Fortnite Twitter account said that the servers would need to be taken offline.

Ivy and Zasalamel return for Soulcalibur 6

Isabella “Ivy” Valentine, the Soulcalibur series’ most notorious fighter, will return for Soulcalibur 6, Bandai Namco confirmed today. Ivy stars in one of two new gameplay trailers for the fighting game; the other confirms the return of Zasalamel.

With the exception of the first game in the Soul fighting game franchise, Ivy has appeared in every Soulcalibur game to date. In Soulcalibur 6, she’s going back to her original Soulcalibur look — understandable, given the sixth game’s setting — which means she’s showing a lot of skin, so ... heads-up if you’re planning on watching Ivy’s gameplay reveal at, say, work or church this morning.

Final Fantasy 15 on PC lets you play as Half-Life’s Gordon Freeman

Final Fantasy 15 Windows Edition will launch on March 6, and Square Enix announced that there are several bonuses available to buyers, depending on which storefront they purchase the game from. These bonuses are generally of the standard “extra costumes and power-up” — but for Steam users, one of those extra costumes happens to be based on Half-Life star Gordon Freeman.

The Half-Life pack will be available for free to anyone who buys Final Fantasy 15 off Steam before May 1, Square Enix said. Gordon Freeman’s iconic suit isn’t only available for Noctis to wear in the main campaign; players can also equip their customizable characters from the multiplayer expansion Comrades with the accompanying glasses and crowbar.

Fortnite’s next update will add ‘turbo building’ so you can go even faster

Fortnite, the hybrid action building game from Epic Games, will soon enter Season 3. Along with a new Battle Pass and tons of new cosmetic items, there’s at least one new feature coming down the pike. It’s called “turbo building.”

Epic announced turbo building in a blog post today. It’s secreted away in the menu settings, but once you turn it on you’ll be able to create structures more quickly. It reduces the need to enter the building menu as often, and allows you to use the primary fire button to continuously place the last piece that you selected. Epic said that players will now be able to “paint” those pieces in more quickly, which should be particularly handy when you’re trying to throw up a hasty defense or build a stairway to heaven.

Xbox chief calls for more inclusivity and an end to toxic gamers

In his keynote at the game industry’s DICE convention today, Xbox chief Phil Spencer called on game companies to embrace inclusivity, and to fix toxic biases that make women and minorities feel unwelcome — both working at game companies and interacting in gaming’s online spaces.

Spencer said that he has spent the last four years at Microsoft grappling with a mission to create a more inclusive environment. And he talked about mistakes made along the way, including an infamous Game Developers Conference party in 2016, when the company hired scantily clad women as dancers.

Nintendo eShop pre-orders can’t be canceled, and Europe is fed up

Nintendo is the only console maker whose digital storefront doesn’t allow customers to cancel pre-orders. With pre-release downloads of software becoming increasingly common, however, at least one major consumer rights body has had enough with Nintendo’s eShop policies — especially because, according to the European Union Consumer Rights Directive, the company is skirting the law.

The Norwegian Consumer Council decried Nintendo eShop’s no-cancellation policy in a formal letter sent directly to the company. PressFire, a local gaming site, reported that it obtained a copy of the letter, in which the Council asks Nintendo to either clarify how to cancel digital pre-orders — or instate a way to do so as soon as possible.
