Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order upgrade is free for disc owners, too

Current owners of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order can now get a free upgrade to the new Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5 versions of the game. And good news for anyone who owns a hard copy, but one of the disc-less models of the PS5 or Series X: You can get the upgrade too, according to an FAQ from EA.

The upgraded Jedi: Fallen Order includes the usual batch of visual improvements you’d expect with more powerful consoles: an improved frame rate, as well as a higher resolution experience for Xbox Series X, Series S, and PlayStation 5. (When the performance mode for the Series X and PS5 is turned on, the game will run at 1440p Resolution at 60 FPS.) There’s also improved post-processing resolution for Xbox Series X and PS5, but not for the Xbox Series S.

E3 2021 trailers: The best and biggest new games shown this week

E3 2021 means game trailers and video highlights by the dozen. By the score. By the gross. We’ll do our best to catalogue here all of the reveals and demonstrations coming from a week of presentations and keynotes.

We already got a slew of new looks at big games during the two-hour Summer Game Fest Kickoff Live on Thursday. That will be followed by major publishers Ubisoft, Square Enix, and Bethesda and Microsoft over the weekend. Nintendo’s highly anticipated E3 2021 Nintendo Direct on Tuesday caps the big week.

Doja Cat’s newest video says gaming is hot girl shit, too

In the new video for “Need to Know,” a single off the upcoming album, Planet Her, Doja Cat playfully grinds the air to dance in her undies, then plays her PlayStation 5 alongside her troupe of baddies. The small detail is yet another example of how the pop artist and TikTok viral sensation threads video games into her work.

The music video is a relatively standard concept: Doja and her girls have a night out on the town. There’s just a slight twist: They’re all aliens — Doja herself resembling Aayla Secura from Star Wars — and it takes place in a retro-futuristic Blade Runner-esque world. Instead of depicting them getting all glammed up and putting on makeup, we see the group lounging on the couch, and pregaming with video games. It’s sexy. It’s cheeky. And most of all, it’s oozing with Doja Cat’s usual playfulness as she dances on the sofa and smoothly grinds the air to dance alongside her girls.

Bethesda cancels Fallout 76’s battle royale mode

Nuclear Winter, Fallout 76’s battle royale mode, is saying goodbye. The mode will be permanently removed in a September update, according to an official post by Bethesda. The mode simply hasn’t proved popular enough to justify its inclusion, the company said, and Bethesda will be prioritizing the game’s Adventure Mode.

This is proving somewhat of a controversial decision for a segment of the Fallout 76 playerbase, as Nuclear Winter was the only supported PvP game mode. Survival, a version of the game focused on open-world PvP in the game’s main map of Appalachia was also sunset in March of 2019.

Netflix and CD Projekt Red partnering for Witcher convention in July

To conclude Netflix’s Geeked Week, the streaming service announced yet another event, but this time it’s all about The Witcher. The event will be called Witchercon and it will be hosted by CD Projekt Red, the developers of The Witcher video game series, and Netflix itself on July 9.

While the announcement didn’t include any specifics, we do know that Netflix has a few Witcher-related projects on the horizon. There’s season 2 of the main show, which Netflix debuted an extremely brief teaser for during Geeked Week, as well as an animated spin off movie, and a new live-action prequel show called The Witcher: Blood Origin. We don’t know for sure if Netflix will premiere anything from those shows at Witchercon, but it certainly seems like a good place to do it.

In addition to a new animated series set in the Resident Evil universe, Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, Netflix has a second, live-action series in the works. That series, which is still untitled, is now in production, Netflix revealed during Friday’s Geeked Week stream. More importantly, Netflix revealed the show’s cast, including the actor will be portraying Resident Evil villain Albert Wesker: It’s Lance Reddick.

Reddick may best known for his acting work in the John Wick movies and television series The Wire and in Fringe. Video game fans also know him as the voice of Commander Zavala in Destiny and Sylens in Horizon Zero Dawn.

A total of 780 GB of data stolen was stolen, Vice reported, including “proprietary EA frameworks and software development kits.” Hackers provided Vice with documents reportedly stolen in the hack, with information on PlayStation VR and other development tools.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order’s free PS5 and Xbox Series X upgrade now available

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X — and the free upgrade for owners of the game on the previous generation — is available beginning Friday morning.

The full game is $39.99 in both the PlayStation and Xbox marketplaces, although the upgrade is free for those who already have the game. Previously, a patch optimized Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order for the newest consoles, but that was mainly to unlock the base version and let it use the hardware’s improved power.
